Great to have you here John.  I love the Sea Tornados - the RAN one is on my to model list!

Regards,

Greg

It just looks so right doesn't it, what would it fly off, an updated Essex or the modernised Implacables transfered from the RN in WWII?

Hi guys,

It's been a loooooong time since I've done any illustrations. Here is my first attempt since January!  :o
Seeing that the A-10 has been such a successful aircraft and it will be in service for years to come, I thought a "stealthy" version might work? I opted for "oldschool" stealth from the F-117. Here is my work-in-progress... Still need to work out something for enclosing the gun...
Any comments or advice welcome.  ;)

Cheers
John

Welcome back, John!  Glad to see you at it again.

The "Silent Hog" is very neat!  I like some of the looks there.    What's the plan for the under-wing ordnance?

For a more purpose-built replacement, how about something like a scaled up Tacit Blue but with a Global Hawk type upper fuselage and A-10-style attack nose?  That may work.

Cheers,

Logan

You may also want to scale-up design elements of the AGM-137A which resembles a shrunken and flipped upside-down TACIT BLUE.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the comments.  ;)
It is nice to draw again, but still battling to get into it... My passion for illustrating took a bit of a dive...  :-\

Regarding underwing stores, it never crossed my mind, because you can take the underwing stores away, and it's still an A-10, but take the GAU-8A out of the equation, and it is just an ugly bomber  ;D. Line to thought, that the Nighthog be a specialist version, going in first to take out key AAA targets only. This would give standard A-10's the ability to strike with impunity. There are other aircraft that can carry out tasks of delivering bombs and missiles.

Cheers

What if you replaced that ammunition wasting Gatling Gun design with something more economical and just as effective like a 35mm Oerlikon, 40mm Bofors, or a Bushmaster Chain Gun?  The GAU-8 is spectacular for sure but the system is designed with cycling unexpended/unfired ammuntion back into the drum as it cycles through a firing sequence.  I never thought of this as a good idea since unfired ammunition and fired ammunition cases were returned to the magazine.   Now that technology has given us the small caliber guided bullets it would be possible to add laser guidance into the mix for even greater accuracy and with that the number of rounds expended per target could be reduced to just what is necessary to service [destroy] that target.

Hi Jeffry,

I hear you, but that big old gatling gun is awesome  :-*! The Mirages and Cheetahs the SAAF used to operate, also retained shell casings and links with their DEFA cannons. This actually assists with maintaining the CG of the aircraft, so the concept is useful. Still chewing on an idea of folding or sliding doors to open and close the muzzle of the gun...

My only suggestion is to change the weapon out.  The CG issues would remain so empty casings would be retained.  A single barrel cannon of a slightly larger caliber should be no problem in getting it to fit that same space on the A-10.  Just finding a suitable barrel to plop in to suggest that is the challenge for me in 1:48th scale.  Figured on finding something with a nifty muzzle brake that would look interesting but finding something that will fit is the challenge.  :)

Pretty much what I was thinking would look good parked up front.
