Title: Random space & Scifi ideas and inspiration
Post by: GTX_Admin on February 26, 2012, 04:48:11 PM
Hi folks,

A thread for your random space and Scifi themed ideas and inspiration that don't really fit anywhere else.

To start with, here is a MiG Space fighter concept I found on the web.

Nice find man!

Here's a space freighter design I came up with awhile back.  We had to re-design the cast of "Firefly" for a concept art class back in college so I had re-do the ship as well  8)  I envisioned it as 700' long  container ship surplus from the Colonial Navy.

I had some ideas alnog the same lines myself about a logical spacefighter, but not so well developed.

I remember his pictures from when I was a teenager. Whenever a space ship was being blown up there was always a body been flung into space...

Heh - nice one! You could see a TV production with a limited budget actually cobbling that Space Cobra together out of scrapyard bits: similar things have been done for real.....

Exhibit A - The infamous "Rapier" from Wing Commander:

(The "Broadswords" in the same movie were cobbled together from Canberras)

Exhibit B - The equally infamous "Medical Shuttle" from Firefly:

It's not actually a "real" Hind, it's a 2/3 scale fibreglass model originally build to sit in the background of some war movie. The engine pods were made from dustbins, and wern't even straight from one side to the other. Unbelievably, a group of die-hard fans have bought this thing to restore: now I love Firefly, but to me this is just about the worst example of sheer lack of budget and time showing thuogh badly on screen......

the Lightning looks good no matter how you cut it up :)

Never seen a pic of the Broadsword -- I did google it once with no joy, only knew about the movie from a thumbnail pic in an old Flypast mag :icon_nif:

Any good pics of these spacefighters online ?

Knew this reminded me of something:

From the old Rogue Trooper strip in 2000AD.

I also hold that this design was the inspiration for the Republic Gunship in Star Wars: they took the basic idea, but then made it Hind-based instead of Cobra-based.

Do I need to provide proof of my sincerity every time I post an image on this site? This is kind of boring!

Not entirely sure what you mean by that, but if you thought I was criticising you in some way, then rest assured I wasn't. Your idea just reminded me of another, different idea: that's all. :D

No, you don't. And nobody said you had to. Weaver simply stated your design reminded him of a design he'd seen somewhere else. By saying that he didn't accuse you of stealing, copying or questioned your sincerity in any other way.

Nothing That's New

Same seven notes and some slag poet's quotes
Stick them together with glue
You can mix a fine cocktail from memories
And pretend what you're drinking is new
But there's nothing that's new under heaven
(Chorus)
There's nothing that hasn't been done
Pour me another double cliche
You can't write a song that's never been sung
Everyone's stealing from someone
Burglars get burgled as well
There's nothing that's new under heaven
There's nothing unique over hell
There's nothing that's new under heaven
(Repeat chorus)
You can't write a song that's never been sung
You can't write a song that's never been sung

Chumbawamba

Chumbawamba NOTHING THAT'S NEW (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4JObZ7JIV_E#)

Now I have to say that while I love both Moorcock and Mathews, that isn't my favorite picture of the Ice Schooner. My favorite is this one, although I might be slightly biased by the fact that my mother copied it as an exercise when she started painting, and my auntie then copied it asa painted china plate, which now hangs on our wall.

I always liked these anti-grav flyers from the Rogue Trooper strip in 2000AD as per my previous post. Had another look today, and noticed that there were a lot more scans from the relevant episodes on the web, so I've put together this montage. Hopefully I'll build one of these at some point.

(http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d165/hws5mp/The%20Whiffery/roguetrooperflyermontage.jpg) (http://s35.photobucket.com/user/hws5mp/media/The%20Whiffery/roguetrooperflyermontage.jpg.html)

(Note: 2000AD probably own the copyright on all these images and I'm using them for comment, not personal gain).

Some Corsairish police vehicle from a Japanese TV show known in France as San Ku Kaï (1979). ;D
It also appeared in a very bad clone of the Star Wars movie made in 1978, don't remember the name...

A military robot from Risk: Legacy.

I like this idea of a mecha designed to the theme of an army that has a large conscript or volunteer pool, but the pilot and gunners are way too exposed.

There would have to be a hole in the floor of the gunners stations to let the barf out after swinging around in there for a while!

The gunners on each side don't seem to have floors.  Damn, even with a flood of available conscripts, you'd think training costs would make them take better care of their people assets.

What were they trying to do? Nuke the Man in the Moon?  :o

Well, he just kept staring at them... ;D

Actually, I think it might be tied to Project A119.

I'd really love to see some one illustrate the launch as described in Clarke's novelization.  I keep thinking of a booster stage that resembles a massively scaled-up Hawker P.1134 and carries the Orion to launch altitude/velocity.

Have you seen this:

No, I hadn't seen it.  It looks somewhat plausible,  I was going with the concept I described because it also comes close to a reusable two-stage-to-orbit concept Clarke used in his earliest novel, Prelude to Space.

Both of these use the idea of recovering the expensive bits of a spent first stage booster (engines & electronics) but letting the empty tankage crash/burn up. Both also avoid the recoverable bits coming down in the ocean, which significantly increases the time and cost of refurbishing them.

I had a similar idea years ago, but mine had the engine section coming down on a deployable para-glider and landing on air-bags on any bit of dry land, so kind or a combination of the two. I'm not sure it's glide ratio would have been good enough though, unless there was an island (natural or artificial) under the flight path.

If you do a Google image search for the triple nuke-the-Moon rocket illustration, the artist is listed as a "Chesley Bonestell"... even though it doesn't look at all like his style and it clearly signed "Ward '57'
This artwork is from Eagle Annual #8.

There were serious thoughts of using a nuke on the moon to blow chucks of regolith back to Earth. Seriously. Carl Sagan worked on the math behind it, and it was certainly within the technological capability of the US to do in the near future (from a late 1950s perspective).
Imagine that mission going wrong?
"Uh, Washington? We've lost control of our Moon Missile, and it's going to hit the Earth sometime in the next three months, give or take 8 weeks. And the bomb is armed..."
At least if it had hit the moon, it would have been a little harder for idiots to deny it happened. "Yes Johnny, your grandfather was looking at the moon back in 1963, with his 12 inch telescope. That's why he has that hole burned through his skull."

The article was quite well done.  I did leave a comment though about V-S Day which is a pretty good read and mentioned another novel using Sanger's project, Hell's Gate which has it's implausible elements but, in the right hands, would make a great retro-technothriller action movie along the lines of the first "Indiana Jones" movie.

I found the tweet which describes the shuttle's safe abort envelope. Not a lot of "feeling good zones". This one preceded the Block II Shuttle tweet.

This graph is a good illustrator for just how unforgiving the Space Shuttle's safe abort envelope was, and I use safe in highly relative terms. The black zones all indicate areas of the ascent in which loss of crew and vehicle are extremely likely.

Does anyone know the backstory behind MAiM's 3D-printed Front 46 series? As far as I can tell, it is a variation on extended-WW2 scenarios. However, instead of the Third Reich, it is Schwabenland against the Soviets, Brits, US, etc. Uniforms look much like RW but, you know, with walkers, energy weapons, gatling railguns, exo-skeleton suits, etc, added in.

The kit that seems to get most of the attention is #35331 - the Gefechtsroboter Hammerschlag (or 'Hammer-blow' Combat-robot) with driver. This has a strong Ma.K. feel about it. That influence is even stronger in the cheekily name Unke Taktischer Raketenwerfer ('Toad' Tactical Rocket-launcher).

Others - like the T.S.K. Thor (Schwerer Kampfläufer or Heavy Combat-runner) combine Ma.K. with giant Mecha/Gundam influences. Or, like the S.H.E. Mücke (Spionage Hybrid Einheit or 'Mosquito' Hybrid Spu Unit), are more Star Wars-y. Anyway, colour me intrigued. Anyone know more?

The map is upside-down. The big wet empty space at the bottom should be to the North - Mars got whacked in what is now its arctic regions by a very large asteroid early on.

The Expanse, from my point of view, one great Sci Fi show.

One of the terrific side story scenes is the Slingshot racer Y Q and its pilot Maneo.

Using Gravity wells to slingshot around the solar system. No Epstein drives here, just positioning thrusters.
The design gives the home built racer look. Love it

Really do plan to give something like this a go, graffiti and all.

Oh and probably the second best cover of Highway Star by Deep Purple ever (after the Chickenfoot versions) , lyrics in Belter Creole language.

Nope, that's Elysium Mons. If you look at the correct map of Mars, you'll note that Valles Marineris curves to the left, pointing at Mount Olympus. In the wet, upside down map of Mars, Valles Marineris curves down and to the right. You can also see the three shield volcanos in Tharsis (the Tharsis Montes (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tharsis_Montes))

That looks like a 40m Orion (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Orion_(nuclear_propulsion)) vs a Daedalus (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Daedalus). The Daedalus was designed to reach 0.12c - somewhat faster than the best Orion design. OTOH, Daedalus was unmanned and used unproven fusion pellet fusion, vs pellet fission in Orion. The fission pellets (or nukes that size) were (probably) not tested, but the designs imply that they were well characterized in the 1950s-60s.
