Title: IT-130, or 'what the hell was I thinking?'
Post by: Story on March 24, 2020, 03:01:37 AM
Tamiya T-62 hull, with the turret race and fenders stripped off of it.

Oh yeah.... was going to build an IT-130, but got stuck on where to source an appropriate barrel.
Machts Nichts anyways. Read all about 'em.

What to do? I could have slapped a D-30 on it (like the Eritreans did to some of their T55s), but I gave that kit to a buddy...

In 1:35th scale there are few choices with two 12.8cm PaK44 (close enough) or 130mm gun tube as the only options I am aware of.  Aber makes a very pricey metal 130mm gun tube for the IS-7 with the signature "Pepper Pot" muzzle brake (two versions: one with short muzzle brake and one with long muzzle brake).  Lion Roar/Great Wall Hobbies makes a pair of 12.8 cm gun tubes for the PaK44 (Krupp and Rheinmetal), both of which feature the Pepper Pot style muzzle brake.  The Aber gun tube for the IS-7 also includes three 7.62mm MG gun barrels and a pair of 14.4mm MG gun barrels with huge flash suppressor cones.

There's also the BTR-T concept

Maybe a BMP derivative? ESCI/ERTL donor kit.

Been doing a bit of re-reading on Soviet armor design culture. Seems to be a penchant for lost and abandoned ideas (just like modeling).

Or something akin to the IT-1:

For the BTR-T, you could always do what the Ukrainians did and reverse the tank, putting the engine up front and allowing a more comfortable egress for the soldiers inside.

Any Idea, where the engine is mounted on the IDF Achzarit?

"The Achzarit is based on the Soviet-built T-54/T-55 tank, beginning with those captured from Arab armies during the Arab–Israeli wars. To make space for a troop compartment, the eight-and-a-half tonnes turret, the original superstructure of the chassis and the transversely mounted engine were removed. Non-Explosive Reactive Armour was installed over the original hull . The first model of the Achzarit entered in service in 1988. "

I'd looked at the IT-1, considered it weird but too mundane (if that makes sense). Also, pancaking a flatter turret seemed like more work than it'd be worth. I'm trying to.... make this an easy finish.  ;D

PS - just saw your post on the TRUMPETER IT-1 over in the Soviet/Russian Armor inspiration thread. For the general good,

Well, here are some videos of the IT-1 in action:

Howsa 'bout something like this?  Object [insert number here] Reconnaissance Vehicle for T-62 Regiments (circa 1970), or more fitting a Command/Communication vehicle to replace one of the trucks or ACVs in the Signal Platoon (p. 4-22 here https://fas.org/irp/doddir/army/fm100-2-3.pdf ) kinda like the BMP-1K (before it was developed).

Driver (l) and vehicle commander (r) in the front hull, radio operator (2nd r) and loader (2nd l) in the back hull seats. Gunner in the turret.

Rear mounted, with a passageway for troops to exit past the engine and from the rear (theoretically sheltered from incoming fire).

That might work - the turret looks a little shallow for that gun, but that may just be a Russian thing. It needs more antennas, and maybe better optics that the crappy Russian periscopes provided.

Hmmm I like this sort of thing. What would /could Soviets or others do with an ex gun tank Chassis.
Crazy Bofors mount like the Bosnians ?
here is one I prepared earlier
(http://www.modelblokez.org.au/bthpix/whatif/AFV/serbt-55_1.jpg)

But then thought was Armoured, short range SAM vehicle in an Anti Helo role.
Similar to the MTLB or Gaskin, but with perhaps more missiles.

Bit of overkill using a tank but with full armoured Launch boxes, the survivability would be highter

Makes perfect sense ;)

That's neat? More pics? Take any WIP?

Also, think I found the casement I was planning to use.

SU-122-54, by way of comparison. Considering that the SU-130-62 (or IT-130) was a fantasy construct, there are no 'wrong' answers.

Damn, and here I thought I was being original earmarking a T-62 kit and 130mm barrel for a SU-130-62 model.  ;D Had the exact same thing planned. Well, still have.
Will be following your efforts closely.  8)

Thanks, but after searching my soul and my parts box I realized I couldn't do the original concept justice so I pursued the T-62 Signals Command Vehicle concept instead; TAMIYA T-62 upper and lower hull, ESCI turret hatches, DML BMP-1 upper hull and turret, 23mm barrel from a DML ZSU-23-4. DML T-80 snorkle standing-in for a 4m antenna container.

THAT SAID, I would highly encourage you (and anyone else) to pursue a T-62-130/IT-130 concept build.

If I was inclined to acquire additional kits and stuff, I'd get the MINI-ART T-54-122 late model
https://miniart-models.com/products/37042-su-122-54-late-type/ (https://miniart-models.com/products/37042-su-122-54-late-type/)

and a Panda Hobbies 130mm barrel
https://www.scalemates.com/kits/rb-model-35b133-130mm-m-65-l-60-barrel-object-279-tank-panda-hobby--601405 (https://www.scalemates.com/kits/rb-model-35b133-130mm-m-65-l-60-barrel-object-279-tank-panda-hobby--601405)
(Some guy in Poland has them in stock https://www.ebay.com/itm/1-35-RB-MODEL-35B133-METAL-BARREL-130mm-M-65-L-60-for-OBJECT-279-TANK-for-PANDA-/131236521484 (https://www.ebay.com/itm/1-35-RB-MODEL-35B133-METAL-BARREL-130mm-M-65-L-60-for-OBJECT-279-TANK-for-PANDA-/131236521484) )

mated to a TAMIYA T-62 hull.

Build the TAMIYA lower hull and splice the engine deck to the MINI-ART T-54-122 upper hull casement. Add 130mm main gun.
Paint to suit.

NOTE: I will trade this unbuilt T-62 kit for the MINI-ART unused T-54 parts, if someone decides to tackle this and wants to keep their costs down.

<...> so I pursued the T-62 Signals Command Vehicle concept instead <...>

Mock-up looks good.  Especially with the sides at an angle, branching out across the fenders.

Got the RB barrel in the stash already, by the way.  ;)

Really like what you are doing here.

Great find on the BTR Hybrid as well. Between some of this weird Middle East stuff and some of the concoctions to come out of the Balkans, nothing appears to be off the table.
