Title: Polygons Aerodrome
Post by: polygon on December 05, 2014, 08:23:19 PM
Here are some of my aviation, most of these are just aircraft that I've rearranged in ways I thought were interesting, no particular reasoning behind them.

Skywarrior VIP:

Skywarrior as a rotodyne:

Two Phantoms and some other parts:

Two Skywarriors merged as a maritime patrol craft:

Rearranged skywarior as an awacs:

Cargo seaplane - inspired by the convair tradewind:
(http://i1272.photobucket.com/albums/y390/polygon88/tw1_zps98fd051b.jpg) (http://s1272.photobucket.com/user/polygon88/media/tw1_zps98fd051b.jpg.html)

Some sort of seaplane from the remnants (had to recast a part that I ruined in my first attempt at the cargo seaplane)
(http://i1272.photobucket.com/albums/y390/polygon88/fb1_zpscada275a.jpg) (http://s1272.photobucket.com/user/polygon88/media/fb1_zpscada275a.jpg.html)

Modified phantoms:

Prowler VTOL - originally since I used the prowlers wings on the phantoms, I was just going to do a simple wing swap, but then I realized that if I flipped the wings it sort of looks like the dropship from starcraft 2:

Flight mode:

VTOL mode:

Outstanding!

1/700 or 1/350?

Both actually, the seaplanes, trader and kamov are 700 and the rest are 350.

Here my latest quick build, a 1/350 backwards wing B-25.
I bought a pack of ten a few years ago and through various moves and cleanups I only have this one left. I tried a rudimentary paint job with one of those silver markers, but it didn't turn out so well.

There are all fantastic! I have several boxes of Trumpeter 1/350 planes and only vague wiffing ideas. The A-3 Skywarrior variants are ll great and that B-25 reminds me of this book cover:

Reminds me of the 'Rutanised' B-17G you can see on the web. Nice job :)

That book cover is where I got the idea to put the vertical stabilizers on the ends of the wings and the pusher props from Sky Crawlers.

Anyway here are my latest builds.

2 1/700 f-15 concepts.
one is a combination of the silent eagle - conformal weapon bays (although you cant really see them) and canted tail fins - and the f-15 active - canards and thrust vectoring (the real active has 3d thrust vectoring, but I like the look of f-22 style 2d thrust vectoring.
And the other one is based on a tailless f-15.
(http://i1272.photobucket.com/albums/y390/polygon88/f-15_1_zpsf306ca1b.jpg) (http://s1272.photobucket.com/user/polygon88/media/f-15_1_zpsf306ca1b.jpg.html)
(http://i1272.photobucket.com/albums/y390/polygon88/f-15_2_zpsd733ef2a.jpg) (http://s1272.photobucket.com/user/polygon88/media/f-15_2_zpsd733ef2a.jpg.html)

1/700 f-4 with tomcat wings - added overwing ferry tanks because I think they look nice:
(http://i1272.photobucket.com/albums/y390/polygon88/phancat_zps2ab4c8b7.jpg) (http://s1272.photobucket.com/user/polygon88/media/phancat_zps2ab4c8b7.jpg.html)

1/700 Tilt-rotor starlifter:
(http://i1272.photobucket.com/albums/y390/polygon88/starsprey_zpsd297e7dc.jpg) (http://s1272.photobucket.com/user/polygon88/media/starsprey_zpsd297e7dc.jpg.html)

1/350 s-3 viking seaplane:
(http://i1272.photobucket.com/albums/y390/polygon88/sea-3_zps43f9fec8.jpg) (http://s1272.photobucket.com/user/polygon88/media/sea-3_zps43f9fec8.jpg.html)
Now that I look at the picture, those engines are crooked, I'll fix that later.

WOW - do you have a good eye for configuration changes or what :)
I am learning from these.
How you ever saw a seaplane lurking within the S-3 is brilliance :o

I still have another starlifter, which I will make as a Quad rotor.

My thought process is a little strange sometimes. Sometimes I'll get carried away with a theme (when I came up with the sea viking I was on a seaplane theme), sometimes a design idea will pop into my head out of nowhere and other times I'll see something in something. For example I turned my sea viking upside down and got this idea( probably needs some scaleoraming and wing smallening):

Su-25 based attack jet (based on the obscure Avenger II from Macross) with a full carpet bombing load of SDBs. I wish they made a 2 seater su-25 in 1/144 or 1/72, I really want to build a bigger one of these:

I kind of flubbed the nozzles because getting the right position would have required extensive rework of the rear fuselage.

And work has started on my Joint strike harrier idea from the VTOL GB:

Very, very neat. I like that back-swept Hornet. By the way, was that MiG at all inspired by Red Alert 2?

Cheers,

Logan

was that MiG at all inspired by Red Alert 2?

As a matter of fact it was, I was just going to do a straight Red alert version but then I placed the mig kit next to my f16xl and the idea just clicked.

1/144 scale?

Yep, its my new favourite scale

Stealth fighter - added some pods and calling it done.

Polygon,

I would like to know more about how you created your LO-FAT Pods.  They are quite interesting.

Yourj Hornado VG-VTOL Harrier/Tornado combination is a very nice concept.  I hope we will see more WIP images of this as you continue the project.

So what is the name of that Sukhoi-F-16XL going to be?  :)

Do you mean how I got the idea or how did I build them?

I don't usually take that many wip pics, but if anyone's interested I could take some more during my next projects. As for the Harnado, its almost finished and there are no wip pics :(.

I've got it narrowed down to a few names, but you'll have to wait till its finished before I settle on one, should be in a few days.

Harnado Mk.II finished:
(http://i1272.photobucket.com/albums/y390/polygon88/F98D0DAF-8768-4B4F-BF7B-E7BA5EB6CA15_zpsnucghocp.jpg) (http://s1272.photobucket.com/user/polygon88/media/F98D0DAF-8768-4B4F-BF7B-E7BA5EB6CA15_zpsnucghocp.jpg.html)
(http://i1272.photobucket.com/albums/y390/polygon88/6A479BE2-41A0-46EB-A8C5-1636A3A7CA7D_zps6qa5tkqd.jpg) (http://s1272.photobucket.com/user/polygon88/media/6A479BE2-41A0-46EB-A8C5-1636A3A7CA7D_zps6qa5tkqd.jpg.html)

Compared to the Mk.I:
(http://i1272.photobucket.com/albums/y390/polygon88/3BF56293-3694-4113-950A-18F476780865_zpswgi2kneq.jpg) (http://s1272.photobucket.com/user/polygon88/media/3BF56293-3694-4113-950A-18F476780865_zpswgi2kneq.jpg.html)

Mk.I underside:
(http://i1272.photobucket.com/albums/y390/polygon88/7A7A5B4E-4400-4DBB-B818-A9E14E5964D2_zpsmpthtbb4.jpg) (http://s1272.photobucket.com/user/polygon88/media/7A7A5B4E-4400-4DBB-B818-A9E14E5964D2_zpsmpthtbb4.jpg.html)
Its kinda ugly, but I didn't have a spare harrier or want to do much work to the bottom, also the landing gear outriggers are mounted on the fuel tanks.

Mk.II underside:
(http://i1272.photobucket.com/albums/y390/polygon88/5F541DFA-377C-4886-A413-17D0DED03F6F_zpsppie1stj.jpg) (http://s1272.photobucket.com/user/polygon88/media/5F541DFA-377C-4886-A413-17D0DED03F6F_zpsppie1stj.jpg.html)
Muuuch better looking using an actual harrier underside and nozzles.

I personally like the look of the intakes of the Mk.I, but the overall look of the Mk.II (nozzles, gear) looks way better. Perhaps a Mk.III will combine the Mk.II with the Mk.Is intake, reinstate the ecm stinger, add some conformal fuel tanks and have some storm shadows hanging off the wings.

Modified F-16 side project:
(http://i1272.photobucket.com/albums/y390/polygon88/E041426D-830E-478D-B094-C56ADDCAA47D_zpsmkbdejjy.jpg) (http://s1272.photobucket.com/user/polygon88/media/E041426D-830E-478D-B094-C56ADDCAA47D_zpsmkbdejjy.jpg.html)

Still not quite finished:
(http://i1272.photobucket.com/albums/y390/polygon88/537C4ABA-2E78-4491-9E52-62D4ABEB6AB2_zps14fipkph.jpg) (http://s1272.photobucket.com/user/polygon88/media/537C4ABA-2E78-4491-9E52-62D4ABEB6AB2_zps14fipkph.jpg.html)

Time for some updates

Recently I decided to go back to my tiny roots and finish off a few 1/350 builds:
Original prototype swept wing hornet, more of a flanker feel:

Upside down hornet, inspired by cf-18 false canopy:

AESA radar AWACS. Could have put that pod on a regular hawkeye, but thats not how I roll.

Measure what kind of munitions you want - create an open box with said dimensions - attach box to styrene skeleton - wrap sheet styrene around the flat sides, putty for the curves using the skeleton as a shaping guide - add sheet styrene with triangles cut out on the bottom - PSR

Thank you for the WIP images of your LO FAT weapons pods, really neat idea and happy to know a little bit more about how you put it together.

The Mighty Duck F-16 is quite striking with the side by side seating arrangement.  Wonder how the F-111 cockpit would fit into that F-16?

I actually did want to use an f-111 cockpit, but I din't have any in the stash. I think preliminary measurements showed it would fit quite well. Anyhow there is space for 2 pilots because I used the back end of an A-6 cockpit.

Mighty duck getting longer legs:

This is one of the main reasons I don't adhere to specific real world paint schemes - colour matching. I really want this to be a jasdf bird but I'm not satisfied with the way the light blue came out, it just doesnt look right. Kit paint guides arent much help either. I'm gonna have to strip it and try again.

-work on the cockpit shape
-distended center fuel tank like the EE Lightening instead of drop tanks
-double nosewheel

Looks better especially the light blue.  Still not 100% satisfied though, but I don't wanna strip and repaint it a 4th time so I will chalk it up as a learning experience and move on.

Awesome stuff as usual. I love your bashes, I think they are brilliant.

I'm a big fan of researching colors but switching them if they don't look right to your eye. I think you should trust what you see, and I think that leads to a more satisfying build

Official squadron motto

F-2xl coming along. One of the problems with this camo scheme is lighting, seriously almost every pic of the real one is slightly different.  But anyway now that I've applied the decals and finished painting and look at it more and more, I'm quite happy with the way it turned out.
All thats left is to make some CFTs, they'll be a pain to make but totally worth it.

Really great design. The Smig is sharp. My hats off, its tough to convert a double engine to a single when they have that big tunnel between the Nacelles (like Flanker, Tomcat) much easier when they look like a box (Foxbat, Eagle)

CFTS on the Gripen are subtle, but very sexy  :)

Prowler bug... hmmmm... put a prowler cockpit on a super hornet. Would have to widen the fuselage, something to mull over. Thanks for the idea :)

Settled for an ASW role for the hind and trying to decide a canopy style:

And now for my most ambitious build yet - a scratch-build 1/144 X-02 Wyvern from the Ace Combat games. This is going to be a long term thing, I don't care if it takes years but it been on my list for a while and it'll be a test of my skills.

For ASW Hind, how about "reverting" to a Hind-A cockpit and canopy?

I like the design on the right as well. Reminds me of the old Boeing cockpits which had the "eyebrow" windows.

I would say the right one also, it just looks more Russiany.
That and I like the small low cheek window that juts out farther forward than the rest.
Great job all around though 👍

I prefer the left one, with big Windows (like big eyes of a bird, with more personality)... :-*

I have been wanting to mount the front of an F-14 on a Super Hornet forever, hoping to get to it some day.

So would that be a Catbug?:

was that MiG at all inspired by Red Alert 2?

As a matter of fact it was, I was just going to do a straight Red alert version but then I placed the mig kit next to my f16xl and the idea just clicked.

1/144 scale?

Yep, its my new favourite scale

Well 2017 is off to a bad start. My airbrush compressor broke :( in the middle of a painting session.
I had to fall back on a half empty can of airbrush propellant and classic hairy stick to finish these builds.

First up, ProwlerBug:
(http://i1272.photobucket.com/albums/y390/polygon88/BE959E74-1294-4EB1-BD6A-68E7AB638B84_zpslig1e27m.jpg) (http://s1272.photobucket.com/user/polygon88/media/BE959E74-1294-4EB1-BD6A-68E7AB638B84_zpslig1e27m.jpg.html)
There's alot of bleed through under the masking tape because I wasn't familiar with using a propellant can.

Photoshop? We don't need no stinkin' photoshop!

Heres a 1/700 version along with a backswept berkut and a p-3 orion based flatbed transport:

I find the flatbed a concept kind of quirky, not sure how it would have actually worked out though.

Beautiful concepts, all!!  I do believe the flatbed proposals had a fairing between the permanent portion of the fuselage and the first freight item; that would make a lot of sense with regard to reducing overall drag.

Beautiful concepts, all!!  I do believe the flatbed proposals had a fairing between the permanent portion of the fuselage and the first freight item; that would make a lot of sense with regard to reducing overall drag.

Ah. I knew I forgot something. I think that's one of the drawbacks of the flatbed concept, it's a bit inflexible to always have to make sure there's a fairing available for any given payload.

Finally finished, some kind of 50's style carrier based fighter/bomber. From some 1/144 trumpeter/monogram F-86's, originally I didn't really know what I was going to do with this kit but a pair was only about $3, so I couldn't resist and got a few boxes.

Gorgeous work.  That cargo Bear looks very close to the Douglas C-132 effort.  I've got a small-scale DC-8 I'm tempted to use as the upper lobe of a C-132, may get a small-scale Bear to donate propellers.

Huh, that's funny. I know about the c-132 and even looked at pictures of it about a week before I started the cargo bear, but the entire time I was building it I never made that connection.

Like to use some of your concepts when I get back to new builds.

I'd like to see that :)

It's no E-2 but it's better than a helicopter.
Features:
AESA radar on front, back and sides (mounted on sponsons)
Folding rotors & wingtips
More powerful engines
Retractable gear

Now to get cracking at those ships.

Really like the F-2 and VSTOL.

The Su-ification of the Hornet (Platybug?), however, first reminded me of an "eggplane", but then I realized it's the perfect modern incarnation of F7U Cutlass (which, admittedly, looks like an eggplane). ;D So it has a charm of its own too.

Just a (hopefully)  quick build that has been in the cards for a while. My take on a navalized F-15, I extended the wings so that the outboard pylons would be inboard of the wing-fold.

Just as wide as a super hornet, but slightly longer:

Beautiful!!  With your permission, I'd like to adapt this scheme for a 1/72 navalized F-15 model.

I'd probably have(will, on mine) put the refueling probe on the other side where I could plumb it in to the existing plumbing for the boom receptacle, but that's just me.

Sure, here's the recipe if you need it: Tamiya paints XF-8 Flat Blue, XF-23 Light Blue, XF-66 Light Grey and white.

I put the probe on the right for personal reasons, as I am right side dominant, if(HUGE if) I were in the cockpit I would want the probe on the right side.
