I've never been a great fan of the P-47, esthetically, but it looks pretty good in this pic:

Holy HDR, batman! Images processed/abused to that extreme just make me cringe.

I agree completely, Frank.  I see images like that from a certain artist on DeviantArt all the time.  I love the subjects and I don't mind post-processing, but that is way too much to me, too.

Cheers,

I don't know, guys. Some of those images seem more like what the human eye sees, rather than what a single photo image sees. The human eye is a wonderful piece of machinery (especially when linked to the human brain) & often sees images much more clearly that a camera. Some of the layering done in those photo's seems to be aimed more at emulating the actual visual scene, rather than purely "artistic" images.

I've been noticing the difference between what my camera is capturing here on the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, as opposed to what I, sometimes even without my multi-focal spec's & only a diving mask, can see & the camera images are a poor substitute for the real (human eye) thing.

HDR  when used properly does approximate what the eye can see (details in both the shadows and in the brightly lit areas) and can be both useful and artistic. Cranking the HDR knob in Photoshop to "11" isn't extracting any extra information from the images used to make the HDR (if they even bothered to take more than one); it's just awful. Either take a photograph or make an impressionistic painting.

Here's a stroll through truly awful HDR: http://www.reddit.com/r/shittyHDR

Some of the pictures highlighted are actually nice. But most look hideous.

But...these go to 11.

I agree with Guy on some HDR images, to be sure.  I'm often frustrated how pictures still really don't capture what the eye sees in many environments.  I can't wait until cameras get there by default.  Look at some of the examples on the HDR Wiki page to see it done right.

However, the example of that P-47 looks bad to me and nothing like what I see in real life.  Here's a guy whose HDR knob clearly goes up to 11, as well.  If my eyes start seeing things like this, I hope it's because I've survived the nuclear apocalypse.

I suppose I wasn't really looking at the P-47 as a photo. Just a picture, and I wasn't sure if it was a photo or a painting until I noticed that it said it is a photo...

Logan, re: the Mig's, Tu's, An's, etc., I understand them being parked at Pripyat airport but how the Hell did the American stuff get there, especially the WW2 GI's? :-\
