Time for your North American T-6 Texan ideas and inspiration.

Perhaps the ultimate T-6: John Shell's Super T-6 racer:

For the whif-verse, perhaps a much developed P-64? Could be interesting to see a formation flight of one of those and a Boomerang, since they have very similar ancestry.
-
Or a developed NA-50 (of which there is a kit)...perhaps with an inline engine?

Since it was a wonderful trainer....why not a float plane version to train Navy pilots? Seemed like a logical version but I guess the Navy had enough trainers ???
It probably could have been developed into a nice little scout/observation float plane or even a land plane for the USAAF. Would have given Curtis and Vought some more competition ;)

John Shell's Super T-6 racer:
Needs bigger engine and smaller cockpit.
Something like the former Yak-11 trainer "Chechmate".

Some T-6's were modified to carry rockets and were used as FAC a/c during the Korean War. Look for "Mosquito FAC" to find more info.

T-6/SNJ with folding wings and tail hook for the full effect of aircraft carrier operations.

Heller's kit of the T-6 is one used by the French in North Africa. It is armed to the teeth (for a trainer). It has two kinds of under wing rockets. Plus mgs are added. It even has a shark mouth on its nose !!!!!!! The only thing wrong with it is the barrel of HVAR rockets only has holes on one end of the pod. Does anyone know where I can get a replacement for them ? I'm not sure about it's overall yellow paint scheme either but it still looks way bad though !!!!!!!

T-6/SNJ with fixed landing gear adorned in spats.
Post WW2 T-6/SNJ/Harvard combat use (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_American_T-6_Texan) (from Wikipedia):
Syria during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War.
Greece during the Greek Civil War from 1946-1949
U.S.A. during the Korean War from 1950-1953.
U.S.A. during the early years of the Vietnam War from 1955–1975.
United Kingdom in Kenya during the Mau Mau Uprising from 1952-1969.
France during the Algerian war from 1954–1962.
Portugal during the colonial wars from 1961-1975.
Argentina during the 1955 Revolution/Coup de etat/Putsch/Uprising and again in 1963 during the Argentine Naval Mutiny.
Spain: during the 1957-1958 Ifni war.
Pakistan during the 1971 India-Pakistan war.

Dan Hagedorn's book North American's T-6 is an excellent starting point for the real world
variations on the NA-16 theme.
http://www.amazon.com/North-Americans-T-6-Definitive-History/dp/1580071244 (http://www.amazon.com/North-Americans-T-6-Definitive-History/dp/1580071244)
The various original members of the NA-16 family were fixed gear and a twin-float
model was proposed very early.

Thanks Jon. Might have to purchase in the future.

Links pertaining to his aircraft. I suppose I missed a few but just reading up on this aircraft makes your eyes water after the first few pages of search results.

You can always dress one up as a Zero if nothing else:

Wasn't there one, or a few, done up to represent a Fokker D.21 for a Dutch film? if memory serves me correctly, it was Agent of Orange.

Soldier of Orange with Rutger Hauer. The T-6s played P-47s and at least one Fw 190.
Agent of Orange sounds like the title of a satirical black comedy about the Vietnam spray ops. ;D

As I said, "If memory serves me correctly"; it obviously didn't completely in this case. ;D I do agree with your characterization of Agent of Orange; though it could be an undercover attempt to improve citrus growers profits and political clout.

I've never seen either of those modified T-6 racers. Wow.
Tail hook: has been done IRL, but not with folding wings.
