This is my current plans for a What-if group build on the IPMS Ireland forum and is more a "when-if" than a what-if :)
Currently there are 10 variants of the US Army Strykers:
M1129A & B are basically same vehicle with different armament. Similarily there are different sub-variants of the 1130 & 1132
However the US Army are currently trialing a new version with a 30mm canon in a turret. This is a direct result of recent Russian moves in Crimea and Ukraine.
https://www.armytimes.com/articles/army-receives-first-stryker-upgraded-with-30mm-cannon (https://www.armytimes.com/articles/army-receives-first-stryker-upgraded-with-30mm-cannon)
And now we get into the realms of speculation. In my opinion one of the glaring omissions of the Stryker line-up was an Air Defence version. So my entry will be an ADA Stryker which I believe we will eventually see in the real world also.
It will be based on the M1128 Mobile Gun System platform, as it already has a "turret", and the Legend Productions ADATS system for the M1113
(http://www-legend.co.kr/wp/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/LF1286_1.jpg)
Just need to order the base kit and Legend set on pay-day
If anyone wants to join the GB just google IPMS Ireland Forum, register and participate. It's open to all....
-
I will be following your progress on this one. It really sounds like an interesting sub-type for the Stryker.
There are plans to do an LAV-25 air defense WhIf in the archives at LemonJello Heavy Industries, the kit is already in hand, along with some 3D printed bits I did up myself before changing jobs.
-
Not trying to rain on your parade but there was/is the LAV-AD fitted with a turret mounting a GAU-12 Equalizer 25 mm 5-barreled Gatling cannon, and two missile pods each with 4× FIM-92 Stinger missiles:
To me, a variation on this would have been the natural Stryker-Air Defence variant.
That said, I love the ADATS system so go for it. :)
-
I'm aware of that one GTX and yes it would make more sense, but the ADATS will look meaner 😃
-
but the ADATS will look meaner 😃
Not disagreeing there, :)
-
When if... :-). Its already been made :D
(http://www.deagel.com/library1/medium/2007/m02007041500001.jpg)
-
A variant of the MMEV I presume:
-
One in the same. You can see elements (turbine APU etc) fromt the ADATS M113 front hull relocated to the Driver side of the LAV-III hull.
-
Yes, I had seen those prototypes while doing my research but none in operational service.....yet! I did call it a when-if rather than a what-if 😃
-
I am just waiting for a nice build up
Bring it on !
-
Don't be in a hurry: base kit is on its way but have to wait till payday to order the ADATS....it's not cheap! And I just ordered a Panda TOR. I need to build more and buy less
(http://www.britmodeller.com/reviews/kittyhawk/35/tor/boxart.jpg)
-
ADATS just ordered from Hobbyeasy. Twice the price of the base kit 😀
-
Hmm, isn't that just always the way! :o
-
Base kit has arrived
(http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc69/35th-scale/Models/ADA%20Stryker/16688346-FA05-4BF1-89DF-67B98A459582_zpsnr7fmwrj.jpg) (http://s213.photobucket.com/user/35th-scale/media/Models/ADA%20Stryker/16688346-FA05-4BF1-89DF-67B98A459582_zpsnr7fmwrj.jpg.html)
Legends ADATS is somewhere between Hong Kong and Ireland
-
And where are you going to put the MGS turret? :icon_beer:
-
Yay! ;D ;D ;D
Well, what are you waiting for, now? ???
-
And where are you going to put the MGS turret? :icon_beer:
Yes, we want to know...
-
And where are you going to put the MGS turret? :icon_beer:
That's a good question. It's a lovely turret with metal barrel. Maybe get another Boxer and mount on that?
As for this build: I'm waiting for the ADATS so I can see what surgery is needed on the upper hull. Might be easier do before I put the hull together
-
Still waiting on the ADATS...should arrive any day now. But started on the lower hull and rear. Won't touch the upper hull until I see exactly what surgery in needed
(http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc69/35th-scale/Models/ADA%20Stryker/B6CF5339-6942-4A9F-95E5-CDF0164ECD82_zpseeufotjh.jpg) (http://s213.photobucket.com/user/35th-scale/media/Models/ADA%20Stryker/B6CF5339-6942-4A9F-95E5-CDF0164ECD82_zpseeufotjh.jpg.html)
But came across this story today which shows my theory of an Air Defence Stryker is not far fetched at all

-
Those bogies look like they took a lot of patience to put together!
Far more patience than I normally possess...
Impressive!
Brian da Basher
-
Not for an experienced armour modeller, they're pretty simple, really.
More importantly: I'm seeing a start & a start is a good thing! :)
-
Starting is easy Wombat, its finishing I have a problem with 😀
Thanks Brian, but they went together very easily. AFV Club kits are very well designed and molded. They just fall together
-
Coming together nicely! Looking forward to seeing the ADATS turret. :)
-
The ADATS has landed.
Standby for detailed updates/photos over the weekend
-
:)
-
It's a lot of resin
(http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc69/35th-scale/Models/ADA%20Stryker/EAD7C3EA-F404-4A64-93EA-6E06458C4520_zpsog0auuic.jpg) (http://s213.photobucket.com/user/35th-scale/media/Models/ADA%20Stryker/EAD7C3EA-F404-4A64-93EA-6E06458C4520_zpsog0auuic.jpg.html)
Beautifully cast though
(http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc69/35th-scale/Models/ADA%20Stryker/D644FDA8-084F-40A2-952E-11C62C94A7BE_zpsfzp0tbzj.jpg) (http://s213.photobucket.com/user/35th-scale/media/Models/ADA%20Stryker/D644FDA8-084F-40A2-952E-11C62C94A7BE_zpsfzp0tbzj.jpg.html)
Plus a large fret of PE, some wire and decals for a Canadian vehicle. 2 double sided A4 pages of colour instructions.
A lot of the bits are for the body on an M113 so won't be used
-
Nice! :)
-
Thanks Claymore.
Got the main bit of surgery completed. Lots of filling to do but happy with the new top deck
(http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc69/35th-scale/Models/ADA%20Stryker/B57AF577-9201-4F76-8EE5-7FC6430AE00B_zpsdlsppbxq.jpg) (http://s213.photobucket.com/user/35th-scale/media/Models/ADA%20Stryker/B57AF577-9201-4F76-8EE5-7FC6430AE00B_zpsdlsppbxq.jpg.html)
-
So is kitty apparently...
-
Raptly watching this one. Would love to get an ADATS kit for one of my LAV-25s, but I'm going to go the scratch build route for that.
Keep the updates coming!
-
Details on the resin look great! 8)
Good start! :)
-
Thanks Gents, glad you're enjoying it 😀
Well it has been a productive weekend and the ADATS turret is now together. Some pretty large pour blocks to be removed but no real issues except the sheer volume of resin bits. Doing Tamiya tape straps with PE buckles was the hardest bit
(http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc69/35th-scale/Models/ADA%20Stryker/CBFF9B51-AB1D-4793-BC4D-2BC75D6F9025_zpsoonj2rsr.jpg) (http://s213.photobucket.com/user/35th-scale/media/Models/ADA%20Stryker/CBFF9B51-AB1D-4793-BC4D-2BC75D6F9025_zpsoonj2rsr.jpg.html)
So here is how she looks now. I'll keep the two missile units off till after painting. One is held on here with blue-tac
(http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc69/35th-scale/Models/ADA%20Stryker/BCFC6807-FA5F-4380-A67D-16F26DF23B3C_zpspxl97zgw.jpg) (http://s213.photobucket.com/user/35th-scale/media/Models/ADA%20Stryker/BCFC6807-FA5F-4380-A67D-16F26DF23B3C_zpspxl97zgw.jpg.html)
(http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc69/35th-scale/Models/ADA%20Stryker/C5B8D485-F60D-407A-867C-2C986BA006DD_zpswyyccj8g.jpg) (http://s213.photobucket.com/user/35th-scale/media/Models/ADA%20Stryker/C5B8D485-F60D-407A-867C-2C986BA006DD_zpswyyccj8g.jpg.html)
And how it will look on the hull. A bit bulky but doesn't seem too out of proportion or unrealistic to my biased eye
(http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc69/35th-scale/Models/ADA%20Stryker/67132E83-0ABC-414A-9963-BF5D0D1C478E_zps2nxfi2r6.jpg) (http://s213.photobucket.com/user/35th-scale/media/Models/ADA%20Stryker/67132E83-0ABC-414A-9963-BF5D0D1C478E_zps2nxfi2r6.jpg.html)
Tonight I start detailing the upper hull
-
Not too bulky at all. Brilliant idea & very good build, so far! :) 8)
-
Looks right at home on the Stryker.
-
Looks right at home on the Stryker.
Sure does! Man, I'd hate to see this monster coming at me!
Great stuff!
Brian da Basher
-
It seems to have a somewhat 'Russian' look to me.
-
Thanks Gents.
GTX, I know what you mean, but the Russians do them bigger :)

More updates at the weekend!
-
Finally got all the little bits attached and she is finally ready for the paint shop. I did get distracted by another quick fun project. That happens a lot

Unfortunately the airbrush can't come out till the weekend so in the meantime where did I put the Westminster?
-
Seriously looking the goods, there! 8)

Ha ha I won't tell her that comparison has been made 😀
Primed, ready for the OD

-
Ahhh paint stage.. the bestest bit. Tie it all together
-
The primer stage's the bestest bit ... After that it gets messy! :o
:) :)
-
looking good
-
Thanks Gents.
Mine all slow down at the painting stage. It's not my favourite step. Sniping and glueing I really enjoy. The other steps are just to clear it out of the way. Might explain why I have so many unfinished projects :)
-
Well Gents, bench time has been in short supply lately but I did manage to base coat her and start some of the detailing. Decals also applied.

Next up is a clear coat then lots more details and weathering.
-
Yes, yes.. coming along nicely
-
:)
-
This is going to look so good. Very inspirational for my planned project.
-
35th-scale: there's some hi quality work going on here!
I look forward to seeing it completed!

Thanks Gents, Sorry for the delay in updating this build. It's all built now just needs weathering and lights , mirrors, tools and some stowage added

Really pleased with how it looks. To me at least the proportions look "right" if you know what I mean.

Somethin' went buggerup with yer links, mate, so I chucked on some gaffer tape & a bit o' bailin' twine!
Looks good! :)
(PS: I've been unable to find my digi-cam dude, so I have a feeling I may have over-painted him. Sorry! :icon_crap: )

Thanks for fixing the image links Guy. I gave it a shot too and found that PhotoBucket will not allow me to view the images at PB unless I disable my ad-blocking software. Not happening. Sooooooo, your kung fu is strong enough to fix the problem.

Thanks Wombat, much appreciated. Not sure what happened them....

Did you use the "Direct Link" feature in PB? ???
That's what I do, then paste the link into the message, high-light the link & click on the "insert image" [img] icon above the reply message box. Hasn't failed me yet.
-
Awesome!
-
Really looks "right." Well done.
-
working for me.. Nice job
-
Finally finished the Stryker ADV. Apologies for not keeping the build log up to date but with the PB woes and finding Flikr troublesome I've been posting more in the FB group than the forum recently. I shall rectify that going forward. Anyway, here we are, all done at last.
AFV Club M1128 hull with Ledgends A DATE conversion mounted on it. Painted with Mr Hobby Olive Drab and weathered with various washes, filters and pigments from AK, Mig and Tamiya
