Fiat G.55/56/59 et al.
« on: October 05, 2017, 09:02:55 AM »
Starting this new topic because there doesn't appear to be one to address these excellent Italian aircraft.

For a starter idea, I've been toying with the whif of the G.55S prototype being captured by the Germans, repainted in Lufwaffe markings, and attacking with a Bxx246 gliding torpedo.  The G.55S kit is readily available in 1/72 as is the Revell kit of the Fw190F-8 with the Bv246.

Second thought I expressed in Recent Acquisitions, a G.55B built during the war and fitted with the radar from a Fw190A-8/R11 as a nightfighter in either RSI or Luftwaffe markings.

Yeah, but with a Bv246 and in Luftwaffe markings, not RSI.  I'm very, very tempted to acquire the necessary kits and see how it all fits together.

An extreme high altitude variant with stretched wings and turbocharger (under fuselage):

Also known as a G.58 as Trophe and others have documented.

Essentially a G.59/3 but retaining the original DB605 (or license-built version) engine instead of switching to the Merlin.

Kind of, though mine was purely fictional and had two crew and different wing/gun arrangements than the real G.58 concept shown below:

Yep.

My favourite is actually the one shown below that with the contra-prop and stretched fuselage.

I dislike Centauro's canopy. So, what do you prefer?

In this order: Folgore, Veltro, Orione, and Centauro. Last one is a creation by Gabrielli, the others by Castoldi

Do you know why italian fighter were so similar, particularly cockpit area look the same? Did Castoldi and Gabrielli share papers?

At a guess, I would say strong customer input and, quite possibly, insistence.  IIRC, the equivalent Caproni Reggiane designs had similar cockpits and aft of the canopy fairings, too; despite the Re.2001 prototype flying with a clear-view aft canopy.

A Merlin-powered, navalized G.55S strikes me as a rather attractive proposition if the Italian navy had some carriers post WW II.
