Hi I posted some unmade and prototype Mustang Variants to Secret Projects UK and Greg suggested that I post them here as well. Before I do I will start by saying that I started doing some profile work for a personal project where I was trying to do as many aircraft profiles as I could by taking three view profiles by other artists and scaling all of them to 1/144 scale. I had several that had the top and side view but no front view so I did several front views to go with the top and side views, and was satisfied with that. Unfortunately I lost all of that in a hard drive crash. I was currently working on a B-17E top view at the time of the crash so that is the only one I had left, since it wasn't on the external HD that went bad. I decided at that point to finish the top view of the B-17E I had started. I was happy enough with the results of that and do the other views. I also decided to give GIMP a try as I had been using a free photo program I had gotten with a camera purchase. I started the side profile but made it 3 times larger than the original line drawing. When finished it was much better than the top so I started the top profile again, which turned out decent. Then came the front to finish. I was pretty pleased with the result I decided to continue. I'm not sure why I picked "Honi Kuu Okole" markings for my B-17E but after learning that it was the first B-17 shot down by a Japanese night fighter equipped with obliquely fired cannon I did research on that particular aircraft and that was my second set of profiles. Mostly I do aircraft that I like especially ones that I don't find profiles of. The B-52H i did was the fourth set that I did and I decided to do 61-0007 'Ghost Rider' since it was the first aircraft ever to be returned to service after being sent to the storage facility in Arizona. The KC-135R was next and I picked one from Sioux City Iowa as it is only 35 miles from where I live in Emerson, Nebraska. I'm getting better with each one I do, and one day I might actually get good at them ;)
So how I draw them. I use a mixed approach of coloring line drawings, correcting the mistakes, adjusting to the particular model, marking, and timeframe of the one I am working on. I generally use photos of navigation lights scaled down to the drawing. I also use photos of tires, wheels, some landing gear (B-52, KC-135), cockpit seats when I can find them, gun sights. I do this mostly because I am lazy and it is difficult to do intricate landing gear work even at the large scale that I work at. All or the WWII aircraft I did the landing gear legs. On the mustang variants you will notice the landing gear legs as well as other parts that fit were used on each which saves time. So in conclusion they are part coloring, part drawing, and part photo manipulation. it seams to work for me.

First up is my FTB Mustang from the line drawing done by Justo Miranda. Done in the colors of RAF Polish 315 Squadron. This was a Rolls-Royce project to make a mid-engined Mustang. I have been thinking of doing that one. There are a large number of pictures available since it is on display at the National Museum of the Air Force in Dayton, OH.

Next up is my P-51 with forward swept wings concept. I only had two pictures of the factory model and a low irresolution image of the factory drawing to work with, and that is about it. As usual the tires and nav lights are photo manipulated, as is the gunsight. I was able to "borrow" the seat and prop from my P-51H drawing. This should be the same scale as my FTB Mustang and my P-51H. Line drawing by Chuck Davis

Next up is the Cavalier Turbo Mustang III made by fitting a Rolls-Royce Dart turbo-prop engine from a Viscount airliner to a Cavalier Mustang II conversion in the late 1960's. There were very few reference pictures to use as a guide and those were lower res than I prefer. Luckily the line drawing was decent. I think the result is pretty good. This is the latest profile I have done. I also did the Piper Enforcer before this one, but to keep them in chronological order I will post this first. This should be the same scale as my other Mustang variants.

Here is the Piper PA48 Enforcer built as a new airframe in the mid 1980's loosely based on the Mustang unlike the Cavalier Turbo Mustang III which was originally a P-51D I believe. Since both prototypes have been restored and placed on diplay there are hundreds of good photos of both that I was able to correct most of the mistakes I hope. The line drawing was horrible with multiples of mistakes and did not have a front view. I took the Neville Franklin Cavalier Mustang front view, placed the nose section minus the radiator scoop of a
P-51D over it then modified it into what I think is a reasonably correct front view of the Enforcer. I did the Enforcer that is on Display at the National Museum of the United States Air Force. The other prototype is displayed at Edwards Air Force Base in California where the two prototyoes were evaluated. I hope you like them.

Thanks for the comments. You have great imagination of what could have been and what could be. I think I'm stuck too much in reality. ;) Also I seem to be a one trick pony since coloring line drawings is pretty much my limit, although I do have to draw things at times, and I am getting better at it. I have tried using a transparent layer and wasn't having any luck getting the layer to work for me in GIMP. I'll have to see if I can find a tutorial. I'm learning everything on my own, so I guess it isn't all bad!

This is my latest profile. During my research the engine to be used was a "Straight Eight" so instead of the four exhaust ports on each side of the fuselage, I put all eight on the right side. I believe that all of the exhaust ports are on the same side of the engine, but I had to choose a side, so depending on which way the engine was to be installed, would determine which side the the ports would be on. So did I guess right? Probably not ;), but I went with it anyway. I did a right side profile to show the exhaust. Since the flying/landed top profiles are virtually the same I only did the one. I colored it as if had been sent to Wright Field for evaluation. Amazing enough when trying to find a serial number that I could use for it I found out that 41-004 had been reserved for the XP-57 by the USAAC!! I love the interwebs:D

Hard to say. The 1929 Miller 91 auto engine exhausted to starboard ... but its shaft faced aft. If Harry Miller followed the same pattern for the L-510, the exhaust ports would have run down the portside :(
I'm now waiting for Jon to pop up with period drawings showing the entire Miller aero-engine development history ;D

Yeah after i got done with this I found a picture of one of Millers front wheel drive race car engines and of course the engine shaft faces forward with the exhaust ports to port. Well easy enough to change. so I will probably do that.

In the short time after the Wright Brothers first flew their Flyer in 1903, some had toyed with the idea of marrying the airplane with the automobile to produce the convenience of long distance flight with the ability to drive from the airfield to their desired destination. The first person to put this idea into an actual concept at least in the United States, was Glenn Curtiss of the Curtiss 'Jenny' fame. This is the Curtiss Autoplane of 1917. Being that it was under-powered there is not any information that it ever truly flew, other than some statements that it may have lifted off the ground in short "hops". After U.S. entrance into World War I, further development was abandoned so that Curtiss could concentrate on JN-4 'Jenny" production. It was shown at the Pan-American Aeronautic Exposition at New York City in February 1917 to public delight then it disappeared. It was constructed using the wings fron the Model L trainer, fitted to a hand built body. There are several large resolution pictures, both during construction, and at the Exposition, so that I was able to correct most of the mistakes from the original line drawings. This is the result. This is the front profile. I believe that the body was painted a light color, although it may have been left natural Aluminum. Since I think that it was painted, I went with a light green I found on a 1917 Reo car. The other choices I had were Yellow, mundane Grey, or White. I considered yellow, but went with the green instead. The patent states that an optional left hand door was available but I believe that the prototype only had the right side door so I provided both right and left side view. Since the propeller in the front view only covers part of the tail fin bracing struts and the top landed and flying versions are virtually the same I have only done one of each.

OK will do. It will take awhile with something as complex, detailed and large as it is. The B-52H side took me about a month to complete because the line drawing was S**T and all of the details I had to put in from looking at pictures. The B-1B line drawing is decent, but still I'm finding things I have to change. I just spent the last hour trying to make the wing slats "look" right. I could have left them in the wing on the landed version, but nooooooo......can't do that :)

I did this one for Greg. I may do others if I get time. This was easy since I didn't have to change colors. To do different colors would necessitate that I change all of the detail and contrast shading as it is color specific which will be time consuming.

OK, I have the side views of the Northrop B-2 done. Naturally I picked 89-0128 "Spirit of Nebraska" as my subject since that is the state I live in. Markings current as of November 2017. 1/2 size for the large aircraft, and even it the length is short it is very wide. Top views to come when I get them done.

Finally I have finished the top profile. It took 5 days just to shade the "fuselage" and the engine nacelles. I used over 100 different shades and it still isn't as good as I was hoping, but at some point you have to say "it is finished!" As always it is a large aircraft so it is posted half size.

I figure a KB-2 would have either a flying boom or a hose and drogue unit (either "stealthed" by material choices and, in the case of the boom, shaping) operating out of the port weapons bay (starboard one could carry an auxiliary fuel tank for extended range or, in this case, refueling capacity). I would go for a hose and drogue unit, myself, as it would be a simpler system to develop and install (and simpler generally means "less likely to glitch up").
Another option for the B-2 would be a RB-2 with the port weapons bay replaced by a reconnaisance module where the projecting part resembles the front halves of two TSSAM's fitted back to back. This would accomodate both photo and SLAR reconnaisance gear.

Good calls on B-2 options. Plenty lead time for KB-2 and B-10 flying diorama for spring 2021 IPMS meet. Clear plastic pole holding each one to show IFR in action. Can modernize B-10 with turboprops or something else or not at all. Either modern or 1930's schemes. So much to consider :-\

I am my own worst critic. I was aiming for a seamless blending, which I didn't quite achieve. Don't get me wrong I am happy with it, just not what I had envisioned.
