I keep thinking of a family of vehicles, some tilt-wings and some tilt-rotors, depending on mission, but using a common fuselage and many common systems. Engines would be similar, but with different gearboxes for the different applications.

There's some grainy you tube videos of it going on strafing runs at max speed, half speed, and one in the hover just hosing down the targets.
