H.I. Sutton does nice work

When the French submarine Surcouf entered service in 1934 it was the first in the world with an aircraft capability designed-in. It’s compact MB.411 floatplane, which folded to fit inside the integral hangar, was a work of art. But French aviation designer René Dorand had an even more ingenious solution to deploying aircraft from submarines: a helicopter!

Pitcairn 'helicopter-autogiro' concepts from the '60s.

Pitcairn started using the term for compound helicopters in the mid-'30s,
at the same time Cierva-Weir started using the term 'gyrodyne' for the
same kind of machine. Post-war the work at Cierva-Weir was taken up
at Fairey.

This PDF (https://pdhonline.com/courses/m502/m502slideshow.pdf) has a collection of old school - failed - wingless aircraft designs and others that haven't really been successful on aircraft, like the cyclowing. Some were intensely stupid (http://blog.modernmechanix.com/strange-lifting-force-used-in-novel-airship/), and were probably a grift on the naive and dumb.

The Cierva C.30 (and  licence built variants) has always looked right to me. I suppose a similar arrangement could be built on many fixed wing fuselages.

SARO P.220 concepts based on the P.531. The P.531 became the Westland Scout which in turn became the
Wasp.
