Image upload issues
« on: April 26, 2019, 09:21:46 AM »
I am curious to know, what is the limit for the amount of images one can post in one posting? Been having issues uploading, in forums like, 'other'.

Hi Charles

Posting images as "3rd-party linking" (from photobucket, imgur, flickr, postimage, etc.) I never found any limit, since it is pretty much "transparent" to the forum.

Posting as annexes, the max. number of images per message is limited by the forum administration.

Forum is currently set as follows:

Max attachment size per post:  1500KB
Max number of attachments per post: 4

This is only going to affect you if you are actually attaching files etc though.  There should be no restriction if you are linking to a external image hosting site though (unless there are restrictions there).  How are you trying to post?

Thanks. I am linking directly from the host site. As you can see by my recent photo post, I had to split my post in two. Many photos. I recall having to do so with the gunner Joe diorama too. Aw well. No bigger. I was just curious as it is kinda irritating to post twice for one posting.

I think the limitation is something inside the software and not actually a setting I can control.  I have had similar in the past.  It is almost as if the system 'chokes' if too many links are included in a single post (something like 10+).

Have you tried copying the image img address and dropping it in like this?

[ img ] http://* image address here * [ /img ]

When you click on the Insert Image button that looks like a picture on the message window menu, it inserts the img tag for you (minus my extra spaces so you can see it) in brackets. All you have to do is paste in the image address from your hosting service in between those bracketed img tags.

I've had no problem with 10+ links in a post but I keep my photo size below 1000 pixels wide.

Your mileage may vary...

P.S. Many thanks to kitnut for prompting me to edit this post so the insert image part was visible.

Exactly! That is what happens. I usually have to spilt the amount of photos into two uploads. But thanks. Good to know, it's not only me.

I think photo dimensions might play a role. I noticed on a recent post the board re-sized my image even though I set the hosting not to.

Try smaller pics with height/width dimensions of 1000 pixels or less and see if that helps.

Best of luck!

Multiple links, especially to large images, in a single post will slow things at the
server end, the forum server has to process the links, fetch the images from the
site, place them in the post, generate the post etc. The traffic and speed at the
source server will also effect the process.

Multiple posts are the better option, especially as, along with the wait for the post to
load, scrolling forever through a single post can be both irritating and difficult for people
on slower devices.

That’s because we have the max width and height of posted images set to 1200.

Again it’s an issue of compromise on size versus speed/bandwidth and display size,
as there are folks whose screen settings, screen size means many images are larger
than their screen easily displays, and they have to scroll right-left up-down to see
the image, again it can be irritating for some.

On the What-If forum, if you click on a very large photo that is bigger than your screen, it changes it to a smaller full view. Can this be done on this forum ?

Both are on the same basic forum software, however we have different modules
installed, and Paul runs it, along with Secret Projects, on a dedicated server.

The resize view function is purely that, it it doesn’t change the realities of server speeds
and traffic. I’ll look into it.

Thanks Jon ---

BTW, Paul has just switched the Secret Projects forum to a different software program (Xenforo) and it's now on it's own server. The What-If forum is getting move tomorrow onto it's own server. What-If will remain on the software it's on at the moment, although Paul has indicated he may change it to the new software sometime in the future.

I saw that the other day, and frankly the Xenforo layout looks like crap on a PC,
but it does work well on a phone or a tablet held vertically, to my eye it appears
to be biased towards mobile devices.

We'll see how it goes.

The guy who builds my desktop tower told me the last time I bought one, that these types of computers will be history for the majority of homeowners as they all switch to cell phones, pads or notebooks. The majority of my ex-workmates sort of confirm that, none have a tower, only a cell.

Yep, I have my old 20" G5 PowerPC chip iMac, 17" Macbook pro, an older 3rd gen iPad, 12.7"
iPad Pro and my iPhone 6S. I haven't had a tower since '06.

I keep the iMac because I have a full Adobe Creative Suite on it and am loathe to spend
the $$$ to subscribe to the latest versions for the laptop.

Most of the time I'm on the big iPad or the phone, the old iPad is used primarily for reading
ebooks I checkout from the local library. Paying for fiction I'll never read again makes no
sense.
