Well the Trumpeter MiG-23 arrived today so it was compared as soon as possible to the ESCI kit of the same type. So, from an Accurist's point of view what is goofed up on the older kit? Simple: everything.
That means it's perfect for whatiffing!
. Well, everything is of course, but significant shape issues can lend themselves a favourable jump start on occasion. At the moment I'm considering scratch building a TSR.2-like main wing for it along with a fuselage stretch. The older tooling is much more round and svelt than the Chinese kit which would work quite well aesthetically speaking for some previously unknown MiG prototype.
