Hi folks,

A thread for all your Steampunk and/or Dieselpunk (and similar) ideas and inspiration

For those a little confused:

Steam:

Diesel:

Now I am sure people like jcf will have an idea or two here.

The trek warriors are having things entirely too much their own way around here...time to show that
 lot the power...of STEAM!!!
for starters, read with awe and wonder the tale of

 THE STEAM MEN! (http://www.bigredhair.com/steamman/index.html)

( Plenty of pictures after the link-I'm always a little leary of posting images directly from a site...)

Your prodigious appettities thus whetted, I enjoin you to proceed to the informative directory of

The Google Difference engine compendioum of topics pertaining to THE DYNAMITE GUNS!!! (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=Dynamite+guns)

 ( I especially suggest
looking at the entry on the Sims-Dudley field piece. many of you will already be familiar with the
Zalinski devices, but I think this one will be new to many.

There was, sort of...The Fowler Armored Traction Engine. I hadn't been to the LANDSHIPS site in far too long,
but was delighted to discover an article detailing its history, with some fine drawings. Enjoy!

Along the lines of this thread,. I recently saw a book in Barnes & Noble that collected information from all the Frank Reade, Jr. stories of the late 1800's and collated them as a biography of the fictional character all with his many inventions; there's lots of inspiration here.

On the "to do" list is a steampunk gunship-airship using a Revell Zeppelin NT scaleorama'd to 1/76th (it's a shade bigger than the Hindenburg kit), an Airfix Stevenson's rocket, some HaT gatling gun sets to arm it and some HaT gardner-gun sets to provide mountings and Royal Imperial Airship Service crew. Biggest problem will be fitting it all in: the envelope might need a stretch to make the gondola long enough....

Wonder no more, young seeker! For the aspect of Dramatic Parlour Gaming has been explored by the
stalwart crew at FORGOTTEN FUTURES! (http://www.forgottenfutures.com/)

No "Space: 1889/99" specific references, but the FF role-playing system is on display, along with
a dizzying host of period reprints ( all public domain ) and reference material. So profusely illustrated
you'll need an absinthe' ( or two ! ) to calm your nerves after perusal!

Fact is stranger than Fiction !!
several of those, ie .... the Atlantic Tunnel http://www.forgottenfutures.co.uk/express/express.htm (http://www.forgottenfutures.co.uk/express/express.htm)
are actually passe' by Victorian times -- that story written in 1895 by Michel Verne (Jules' son) is just a description of the short Beach Pneumatic Railway that opened for public use in New York on February 26, 1870 ... tho it did not last very long due to other commercial items (the elevated railway) having more powerful backers.  The photos of the Beach system show it to be much fancier than the one in that article of Vernes !!

The remains of the Beach Railway tunnel and a carriage were unearthed in 1912 during the extension of the Broadway subway -- sadly nothing was retrieved for a museum.  Today, apart from the boiler of the steam-engine that powered the air-pump, the remains are buried under the concrete of a larger building.

What if we had trams like this one which is only 4ft high (sitting room only) & pass by climbing over each other on a single track >>>>>>

They're electric but how about powering them by steam ??

Despite much searching I've failed to find out who designed / built these trams.  All I know is that they were at a US funfair circa late 1930s/50's & apear in the strange-inventions film "Gizmo".

detract from the overall look.

A couple models by Dieter Bihlmaier I've been meaning to post for a while. I would consider these both more Dieselpunk (or alt-WW2 in the case of the tank) but I guess that's in the eye of the beholder.

The E-55 tank- LINK (http://www.modelermagic.com/?p=21187)

The airship "Grief"- LINK (http://www.modelermagic.com/?p=18893)

Too bad I haven't found any "in progress" shots or articles for these. I can guess at some the parts used but it would be cool to know for sure.

No! ;)

But there is some serious raptor (bird) inspiration going on with the cockpit & nose of this thing! :o

The general lines of that steam flying boat seem to owe quite a lot to the Latecoere 631:

Pretty thing, possibly one of the prettiest flying boats ever. Distressingly crashy though: 10 built, 4 lost... ???

How long until Industria Mechanika do a submarine based on the general shape of a Humpback?   Diesel-electric of course.

Seems a shame, but I suspect Water-borne planes of all stripes have a higher-than-average failure rate - hazards of the enviorment and all that.

The painting is gorgeous, and while I wouldn't build it as is, I will defiantely milk it for inspiration.

Who want's, can download the game from some abandonware-sites like abandonia.com or freewarearchiv.de, for example.
I will think over... ;)

I like steam- and dieselpunk and it reminds me a bit of the so called fin de siècle of the late years of the 19th century and its art, especially at the literature of Jules Verne and the printings and drawings of the "futureologists" of the ending 19th century.
In my collection I have the PC-game Syberia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Syberia) (I and II) of Benoit Sokal... it's a paradise of steam- and dieselpunk motives.

You know the New York Central System and the Pennsylvania Railroad did that for real, every day of the week except Sunday, for many years?

Chicago to Englewood, IL, with the Twentieth Century and Broadway Limiteds.

(http://enginemanwook.files.wordpress.com/2010/11/prr-broadway-nyc-twentieth-century-limiteds-race-east-at-inglewood-il-fall-1928-arthur-dubin-collection-111010.jpg)
Broadway Limited hauled by a PRR K4 4-6-2 on the camera's left, Twentieth* Century pulled by an NYC J1 4-6-4 on the right.
*Note that it wouldn't truly take on it's later "20th Century Limited" branding until the 1938 revamp by Henry Dreyfuss.

Quite aware of it.  My maternal grandfather took a shot of them heading east out of Chicago and made a nice sum selling it to the railroad whose train was leading.  All of his railway photos and movies are now in the National Railroad Museum, look for the name Lyman Barber Herrin.

NYC was The Old Family Business for my maternal grandmother's family... well, let's just say that when her grandfather had only one son follow him onto LS&MS/NYC, one on then-NYC-affiliated Nickel Plate and two defecting to archrival Pennsy, that must have made some REAL interesting holiday-dinnertable discussions... O.O

There’s something magical about a car modification that costs over $30,000 and results in making a car that’s louder, rougher, smokier and objectively less useful than when you started. It’s also now only capable of 15 mph. And yet, somehow, the car is so much better than before. That’s the case with Frank Rothwell’s steam-powered Land Rover.

Yeah, I got a case of morning sickness. When I was younger, I brought a 1968 Austin-Healy Mk IV Sprite back to life in a Dr Frankenstein way (eg; 1950 Packard rear shocks @ $10 viz Lever Arms @ $150).

So instead of English auto SOP of leaking just coolant, oil, fuel, electricity and money, this thing can leak steam, coolant, oil, fuel, electricity and money.

I agree with Frank3k, Frank R. Paul's art is very distinctive and recognizable.  He's probably my favorite pulp artist, too.  For modern sf, I'd probably pick Kelly Freas and David Mattingly.
