Title: Artoor's Lockdown thread :)
Post by: Artoor_K on April 03, 2020, 06:11:54 PM
Hello,

well , there is only one thing good in this lockdown-I can  stay home and built. So I'm building as much as I can...How long you can play computer games?:)

At first...F3F-3 from Revell/Monogram 1/32 which is...Gulfhawk with different engine cowling :) Because barrel-like fuselage is ... simply cute so I have to had this one.
Of course there is a whole list of cirrections that I should do but I plan to do...absolutely nothing :D

Well not at all but making wings longer as it should be? No way :D But new instrument panel, seatbelts? Why not...So without further delay...Let's go :)

That is an ancient - but awesome - kit! My Dad built it when I was a kid - it had working retractable gear and it was nicely detailed. I still have the pilot, somewhere.

It's going to be fun to see you build this classic in your own inimitable style!

Few things needs to be remembered while building vintage models:
-old model means old styrene. Old styrene means fragile styrene. Smaller the part, more fragile then :)
-bigger model, fewer details :)
-people at Monogram were clever. Check documentation before blaming anybody for decal error :)
-people at Monogram were also lazy. One new part doesn't make different aiplane :)
-check fit before sanding, sometimes  flash is really something important :)
-there is no such thing as thin enough plastic profile to restore raised panel lines. If you think is thin enough then it needs to be thined more :)
-water-based putty doesn't harm paint. Cotton bud used for polishing does :)
-all mechanisms are working better when knobs are metal or made of new styrene profiles
-sometimes montage sequence in instruction is logical :)
-aluminium foil from yoghurt seal is perfect for seat belts :)

After learning these rules I could put Grumman on it's own wheels :D Now I'm waiting for AK Rigging line to finish this one :)

It looks great! That is such a classic kit! I remember that my Dad put lanolin grease on the gears to keep them from binding/breaking.

Thanks :) Well , because they're tubby and colorful I suppose :D

After Grumman F3F-3 it's time for another shelf queen - but not airplane.

Another oldie but again, this kit surprisingly aged as well as F3F (or better)...

Monogram 1/24 Huey is also a big one. There are some signs old forms but easy to remove. So let's start...

This thing is a must-have in Vietnam Huey :D

I've removed molded-on seatbelts and made a new ones from aluminium foil and spare buckles. Seat cushions are made of Mr.Surfacer stubbed with stiff brush.

Some work today...

Surfboard after decals. Little tribute to lt Kilgore hat :)

New troop seat mad with styrene profiles, toothpicks and yoghurt foil :) Seatbels also made of aluminium foil and spare 1/24 buckles.

Instrument panel. I've cut out larger instruments from decal, placed them on styrene squares and glued to kit part. Not best but better than flat decal.

Instrument panel from behind. I wasn't sure if it can be seen trough front down glasses but...well...just in case :)

Exhaust pipe was empty. I've done sth simmilar to what I saw on walkaround photos.

Nice technique. Will have to try that some time. Certainly improves the look.

I hope that wonderful additional detail on the back of the instrument panel will be seen through the nose windows.

Fighting with flash on almost every rotor part :D Funny thing-I was thinking for few hours how to seal a gap between floor and fuselage in troop compartment. When I was checking ceiling and saw the same gap I started to think more intensively  :) Well , if I'll seal these gaps then I won't be able to open doors because this gap is door rail :)

To be serious...it looks awful and maybe I'll be able to make it shallower...

Today I found wire net so I removed kit part and used it in vents in fuselage.

@Artoor - I would not worry too much about the paint, most often it would fade under direct sunlight and touch-up painting with spray paint or brush would eventually give the aircraft areas of colour that would not match up or blend with the original paint.

Seriously , I really don't care about paint shade because like You wrote, it fades, changes shade after gloss cote, flat cote, after wash it's darker, pigments and oils are changing it even more.
I wrote it because I know a lot of modellers (better to say JMNs) who are searching whole world lookind for THIS EXACT shade :) And after weathering it looks like f.ex. normal, standard RAF Green :)

But I've readen today...Arguing with Joyless Modelling Nazi is similar to pig wrestling. After some time You get covered with mud etc. and pig gets more excited :)

@Artoor - agreed, the pig usually has a better time of it.

As for the Paint Police, they can all go have a mutual wank-festival as far as I am concerned.  I could never understand the intensity of their concerns over the color issue when trying to represent it on a model.  So much effort over nothing.

Anyway, that's all for Huey :) Sharkmouth is painted with masks. Weathering is done with AK,AMMO MIG, Tamiya and Vallejo.

Amazing job! Nice wear and tear, although you should have someone look at the oil leak between the transmission and rotor shaft. You wouldn't want them to have an accident over Charlie territory on the way to the surf!

I just had to have this arsenal plane :) I wonder if it would have a chance to fly with all these guns. AFAIK Jumo 004 wasn't good engine with it's short lifetime (I remeber that it had to be overhauled after 8h of running or sth like that).
It's an 1996 Revell kit painted with AK Real Color range, weathered with Ammo Mig, Tamiya and AK washes, pigments and fluids.
Very nice little fighter with great fit, unusual for Revell.
It's a pity that there is no larger model of this one - I just love shape of it :)

I seem to recall someone was creating a 1/32 resin kit.

Me.1099P is on the shelf right now so let's move on...

I've never liked this design as much as 1989 version but like pokemons...I want to collect them all so I bought one and it's good :)

Cockpit is quite detailed but seat is like old Revell. You know, same seat in different models :) After some search I found that is quite similar to A-7 Corsair seat so I used it as a basis for detailing (but not going mad with it).

Instrument panel wasn't shown in movie. I found visualization but without colors so I used them freely :)

There was no stick, just another panel so I did one like on cockpit visualization:

As for now, Moebius set is going together like a dream. I hope that it'll stay that way :)

The Batwing does look like it belongs in a proper SF, vs a superhero fantasy universe.

Finish at last...
Great model, there were some problems with engines fit but this had no effect on overall assembling experience.
The model is painted with Tamiya and Mr Hobby paints as usual. I've tried a bit of color building by putting shades of blue and grey as a base, which then were covered with Rubber Black paint. The model has no decals, subtle weathering was done with Tamiya and Vallejo pigments, as well as AMMO oilbrushers. Wash is neautral gray.

Hello everyone,

Yesterday I've finished Ka-58 by Revell (well, it;s Zvezda inside).
Nice box, great decals, instruction printed in color, it looked superb OOB. But during construction truth came out. Rough plastic, not matched forms (I mean f.ex. missile halves are postponed to each other). It was tiring job to put togeher this one.
I've made gunsight from few pieces of styrene and used resin K36 seats instead of styrene ones.
Ka-58 is painted in Airwolf-style on purpose :)
I've used Tamyia and Mr.Hobby paints for large surfaces and Ammo Mig range for brush work. Weathering is done with Tamiya pigments and Ammo Mig washes.

Looks very nice.

The shape lends itself to other uses as well.
For example, I see so NOD type Aircraft from Command and Conquer.
Wish I had found this when I started my attempt at the NOD Venom, might have saved bit of scratchbuilding
