Title: Saab JAS-39 Gripen
Post by: Maverick on January 05, 2012, 09:37:23 AM
Whilst trawling the web for some info, I came upon this pic which I thought I'd share.

Definitely Whiff fodder now given India is selecting between the Typhoon and Rafale for its next fighter.

That's plenty cool with the addition of the IRST ball alone never mind carrier capability.

I've always felt that Gripen lacked something in the fearsom factor by having only one engine.

I think they did that just for the retirement.
There was a thread on it ... somewhere ..., and my recollection is that it was done to celebrate the last days before retiring the older model.

The Gripen has long formed a pivotal part of my continuingly evolving alternate ADF.  It is pressed into a variety of roles across all three services being the primary mount of the RAAF flying reserve, the RAN FAA and Army Tactical Aviation.  It serves as the LIFT for all three services as well as a carrier trainer, is the mainstay of ARDU (Fanta Can) and the mount of the Roulettes.

It replaces a variety of types, some in service for decades, the oldest being the Folland Gnat to newest the Northrop F-20.  Others replaced include F-5A/B, F-5E/F, Jaguar, A-10, CAC CA-31 depending on the version of the alternate.

Lots of nice schemes are possible, the Insignia Blue and White RAN FAA trainer would look great.

^ Most interesting!  :D If the Air Force can get some Gripen trainers, how about a couple more Gripens for the Navy and the Marines? Their F-5E/N/Fs could use a modern replacement. And, damn, would a Gripen look gorgeous in those colours!  :-*

Did you read the update on the second page?

Update: On Sept. 12, Lennart Sindahl, Saab´s execuctive vice president and head of Saab’s Business Area Aeronautics, sought to clarify the company’s position regarding a potential teaming arrangement with Boeing on the T-X program using a Gripen derivative.

“With the new development of the Gripen E version we expect it to remain in that position for many years to come. But a great fighter aircraft does not necessarily make a good trainer. We remain focused on the continued development of the Gripen E and the fighter will never be a trainer,” Sindahl says. “As we stated previously, Saab always keeps its doors open to new business opportunities and if any of those should be further realized, they would be announced at the appropriate time.”

Iiiiffffffff.......that goes ahead I could see the Gripen (probably renamed Boeing Griffin) also replacing many ANG F-16 and F-15 aircraft, possibly also any combat types likely to be dropped due to sequestration, i.e A-10 in addition to the planned T-38 replacement.  A carrier based supersonic trainer that also goes on to replace some Hornets, oh of course it would be exported to Australia to replace the Hawk..... ;D

Very similar.  Reduce the dark green in area and replace it with black and you'd have a reasonable match.  The other two colours are quite close (and that just might be a case of the screen image being out chromatically).

Mmmm...... Australian Army Aviation has a fixed wing tactical strike and reconnaissance regiment?  Currently operating Jaguars but planning to transition to JAS39E and F by 2020 as the F-35B chosen by the RAN for the FAA was to expensive.

Just need to work out a back story on the forces creation and evolution from WWII onwards. ;)

When I saw the pic Greg posted, I immediately thought of your profile.  :) Looking at it closer, there is a difference, though. Your Gripen sports a genuine Ukrainian Flanker splinter scheme, while the camo in Greg's pic actually seems to be inspired by Swedish "Viggen camo", just in Ukrainian colours.

Armenian Gripen anyone?

Quote
Armenia Could Purchase Swedish Multirole Fighter Aircraft
(Source: Pan-Armenian Net; posted Nov 12, 2018)
Armenia’s possible acquisition JAS-39 Gripen fighter aircraft manufactured by the Swedish aerospace company Saab is currently under discussion, the Defense Ministry told PanARMENIAN.Net

According to the Ministry, Armenia is also considering the purchase of fighter jets produced in other countries in order to create a multifunctional air force.

Regnum reported earlier that Sweden has proposed Armenia to buy its multirole fighter aircraft.

Kommersant, meanwhile, said in June that Russia could ship 12 Su-30SM fighters to Armenia until 2024.

Canada's choice just got a little more difficult, reading in the F-35 thread over on SPF, it says the projected cost of an F-35 in 2022 would be the same as an F-18E/F.

hell F-35A is $77.9 million flyaway as of the last batch. Just for some contrast the Gripen E is "about 85 million" according to Saab in 2016. For Canada in terms off full up costs its always been cheaper than super hornet, Thanks to botched "interim fiasco" the public got to see that for full effect.

every once in a while we get to see a scheme that a whiffer could only dream of, in real life!  :-*

Hmmm, a production line in full operation vs. one that's trickling along, has a limited future and came close
to being shutdown in 2017.

yup, the choice might get made for them, the USN navy got their last batch, I Finland is in the air and Kuwait has an order (no idea where they are on that) but now that the USN is calling it quits, that's the beginning of the end for the Super Bug line. wait a few years and that option may not be available, certainly will cost more if it is as well.

That's cool they can buy Australia's second hand supers then.

the way we leak information to our adversaries, I'd be surprised if the USA let us buy F-35. Unless its a dumbed down version.

I recal the word was that they'd let Finland build or assemble F-35 - but wouldn't reveal how it works.

I would have said that was crazy at one point but the way the RAAF legacy hornets are flying off the shelf lately...  ;D

If memory serves me correctly the sale of ex RAAF Hornets to Canada was first mooted in the late 80s / early 90s, before the end of the cold war.

The story was that the Canadian Fleet was suffering higher attrition (or fatigue) than expected and they required additional airframes to maintain capability, with the still in production Australian F/A-18A/B being seen as the best option.  The idea was the aircraft would be transferred from existing RAAF stocks with Australian production being extended and perhaps switching to C/D models to replace the aircraft supplied to Canada.

The RAAF Super Hornets will be in service until the 2030s and the Growlers possibly the 2040s

In the early 1990s, Germany was wanting a cheaper Eurofighter and even talked about a single engined version or getting out of the program altogether.  What if this did occur and thus we had something such as a German Saab Gripen?

Always thought Europe was a bit silly developing aircraft in the same class as each other, generation after generation.  Ideally they would have shared the best each developed in each generation.

Europe has never really been a unified entity. Different countries have had different ideas about what they REALLY want from the aircraft. Just from basic geography Germany and Sweden would have different primary needs. And then you have countries wanting carrier capability.

What? And the decent, hard-working taxpayer of country X should line the pockets of the lazy *insert-generic-stereotype* in country Z?  :o Surely you jest!   ;)

First Gripen to accumulate more than 3,000 flight hours, I think.

Possibility if Germany had pulled out of the Eurofighter Typhoon program in the '90s:
