Has anyone considered a canard layout on lengthened fuselage with shorter booms. Some time ago I built a Lightning in this configuration using the Monogram 1/48 Kit.
I moved the radiators to the wing roots between the body and the engines (similar to the Mosquito), cut the tail plane into two equal parts and used these for the canards. I then added a taller rudder scavenged from a 1/24 scale Mustang kit that wasn't worth building. At present I am rebuilding this model. I have increased the length of the engine nacelle to streamline it more and have constructed contra-props for it. I am in the process of replacing the cockpit canopy with a Falcon P-47 canopy and am seriously thinking of giving a set of WW 2 RNZAF decals, just to be different. Would post a picture when finished, but stuck on the file size restrictions. Basically all my pictures are too big to post. Any advice appreciated.

We want to see pics! Try using one of the file sharing services such as photobucket. Failing that, email me the photos

Finally got it right for size.
These are pictures of the first incarnation of this model.
Will post updated pictures when refurbishment is completed.
Many thanks for the tip.

Love it!
Wouldn't the Lightning be perfect for the extended service life build, RR Darts instead of Allisons, radar in the nose instead of guns and a brace of Sparrows or Falcons under the wings.

Wicked design! >:D

Tandem wing. Extend the body forward, add another cockpit and wing section with engines, fare in the forward cockpit nacelle to the extended body and you have a tandem P-38 with 4 engines, now to solve the problem air flow.
The wings would have to be on different levels in relation to each other, one high, one low mounted.
But you get the idea
Great for long distance escort, recon or pathfinder duties.

^^^sorta of a bi-plane p-38 ?
-
No, not a bi-plane but a tandem wing.
High mounted at the rear and low mounted at the front.
Boulton-Paul did a design for a tandem wing bomber during WW 2 (British Secret Projects - Bombers).

As promised.
This is the refurbished model.
Comments welcome.
Added P-47 canopy, lengthened engine nacelles and fitted contra-props.
Plus painted in war scheme and put in RNZAF Pacific markings as a Corsair replacement, maybe.

I love your model very much! Thanks! :-* :-*
I will check if I have not made such a drawing on my site http://www.kristofmeunier.fr/#Sit (http://www.kristofmeunier.fr/#Sit) then I may draw a whole family of dérivatives, thanks again!

I have found one such triplex-boom canard P-38 (left below) but your one is very different (right below), and I added an intermediate (central below):

The Zwilling department of Modelnut's Aircraft Co. proposed 3 versions:

The XMCP-38Z has been built in 3 copies, the YMCP-38Z in 38 copies, and finally the MCP-38ZA in 388 copies. Glory to Modelnut's Co.! ;)

Wicked !
That is a great look

Love it.
Looks like the start of a family tree.

Thanks a lot! ;)
(The student in design is very happy to be approved by the chief designer, that could have condemned or crushed him...)

Love it.
Looks like the start of a family tree.
Thanks!
Uh, will you accept even the heretic asymmetric part of the family? ;) :

In the year 2000 in France, my friend Daniel Joathon invented a Spitfire similar to your canard P-38...

Now that's cool! 8)

What a killer concept!
Adding those cool RNZAF markings really pulls this baby together for me.
Nice work!
