Or maybe instead of Kamikazes, Japan adopts the Mistel idea:

But you can make the Bastard work for it.

Super Betty anyone?

Actually, there was apparently a Mitsubishi proposal for this.  Do you think you can mock up a side view, maybe with a shorter nose than you have there?

Quote
This brings us to the JNAFs second major error. Mitsubishi had requested permission to upgrade the design to four engines, but the JNAF refused. At the time Nakajima was trying modify the American Douglas DC4-E airliner to a long range bomber.  This aircraft was a first class turkey and was rejected by the airlines as uneconomical and by Douglas as an unworkable design.  There are those who maintain that the US Government knew that Japanese Navy wanted to convert the airliner to a bomber and wanted to tie up a major portion its aircraft industry.  Be that as it may, the JNAF ignored the old proverb ‘A Bird in the Hand is Worth Two in the Bush’ and suffered accordingly. The Nakajima G5N Shinzan never entered service and the four prototypes finished the war as transports. Two additional engines on the G4M would have allowed the designers to install adequate self-sealing tanks, fire extinguishers, and armor plating without sacrificing the long range desired by the JNAF. This in all likelihood would have turned a very good aircraft into an out standing one.  One only has to look at the Kawanishi H8K ‘Emily’ Flying Boat or the Avro Lancaster’ transition from the Manchester with its failure prone Rolls Royce Vulture engines.

The "Super Betty" with the Raiden's cowling and engine installations?  'Twould look sleek if done right.

In 1/72, cut off all flying surfaces, sand off all raised panel lines, fill any gaps to make the tube fuselage smooth.   Then engrave in a wide whorl.  Paint it brown paper.  Glue loose tobacco into holes cut into the ends.   Place a red and gold label of your own design 1/3 of the way down the ''top''.   Display proudly on shelf at the office.

Daryl,,,  you are on to a new direction in kit-bashing.    ;D
With three kits how about doing a stretch G4M with fore & aft main wings ?

My plan is to upgrade a 1/144 Betty with Wright R-2600 radials from a B-25 or a pair of turbo-props and make it a post war COIN aircraft. The R-2600 would provide a reasonable increase in power (and reliability)

Noice :)

The only change I'd suggest would be to get rid of the nose and tail glazing, ala the Wellington
and Halifax transport conversions.

You are right, but think on early soviet liners nose... and wouldn't be a nice amenity a cocktail lounge in tail observation area?  ??? 8) ... for tiny people maybe. :P

Given the interiors of these aircraft and the lack of a lower level/cargo bay, the noses and tails were almost always needed for baggage, tiny people cocktails, notwithstanding. :)
