Title: Suggestions and Issues
Post by: GTX_Admin on December 11, 2011, 03:20:04 PM
Folks,

Please post any ideas or suggestions or problems here.  I know there will be some, especially in the early days, so please be patient.

Regards,

Greg

Only minor issues - the CAPTCHA for the forum registration is really difficult to make out. Once I entered the correct sequence, I got an database error (a timeout error) but I was able to log in.

I had the same issue.

Also, if you don't mind a nitpick? "Sparring" should be spelt with two 'r's.  :D

Yes, I had some dificulty seeing the correct letters in the captcha, also...
I don´t know if it is a problem with my computer/internet settings but I cannot see emoticons and some other small images (only a blank square and a small red cross)...?

I will look into the Captcha.

Re the Similes etc, yes there is a problem - I am looking into it.

Title: Red-X images???
Post by: sequoiaranger on December 12, 2011, 04:46:48 AM
Hi!--just arrived here. Thanks for the invite. Seems that many of the graphics here, at least on my computer, are merely a red "X" in a box.  In the "reply" page, all the "smileys" have their "name", but not their image.

Any explanations?

True, but as we've all seen on various forums, some folks do to tend to go 'spare', so Sparing Room would be appropriate.

Yep basically the same issues. The option to listen to the letters works well though. That's how I registered.

I experienced the same problem myself during the registration process and again while making changes to my member profile to add my avatar and some other tweaks.

***Update

Same thing again while posting this comment.  Had to open a new page and close the original at which point, my comment had been posted.  Certainly odd and hopefully it can be resolved.

Not urgent and probably not an issue that affects everyone, but do you know if Simple Machines offer a mobile interface for their forums. I know some forum software does. Trying to post from an iPhone is a pain, it's one of the things that bugged me on the other forum.

Cheers,

Chris

I believe they do, but I'm not certain. There is also this: http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=2504

Needs to be enabled by Greg too, but it's easy and instructions are in that link.

Yep, and if you place the cursor on one and select view image or open in new tab/window what have you (browser dependent) it gives a 404 "Page Not Found Error".

I think it may be a setting in the Themes controls.

These are the URLS for the two mystery icons:

http://beyondthesprues.com/Forum/Themes/green_theme_v2_2/images/icons/kisi.gif

http://beyondthesprues.com/Forum/Themes/green_theme_v2_2/images/icons/saatpro.gif

Both return a 404 error.

BTW the "? in a Square"/"red X in white box" do not show up in Firefox on my Mac, but do in Safari.
However, when View Page Source is selected in Firefox, the URLs are there in the html.

There is a similar problem on the Child Board pages:
http://beyondthesprues.com/Forum/Themes/green_theme_v2_2/images/on.gif

http://beyondthesprues.com/Forum/Themes/green_theme_v2_2/images/off.gif

In Firefox the first column says New Posts or No New Posts, in Safari it is the
"? in a blue square" that returns a 404 error when Open Image is selected.

Personally, I'm not too sure about the new smilies. They seriously affect spacing of the lines . And some are rather ambiguous, I think (counteracting their intention of making things clearer). The "sad" one - :( -, for example, looks more sulky than sad. Or the"roll eyes" -  ::) -, which doesn't roll the eyes, but looks like someone who didn't get the joke.  :D

And a "thumbs-up" would be great to have. "Worship", too, but not as necessary.

 This one's great, though. Describes my current medical condition to a T. *blows-nose-for-100th-time-today* Damn trunk plague.

I am of the same opinion, while they are definitely different, the larger emoticons certainly do create problems for spacing.  I usually use the original :^) or ;^) in most cases and avoid the animated versions.

In the other schemes, the Quick Reply box was just fine, but in this latest one, it doesn't wrap - it just keeps writing on a single very very long line, scrolling the window sideways as I type... rather annoying! :P

I am seeing the same thing with quck reply activated and I suspect it has something to do with the script needing some tweaking to establish the box size.  Finding that particular script is the challenge.

In regards to the Quick Reply box, it works fine in the Blue version of the theme,
so if one really needs to use QR, then, for the moment, changing their Theme
setting is the way to go.

So the glorius writers of the code are not organized enough to actually standardize settings?  Oy!  Where is the quality control and metrics to whip these guys into compliance? :^)

The Green version is a modification of the SMF Default-Curve Theme done by Tah Zonemaster, not
the SMF team. New theme variations can be created by anyone, so any standardization is up to the
individual creator. So, if one doesn't use a particular feature, they may not be aware of a problem.

The final solution is to turn off features like QR and limit language settings, like some forums,
which I personally prefer not to do, or we just accept the nitnoys that are part and parcel of
our wondrous Digital Age.

Hi Folks, interesting forum....<thumbsup><yes there should be one> ;)

1. I got all the error messages when trying to register, plus it took agaes for the verification e-mail to come through, making me think it hadn't worked and causing me to go back to the registration process for more error messages. I got in eventually (obviously), but I can see less patient people giving up....

2. When trying to find the forum at work, without the benefit of the invitation e-mail (thanks, BTW), I tried a websearch for "beyond the sprues", and all I got was the following link, helpfully posted on Gekko Graphics' page:

www.beyondthesprues.com (http://www.beyondthesprues.com)

The trouble is that all there is at that link is a page from Simple Machines saying "there's going to be something really cool here soon", but with no clue about how to find the already-running forum. Surely there should be something there, even if only one button saying "here be the forum"?

Best of luck, anyway!

Not quite - was asleep.  Jon used the button though:

It isn't so much an automatic filter though as more of idiots (I would use other words but I don't want to offend anyone) who post their crap.  As soon as one of them does show themselves, we try to hit them straight away.  That said, we are looking at some changes to make it harder for them.

Keep reporting any of them though folks.

I was wondering if it's possible to have an option in 'My Profile' where you could select what you'd like to appear when someone picks 'Show unread posts since last visit'.  There are numerous subjects which just don't appeal to me, and to have an option which would -- erm, sort of filter out what I'm not interested in, would save a lot of time trolling through what has been posted since the last visit.
Title: Re: Suggestions and Issues
Post by: GTX_Admin on January 28, 2012, 06:12:27 AM
Any filter would really require the members who make the posts remember to add in the appropriate filter words I think.  Will have a look into though.

Post by: kitnut617 on January 28, 2012, 07:57:26 AM
I was thinking more of a list of the boards and/or 'child' boards Greg, where you could go into our own 'Profile' and click on the boards you want to see frequently.  It wouldn't switch off anything when you look at the main page, just when you click on 'Show unread posts since last visit' or 'Show new replies to your posts'

there is an 'Ignore Boards' option in your profile, and as we re-vamp the forum and get its format

An issue that keeps recurring for me, is when trying to access threads which have very large photos attached (pixels wise) and lots of them (F-35 thread for example), my computer just won't open the thread. It just freezes up --

any suggestions ?
Title: Re: Suggestions and Issues
Post by: GTX_Admin on August 15, 2012, 02:15:30 AM
It sounds as though the problem might be on your end.  Is anyone else experiencing similar?

I will have a look at the F-35 thread to see about trimming/compressing some of the images.

Title: Re: Suggestions and Issues
Post by: kitnut617 on August 15, 2012, 02:38:28 AM
It's not just the F-35 thread Greg, some images which are posted are way bigger than what my monitor displays and it's a 22" one.  Then when there's a lot of them it's possible that the ISP I use just slows or stops the connection.  Even the Hughes Hercules thread where I posted a bunch of photos does it now (I tried to down size the pics by using PhotoBucket as all of them are in the 5 mg size originally)

Anyway, I can only get out of the freeze by doing the CTrL, Alt, Delete procedure.
Title: Re: Suggestions and Issues
Post by: GTX_Admin on August 15, 2012, 02:51:48 AM
It still sounds as though it might be a issue on your end though..unless of course others here report the same problem.  Either way though, I will endeavour to go through the threads to compress/trim some of the larger images.  This might take a while though so please be patient with me.  To help me, just PM me any particular threads (such as the F-35 one you refer to) that you do note problems with.  This will speed up the process. ;)
Title: Re: Suggestions and Issues
Post by: ChernayaAkula on August 15, 2012, 06:53:24 AM
While my PC doesn't have problems loading threads with big pics, I'd also welcome a solution to that. Don't get me wrong, big pics are great, but in some cases they're just far too big to be of any actual use. Take the F-35 thread, for instance. Of the recent bomb drop pic, I can only see the F-35's forward fuselage. Anything aft of the pilot needs to be scrolled sideways.
Over on ARC, the software automatically resizes pics that exceed a certain size (to be determined by the admin, AFAIK) to that size. Clicking them will toggle the full size view. Clicking them again will revert them to their reduced size. The maximum width is 1024 pixels, I think. Anything larger will be reduced to a width of 1024 pixels. Personally, I think that's a good solution. I don't know whether our forum software has a similar feature, though.
Title: Re: Suggestions and Issues
Post by: jcf on August 15, 2012, 12:25:48 PM
I set the max width to 1024, if this isn't large enough I'll bump it up.

Hey guys, I'm having a very minor issue lately in regards to new posts.  I always check the forum by going to "unread since last visit" and then go through them all.  Lately after I do that and get that list down to zero if I go back to the "forum index" it will say that there is a new post in the "physical models" section yet if I go there via any of the links to that section (including the "new" button) there is NOTHING.  I have to click "mark all messages read" to get it to clear and even that doesn't work until the 4th or 5th time.   Just wanted to let you know.

Idea as an adjunct to Buy-Sell-Trade, and I'm willing to do the work on keeping it updated if people keep me informed... on a collectibles board I'm a member of, we have a Who Wants What spreadsheet on Google Documents so we can either check others' wants against our stashes or more commonly keep an eye out (the war between Transformers collectors and scalpers is pretty cutthroat, so we try to help each other out when we can so nobody gets fleeced.). I'd be glad to set something similar up for here...

Yes, I have noticed that.  Am looking into.  Although a minor annoyance, I don't see it as a major issue though.

Me either but the thing that got me was its always in "physical models" even if no one has posted in there since my last visit.  Just seemed rather odd.  Thanks for taking a look man.

It is obviously a side effect of the recent change to that area - just need to work out what specifically.

Greg, here's the doc that inspired my suggestion:

Don't know if non-members can view it, but it's worth a try. Failing that, I'll screencap and post that.

Just stumbled on a small issue which happened when I changed my email address in my 'Profile'.  The system didn't send me a conformation email to re-activate my account (thanks to Jeff I can now access the forum).  But then I've also notice recently when someone sends me a PM, I'm not getting a notification email either.  I just checked my Profile settings and I see that it should be doing that as it is set right.

Not the same situation, but similar...I no longer get email notifications when people send me Personal Messages. I wonder if there's some setting that needs tweaked deep within BTS.

Suggestion for Ideas and Inspiration: Maybe add a subforum of "Build Planning" for guys still in planning phases, then add links to related BP threads in the first post of each I&I thread? (For example, linking to my F-15SE/Special and Mike's F-15SMT+ threads in post 1 of the F-15 thread, kinda see who's doing what that may benefit from shared experience.)

Last saturday I couldn't load BtS between 8.30pm & 9pm local eastOz time - tried several times but gave up.  Recently the site has been hanging-up when I try to make a post (doesn't appear to be a "timed-out" problem) - have to kill my browser & try again.

I once got email notification of a PM but the PM never showed up here on the site.

Sounds like we need to buy more bandwidth ???  The downside of being a popular, very active site ;D
Title: BtS not seeming to like my android phone anymore
Post by: dy031101 on February 28, 2013, 12:14:13 AM
Okay, here is the problem.  Since last week I,ve been unable to view a lot of pictures linked from external sources.  Which means that BtS banner and icons, as well as the majority of pics in the profile section, which I most-frequently visit, would show up in my android browsers as broken links......  If I have access to its web address, I can still view them directly, but I cannot view them via BtS.

I tested both at home and at my local library with the same result.  Would you and/or your crew look into this?

Thanks in advance.

I'm not ruling out the possibility that my issue could be caused by something on my end.  Right now I'm still figuring things out, the only things I know for sure right now being that the problem holds for both mobile and non-mobile network connections, so I doubt it has anything to do with network filtering (Wi-Fi in my local library, for example, blocks any videogame-related websites)......

Still working on the slowness issue - server related I am afraid.

Re the indication of new posts, it is not just you.  I believe it may sometimes result when someone has edited an existing post.  It won't necessarily show up as a new post when you look but somehow the software indicates it.

Something I have noticed recently is a delay in eMail notification from the forum to my own eMail account for PMs that I have actually read and responded to and subsequently removed from my PM in-box.  I thought at first it was just me not paying attention to events and time but not the case this morning when I received an eMail notification of a message to me via PM from Gingie (Graeme Davidson) that I had read, replied to, and then deleted from my PM in-box.  That was two days ago and the PM notification just showed up this morning to my eMail account.  Has anyone else experienced this issue?  Trying to determine if it is my eMail that is delaying the notifications or the forum software at this point as it is really not clear what is to be blamed for the delays.

I recently discovered that I haven't visited the "Current Builds"/"Physical Models" section of the site in several weeks. It appears that it just doesn't show as containing new posts for me when I look at the main forum page. The "Profiles and Pixels" and "Stories" sections light up in bold when they contain new posts, but neither "Current Builds" nor "Physical Models" do so.  ???

Could the "Physical Models" child boards be moved to show up on the child boards bar on the main forum page, sorta like they do for the "Ideas and Inspiration" section? Or would that create confusion with the "Profiles and Pixels" and "Stories" sections?
Title: Re: Suggestions and Issues
Post by: Jeffry Fontaine on September 24, 2013, 09:08:33 AM
Hi Moritz,

I understand what you are asking for and from what I can see, it would seem that splitting the sub-forum Physical Models and raising it up one level to become a full forum might take care of that issue.  Then we would have a separate forum for Physical Models and the child boards within would have the same rank/status/level as the other forums that were in the Current Builds sub-forum.

Not sure if we really want to do that but maybe putting it to a vote to see how the others feel about it and we can go with the majority decision.

Other options:

1. Leave it all in one forum but promote the child boards to the same status as Physical Models, Profiles and Pixels, Stories, Aero-space.  In the process it might be necessary to rename them to reflect the association with the original Physcial Models forum:

Physical Models - Sea
Physical Models - Land
Physical Models - Scifi and Fantasy
Physical Models - Other

To be honest, I am not keen on another change but it can be done.

2. Combine the child boards (Sea, Land, Scifi and Fantasy, Other) again under Physical Models (as it was previously before it was divided up).

Yep, that's probably the only thing that'll work. I tried some other relationship changing and that made
no difference.

One thing I noticed is that we have everything under General Category, if we are to rearrange things
I'd go further, add new categories and split it out that way. It won't change the look or arrangement in
any startling way, but some folks might need to redo their ignore preferences.

The last couple of days the site has been really slow, with numerous "Can not display page' messages and multiple 'refresh' having to be used. Also the 'attach image' feature disappeared one day although it seems to be back now but I've not tried it to upload a photo yet.

And now while trying to post this, there's no 'Post' button, I had to abandon the reply I was doing and redo the message to get the 'post icon to show

Been having issues myself, mainly because the previous tenants took a power cable with a unique plug connector that can't be replaced until the new year meaning that while we have an internet connection there is no power to it.  Connection is currently via my phone being used as a mobile hotspot.

I'm having the same problem and have cycled through the themes and made them default (including the pink themes) and I still can't see the banner images. It's not a plugin issue - I switched to Edge (which I've never used to log into this site and has no add-ons) and the images are still missing.

In the HTML code for the "top-section" div (where the header images would be), the racing snail gif is there, but links to the images are missing.

OK, there's two ways that can be used to sign in when you come onto the forum.

First way is at the top left under the logo aircraft.
It says 'Please login or Register'. Then under that are four rectangular boxes. Fisrt one is for your user name, second one is for your password, third one you can pick how long to have the session and the last one has a green background and says 'login'.

Second way to login is a bit further down in the set of names for pull down menus. It goes 'Home. Help. Search. Calendar. Login. Register'.  OK, when I use my cell phone I have to use this 'login' way.

Dunno why it's defaulting to the other login on your phone.

Firefox. Windows 10. I log on & off 2 or 3 times per day, usually. No issues on WIM, which uses a similar set-up from the look of it.

Can an admin edit the first link to the Harry Woodman book on this page (http://beyondthesprues.com/Forum/index.php?topic=254.0) and replace the wwi-n-plastic link with the Internet Archive link? http://web.archive.org/web/20080122044909/www.wwimodeler.com/harry/woodman.html (http://web.archive.org/web/20080122044909/www.wwimodeler.com/harry/woodman.html)

The first link now goes to a page that tries to install a malware plugin.

I seem to have problems with quoting posts. I click the Quote button, but only get a bar that says Loading... No quote, however long I wait. This has been happening for a long time. Screenshot attached (reduced size). Firefox on Windows 10.

It only happens if the Quick Reply feature is turned on/open, simply clicking the - in the box will close it
and the problem goes away.

You can turn it off in your profile:
Profile->Modify Profile->Look and Layout->Use quick reply on topic display:(pulldown)
don't show at all
show, off by default
show, on by default

I have the same.  The problem appears to be a Photobucket problem since that is where I have stored the images involved.

Yeah! I just noticed that the emojies have disappeared.

I've found another 'Error' message ----  when I clicked on Profile and then 'Show Posts'

This comes up ---

"Please try again later. This member's posts are not currently available due to high load on the server."

For the last few days, the home page header has disappeared, just shows a white square with a no entry symbol in it. I tried the toggle arrow in the top right corner to see if that was what caused it and it wasn't.
All the GB thumbnails are showing though.

Hello O Worthy elders of the internet.

I had a few issues today trying to put up images for the Shilka Update build.
Initially I had 7 images in the post and the Forum server consistently errored out with a Database Error. I have an image of the Server Error reply but it is pretty non-specific and useless as to actually reason of failure.

So I was wondering is there a limit to the numbers of images that can included in a single post ?
There was a quote in there as well, which I also removed as part of the process to find out what was the problem, in case the server was parsing the Reply Text.

No biggie, eventually got around it by breaking the post up into 4 image chunks.

Cheers Brian T

I'm not a WEotI but I've found there's a limit on images - not sure if it's a number or total data size thing, though.
Title: Re: Suggestions and Issues
Post by: GTX_Admin on September 14, 2020, 12:59:56 AM
There are limits upon:

Max attachment size per post
Max size per attachment
Max number of attachments per post

But none that I am aware of if you are embedding using an external hosting service.

There are also Maximum allowed post size limits which may be triggering something here despite it being character total limited.

Which url do you guys have bookmarked:
http://beyondthesprues.com/Forum/index.php (http://beyondthesprues.com/Forum/index.php)

or

https://beyondthesprues.com/Forum/index.php (https://beyondthesprues.com/Forum/index.php)

If you're not using the one that begins https, then you'll get the "not secure" message regardless
of browser and it doesn't actually mean the site is "insecure", it's that the connection between
your device and the site is in the open. Edit the address on your bookmark by adding an s.

So, to recap, the difference between HTTP vs HTTPS is simply the presence of an SSL (secure sockets
layer) certificate. HTTP doesn’t have SSL and HTTPS has SSL, which encrypts your information so your
connections are secured. HTTPS also has TLS (Transport Layer Security) protocol that HTTP lacks. HTTPS
is more secure than HTTP.

A weird one just happened . . . when writing a post, I inserted some emojis in the middle of sentences. All the text in the sentence following where the emoji was placed was immediately reduced in size to the smallest size allowed. I could resize things back to normal, but when posted, the resize control codes were showing, so that I had to further edit the post to remove them . . .
Here is an example :-'When I insert an emoji.  :o [size=78%] the following text is reduced . . .[/size]

When I resize it, the control codes are visible.'[size=78%]
