Wasn't Brawl (the Decepticon tank, misidentified as "Devastator") in the first Michael Bay Transformers basically an upgraded "super Abrams"?

Random idea:  what if the XM-150 152 mm gun/launcher from the MBT-70 had been carried over for the M1 Abrams?

Random idea:  what if the XM-150 152 mm gun/launcher from the MBT-70 had been carried over for the M1 Abrams?

I had similar thoughts with an infantry support tank based on the M1 armed with the short tube gun/missile launcher of the M60A2/M551 which would look good but in reality would suck if you were still using the original ammunition and propellant designed with the completely combustible cartridge and the artillery style interrupted thread "Whelen Style" breech mechanism.  Better to adapt the existing 120mm cannon to fit the 152mm tube and use a completely new design semi-combustible case based on the 120mm gun ammunition which would make a lot of sense and certainly make it safer to operate and provide a much higher rate of fire as a side benefit when using the sliding breech block design that is pretty much standard for all tank guns.

I was testing the idea of the 152mm projectile and the 120mm semi-combustible cartridge and determined that in 1:35th scale the diameters of the projectile and the cartridge are close enough to pass for my standards.  See attached image of my concept that was modeled in SketchUp.

If you were going to model the longer tube of the XM150 Gun/Missile Launcher with the higher velocity ammunition you could do the same for the ammunition for this by mating the 152mm projectile with a longer 120mm cartridge case.

The second attached image shows the shorter gun tube on an Abrams that was made by someone else as a SketchUp model to be shared.  I used the original model after downloading and then modified it to include a bulldozer blade.  The gun tube was shortened and the diameter increased to approximately 165mm to come up with a concept for an M1 Abrams Combat Engineer Vehicle to tackle obstacles and perform minor earth moving tasks.

Why mess with perfection?  However, another "what If" I have plans to make is mating the M247 to a M1 chassis.  The way it should have been done in the first place!

I wonder, would it be plausible to develop a mobile gun carriage derivative so that the artillery could keep up with the tanks?  Or a variant carrying multiple MLRS launchers?

Have 1/35 Abrams in stash.  I build to be 1/72.
Could be super multi-turret tank.
Could be mobile platform with rail for rocket assisted launch of fighters.

No doubt they'll be added by some bogan tank driver, Greg.  ;D

That finish looks good but one picture is of an M88, not an M1a1.   I'm also wondering how to reproduce it.  I fear it's one the after-market crowd will have to make for me.

Only the paper one appears to be realistic looking.  The handmade one I don't think I'll be bothering with, while the photoetch and decal ones appear rather unrealistic to my eye,.  Problem is, thats for the Cam-Net.  The panels on the Abrahms and M88 look rather different, rather "flatter" and with large areas of smooth surface.   I think I'll give the paper one a go though, as I have a couple of vehicles which need some cam-net which it would look good on.

2 stupid questions:

1. What all's packed into the Breacher's turret that would need room made if you lopped it off and plopped on one off an M1A2?
2. Any decent Abrams in 1/48? (Not like the Tamiya wire-out-its-butt "U-build toy"... unless that's better than it's given credit for.)

Duane Pfister actually built one a long time ago in a modeling magazine far away called Military Modeler or maybe it was Scale Modeler magazine.  I remember that both magazines were published by the same company and that the publisher was located in the greater metropolitan area of Los Angeles, CA.  Duane Pfister was a regular contributor to both with a variety of historical and what-if modeling subjects that were all interesting in one way or another.  Anyway, Mr. Pfister (now deceased) swapped out the main gun from the M1 Abrams for the 125mm tube from a T-72 and added a few other unique to Warsaw Pact vehicle parts and painted it up as an Iraqui Abrams that was supposed to have been modified by General Dynamics for sale to Iraq during the Iran-Iraq war period.  Of course a search on-line provides nothing image-wise.

Look at what they did with their Challenger I and IIs, lots of add on armour, stowage boxes, maybe a GPMG instead of the commanders .50cal.

The British army was apparently quite keen on the Abrams before the 91 Gulf War demonstrated that the Challenger wasn't half as bad as they had been saying.

Was reading that in the late 1970s Britain briefly considered UK importing XM1 (later M1) hulls & turrets and combining them with British-made components such as engine, transmission, and a rifled 120mm gun on a domestic production line in order to produce a new tank.  If followed through, could have resulted in a British Abrams.  One might model it via a barrel change (use that from Challenger I expect) along with some other ancillary systems and marking.

New engine decking, grilles, etc. to indicate the engine change would be good, too. Steal the gunner's sights and maybe the commander's cupola as well?

Or, since the British replacement for the Chobham armour on the Abrams and Challenger 1 is supposed to be better, maybe do surgery to get the Challenger 2 turret onto the Abrams hull?

I would keep the turret since that was part of the proposal.  I would replace the gun though - remember that at this time, the M1 still would have had the 105mm (the 120mm not entering service with the M1A1 until the mid '80s) thus the "British Abrams" (might need a new name - any suggestions?) would have been the most powerful Abrams at the time and we may have even seen the M1A1 being based on it rather than using the German derived 120mm smoothbore.

Re the hull engine grills, I agree.  Maybe one could use the Abrams Diesel Engine proposal as a basis:

Perhaps name it after "Fighting Jack" Churchill (aka "Mad JacK" Churchill)?  'Twould fit right in after Chieftain and Challenger.  Note that this would continue the custom (tradition?) of naming after combat leaders.

I'm pretty sure everyone would assume it was named after that other Brit named Churchill, whoever he was....

Whilst certainly a character, I would argue against  "Mad JacK" Churchill as the basis for a new "Churchill" tanks on the basis that he (apparently) had very little to do with armoured vehicles during the war.  If anything, he would be a great basis for naming of a special forces or Commando vehicle.  Also, given the timing of this would have been the late '70s/early '80s, he would have still been alive and thus arguably less likely to have had something named after him.

That said, the name "Churchill" could still be a very valid one, but named after the other Churchill (aka Winston).  Given Margaret Thatcher would have been PM at the time and given the character of the time with heightened perception of the Soviet threat etc, naming after arguable Britain's most famous political leader (and another Conservative PM) and a wartime one at that, who was also instrumental in getting the tank into service and also had American heritage would seem proper.

Note that this would continue the custom (tradition?) of naming after combat leaders.

Also, this is not a British tradition. Well, sorta. Assuming the 'British Abrams' discussed here is actually in service with Brits, of course.

British tank naming tradition is simply to use the letter C for big tanks. The only time wartime leaders were used was for lend-lease tanks, which were named after US Civil War-era Generals (Grant, Lee, Stuart, Sherman), a system which the Americans adopted (as before this they didn't name their vehicles, only giving them designations (M3, M4A3E8, M26, etc).

Meanwhile, for British-designed and made tanks they almost always used cool-sounding words beginning with C. Cromwell, Comet, Covenantor, Churchill, Challenger, Chieftain, Centurion, Crusader, Cavalier, Centaur, Carnaervon, Charioteer, Conqueror, Conway and any others I've forgotten about. Vehicles made by Alvis had names beginning with 'S': Saladin, Saracen, Scorpion, Samson, Striker, Sultan, Samaritan, Scimitar, Sabre, Stormer, Spartan, Salamander and Stalwart. Vehicles made by Daimler were given names beginning with'F': Ferret and Fox.

A bit red for ground use, except in the North West coastal area.  The RAAF found it was too particular and stood out too much against a green background - which is what most  of Oz actually is.  I like it.  I have used it a couple of times on various aircraft but I don't really think it would suit a ground vehicle.

Personally I kinda have an interest in tracking this particular WIP...... because the builder claims that he is contracted to build this one as a promotional material for the US to sell more Abram tanks, with the ROC being one of the targeted customers (this round is on top of the 108 M1A2Ts already ordered)......

EDIT: As it turns out the model is for showing the moving parts only and isn't painted (https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=2970227969730284&id=384720694947704&__xts__%5B0%5D=68.ARCWuqV-Dlnc9NeYpMAJv1XOJurBzfiepdbAi0L091CT3GFF2eOzR8Cyc2U81R_zgrlynuC6wQsF7p89qULpnzqeQRDONUnaiVvlMJNrCdKgBq0esjXAQxEiBVYHXPTG2ERbIA1fqLwingnuPDUdz8fXNleGxG2DAQYP-PyD-Mc_y5XwDfIbUJXxeGW1KOQ8JDkSHNZBgqGaKxguzg5AiLAG965T-u9GZwCPtss37kOr0di9THT2iZp2u2XXZ09Uq7REtyfv9vzwGrrVphHHMqhR4Qllk-niD4M8Eyx0pG4hFuW1L2z48ri5anyjtBcwSTzcl-evBUydGRSjRXzkL2_uaQ&__tn__=-R).

Interestingly, this was kind of investigated in the real world with the M256E1:  To improve the lethality of the M1A2 main battle tank, the US Army funded the Advanced Tank Armament System (ATAS) research project to integrate a longer gun tube.  The long tube is based on the German Rh-120 L55 tube, made by Rheinmetall, and is 1.3 m longer than the conventional M256 120 mm gun tube.

Not sure if this is real or not:  Supposedly Australian M1 Abrams based AGDS proposed by engineer James Michael O'Dwyer with over two hundred of Metal Storm stacked 40 mm projectiles:

Please make it real  ;)

Metal Storm is a great technology. Metal Storm as an Anti Missile/Aircraft system has a lot of mentions in the "Birmoverse" series of books Weapons of Choice in a near/alt future setting
