What a wonderful kit !! I'm going to use it to detail my Encore kit of this beautiful aircraft. One thing you didn't mention is who made this kit ? I've got some excellent decals with my kit if you are intrested I can give you some. My kit came with extra decals if you didn't want to do the options listed. HMU if your interested in what I have.
-
Another model where I was not aware of kit or airplane. More must be out there.
Appreciate your documentation and like Lili.
-
Great to see another project going so fast since your last! :)
-
Hi Lili! ;)
Getting comfortable to watch this one... ;)

The kit is by Icaerodesign, listed in the thread subject line.

Is it just me or does Lili become more fetching with each new build?
Looks like a great kit, Chuk and it's going to be a lot of fun following along as you put it together!

Thanks for the link,Greg. I've never heard of them but I've bookmarked them now. That looks like an amazing kit. I can't wait to check them out... !!!
-
Interesting... :)
-
Ive actually been quite excited for you to start with this build !!
Roll on !!
-
Thank you, my friends! I've been on the road, but I'm back (made it through those storms in Illinois!) and will have more up this weekend. The cockpit detail is great, but I'm wiring the whole thing- and adding a few tiny assemblies here and there.
Cheers!
chuk
-
When you say wiring ? For lights etc ?
-
I'd guess cockpit instrument wiring &, possibly, cabling &, given what I've seen of Chuk's work, once he's finished you wont be able to tell the difference between (B&W) photo's of his cockpit & the real thing.
:)

Just getting myself comfortable so I can just sit back and watch another masterpiece created for our viewing pleasure, oh yeah!, hello again Lilli! :-*
-
The Wombat knows, altough he is too kind to a scribbler like me! Take a look at the kits parts and you'll see that all the little cockpit accessories are there, but not connected. I'm following the excellent drawings in Radu's book to add the electrical and tbing connectors. The circuit breaker panel needed a real bundle- I'll post pics Sunday eveing.
Again- my thanks to all!!
-
If you're a scribbler, then I'm still chewing on the crayons rather than putting them to paper! ;)

On the the occasion of the Romanian National Holiday I introduce a new friend, and some somewhat neurotic detailing. Lecotenent Margo with explain everything!

Strewth! That's INCREDIBLE! :o :)

You (and your assistants) never fail to impress.

Youve been busy chuck ! :D

That is amazing, Chuk!
Love the new assistant, too!

My warmest thanks, guys! The next focus will be on the seat and floor- several details to be added there. This aircraft was a product of the "stick it wherever it fits" design school. As new features were invented, they got jammed in somewhere the pilot could reach 'em! One choice looming before me: do I rebuild the kit PE instrument panel? It's not correct- but would look fine as is. I'm leaning toward fabricating a new one- we'll see.
Cheers!

Some things never go out of fashion ;D Cool uniform detail on your girl, and I finally get what you mean when you talk about 3D over the flatter PE provided parts after seeing that bracket!
-
I always look forward to seeing new post from you sir! great work :) :-*
-
Thanks, gents! I present my last post for 2013- hooray! I've really gotten absorbed into the details of the cockpit- such a challenge not only to build, but to learn about all the various sub-systems and widgets. You'll also note that I've replace my "artistic' chicken-scratch with actual typography- I hope it suits you.
The lovely Marina will be your guide- cheers- and a happy New Year to one and all!

Nice work on the plane too mate...

What plane?? Oh yeah! Ummm ..... nice work mate and the plane, excellent scratching, those Albion Alloys tubes are indispensable! 8)
-
That's ASTONISHING, and I mean the model IAR 81C as well as Marina...... ;)
-
Impressive work as always Chuck !
Although i kinda liked the "chicken scratch" writing style... I thought it looked perfectly in place of your cartoon style of presentation :)

Ye Gods! The boy's waxing all lyrical! :icon_surprised:
But he got it right! ;)
I miss the old script, it felt somehow more personal than the type script, but I guess some viewers may have had readability issues. ::)
:icon_music:
Guy
-
I'm with the Aged Marsupial Herbivore on the old script. But, with a build like this, who would complain :)
-
Ive been wanting to try that Zen. Lighting technique (just makes sense to say it like that) since I saw it on your Junkers build, Thanks as always for the helpful tips :)
-
what do you do with the finished models when they are done? sell , donate , give away?place on well kept shelf ? your work is to fantastic to be kept hidden away
-
Your detail work is sheer poetry to me, too, chuk!
Not only is your "assistant" easy on the eyes, but she's got an eye for talent too!
Brian da Basher
-
Thanks, everybody- much appreciated! I hope to finish the new IP's and install 'em this weekend.
Arkon- I used to display my builds at the now-lamented Military Shop in Long Beach, CA- but now I keep 'em safe in a glass case in my studio. Mine all mine! ;)
-
Would love to see photos of some of your earlier creations.
-
Here's most of my stuff, where I've been (extremely) kindly given a subforum: http://www.modelersalliance.com/forum/chukw (http://www.modelersalliance.com/forum/chukw)
-
Well, naturally, I had to have a look at the 'Egg of the ApeDog' first....and when I have an afternoon to spare, I'll go thorugh the
388 thread :)
The IAR is coming along nicely - I liked the old style lettering better, but I can see (nyuknyuk) the reason for the change.
-
Great build, I have to say your style of illustrating your progress is really refreshing!
Alvis 3.1
-
Just been through your Ju-388 build, jaw droppingly amazing, you are an artist in 3 dimensions!!!! I'll be saving lots of your pages as "how to .... " guides!!! 8) 8)
Can't wait for more of your IAR-81C sculpting (build seems so clunky a word for wot U doo!!) 8)
-
Thanks, guys- you are so kind!
I've run through some rough patches on this build- but perseverance pays off. Not even a vamp like Magda can trip me up!

Oh Magda ....... :-*
Every installment is like a modelling 'how to', keep up the amazing work!! ;)
-
Wow what a fantastic update! Your detail work is mind-boggling and up there with the greats, Chuk!
I totally understand about bad things happening while modeling. Unfortunately, my bad modeling muse looks more like Margaret Hamilton than the fetching Magda.
Brian da Basher
-
I'm surprised you get ANY modelling done with Magda hanging around the place! :D :) ;)
-
The sad fact is, being and Australian, that's not what I think of when someone say Magda, now Dorota on the other hand recalls much nicer images.
-
My modelling always seems to be a bad day! (It may have something to do with my lack of skills & exasperating impatience.)
Yet, sometimes, something worthy of not smashing results.
However, nothing comes close to your builds, Chuk! Not sure they're even on the same planet.

You guys are way too kind to hit-and-run feller like me! Pardon my absence- Things have been cookin'!

Thanks, fellas!
Well, it's been a while- we've been dealing with personal issues, some good, some not so good. We had our twenty-fifth wedding anniversary- good! My brother-in-law's 60th birthday- good! Some dear family members in ill health- definitely not so good. My wife and I are hanging in there- think good thoughts for our mothers if you feel so inclined- thanks! In the meantime, I have been stealing a moment here and there at the bench, and having fun with this elegant little project.

Thanks, everyone! Glad you like it- it's been nice to have a bit of bench time, as things have been kinda distracting. Next up: more rescribing and riveting- hurray, working out the rear collector ring, engine mount and a small, oval flange around the opening in the firewall. I just might leave the bottom cowl off as well, with this engine beinmg such a nice addition to the kit! :0
Cheers-

You don't want to get too chummy with these Romanian ladies. Hannah and Fritzi could get jealous and have your guts for garters, or worse. Beautiful craftsmanship on the fighter plane. Your ladies in uniform look the business. You give Romain Hugault a run for his money in my book.
Adios, Larry.

It's been a while, and with reason. It's been a tough summer for my wife and I- we each lost our mothers in the space of seven weeks. Nothing was unexpected, but that did not make anything easier. To top it off, I've been struggling with health problems- but I have hopes that all will resolve without dire consequence. All in all, though- it's been a rough ride- and I appreciate your patience. This update is a bit compressed, detail-wise.
Cheers!

Beautiful!! And I'll agree, Radu Brinzan's drawings are incredible (having read his book on this subject, I wondered if you were using it - and you clearly are).
My sympathies on the rough summer for you and your wife and I hope your health improves.

As always, exemplary work mate!!! 8) 8)

For a small update that is quite impressive! :)
The book is on my "To Do List (Short Term). ;)
So, that's what a Master Modeller looks like! :o
;D
-
Placed my book order!! and I just read this and become a master modeler and artists with amazing patience right? ;)
Congrats on the book! Super cool, something I dream of doing, all i need is some talent ;D
Awesome update! nice fix on those struts, made that look easy
-
I think your female Romanian officer is in her "undress greens" uniform. Nice work on your airplane. I just ordered a copy of your book this morning. I will be watching my mailbox. Adios, Larry.
-
My copy of your book was waiting for me yesterday night when I returned from the Sikorsky S-97 Raider rollout in Florida. Amazing work!
-
Thanks, guys- you are, as ever, too kind! It has been a rough ride, and just lately gotten a bit rougher. My department at work was dissolved- all 5 of us laid off. After 14 years, without warning. The current American business model sucks! The odd thing is, as they cut the dept to go on a freelance model, I'll be working for the company freelance, at a higher rate, on an irregular basis. go figure!
Thanks for your orders, men! You will not be disappointed! CammNut, I hope you liked your sketch- I've been having a lot of fun spending some time on these little doodles. I've been tempted to post a collection of 'em- anyone want to see? I'll leave the names of the owners off, of course. More book going out in the next few days!
As for the IAR- I've fabricated the bomb crutch mounts and bomb sway braces, etc. Late production fighters were equipped as dive bombers, but rarely used as such. The Stuka-esque swinging bomb crutch was removed but the rest retained. I've taken some pics of my resistance soldering gear and how I use it- pics of this and more to come.

Chukw, You have more talent in your little finger than I have in both ham fists.
I recommend purchasing this book with enthusiasm and no reservations.

The guy fixes f@*#-ups with more skill than I use on an entire model! :o
It's unnerving! :icon_crap:
-
Pay attention, FAAMAN- your mind is wandering! ;)
Oh, Wombat, maybe if I made less farkups I'd have more built models! 8)
While unemployment sucks, it has given me more time for fussing with this tiny little fighter. I've gotten out my Big Hammer and nailed down some nasty loose ends- and shot some paint at last!

WOW! :D
Seconded.
Even your f@*#-ups have style, mate. ;)
Hello, Margot! :P

Do you have any useful tips about Vallejo Primer? I have a lot of problems with adhesion of this primer. Do you clean your models with f.ex soap before priming? I always have trouble with paint which peels, usually with primer.
-
Thanks, friends! Artoor, the primer sprays easily- simply wait 24 hours so it can harden fully. I do wipe my model down with rubbing alcohol before spraying any paint. Best of luck to you!
As a member of the Great Unemployed, I've had extra time to work on this project- carry on, Lili!

Superb as always mate, every installment is a learning experience for us mere mortals ............ ;D
-
Thanks, FAAMAN!
Well, I've had a lot of bench time, and Had some serious back and forth with this build! One thing I did realize was that I left poor Radu Brinzan out in the cold after he was nice enough to send me a set of his IAR 81C decals. What a dope I am! I did use them instead of the kit decals (which do look very nice, BTW) They were a treat to apply- judge for yourself.
I won't go into the issues with dullcoat blushing and bad material interactions, but it's all coming out in th wash. I had so many pics in my camera that i'm breaking it into two installments- here's Doging Bullets, Part 1-

:) :) :) Superb as usual WOW ;D ;D ;D
-
Yup! :)
-
Really coming along well.
I love watching your work, its the sort of stuff I fantasize about being able to do but lack the bravery (and talent) to do so.
-
That's some of the best detailing and weathering I've ever seen!
The engine is especially nice. Having spent time working for a bunch of mechanics, I can state with some authority you captured the very essence of a motor with some miles on it.
Thanks for the update, Chuk!

Well, this one's done at last. Like every build, this has been a real learning experience for me, and I hope I've been successful in sharing what I've picked up through the highs and lows. Thanks to all for reading along!

An absolute tour-de-force, Chuk!
I've always had a soft-spot for the IAR 81, and it's a treat to see one being built so superbly!

Chuk, words fail me. Thank you for putting so much effort into taking us through the build and your techniques.

Many thanks, my friends! I'm glad you liked it- I'm glad it's over at last! ;)
Now, for my next project I'll be finishing up one from my Shelf of Doom: http://www.modelersalliance.com/forum/chukw/147831-well-provisioned-lil-chuk-builds-some-targets (http://www.modelersalliance.com/forum/chukw/147831-well-provisioned-lil-chuk-builds-some-targets)

I was digging through a box of WIPs I haven't opened in years and found an F-4J(UK) almost complete and and F-4S at about 30%, amongst other things. The J just needs final paint, under carriage and ordinance.
Give me another decade or two and I might get it finished. :(
