E-7 was a nice try, but as this, the XFV-12A, and the XV-4A proved, ejector nozzles just don't work at full scale.  XV-4A was reworked as the XV-4B with a battery of J85 lift engines instead of the ejector system and the XFV-12A never flew vertically under its own power (not sure if it ever flew under its own power(.
