Axis of Time - HMS Trident Trimaran Stealth Destroyer - Finished
« on: September 21, 2013, 04:03:30 PM »
Love the John Birmingham Axis of Time Trilogy books.. alternate future whiffer fodder galore.
Previously done a couple of other models based on craft in those books.. time for my favourite Ship
HMS Trident - Trimaran Stealth  Destroyer.
So armed with a cheapo 1/700 ship from a swap and sell as the main hull basis.. away we go

The ship is described as havinga sleek superstructure so a bit of card bashing. A couple of $8 1/1250 ships had to be sacrificed as well.. because.. I am lazy and I want full hulls as the book describes it having three engines to give it the 100 knot speed it can achieve.

Working on the hangars.. gotta have choppers.

Anybody have a 1/700 Merlin Helo ?

So this may be either a quick build or a shelf queen as it is my first ship major conversion/scratchbuild.

Looking good so far, though I thought HMS Trident had NH-90 helicopters and not Merlins?
I have the other two books, Designated targets & Final impact but not the first one, so I have a question, does Weapons of choice describe HMS Trident (apart from being a trimaran)?
Length,beam,armament,etc?
IF it does could you put the description on here, as I would like to try and do a profile of her

Thanks in advance,

Ken

Ken, probably right on the Helo's.. it was a throwaway line, as the kit I have has Oceanhawks.
As far as an outright technical description, I cannot recall it, but I am doing a quick rescan of the book to find out more about deck layout.
In fact you will probably find that by the time this is finished will probably be somewhat different in structure and layout.
Pretty much I am making this up as I go along using snippets in the book to give some hints every now an again.

There is someones version of the Trident on the Quiet Room wiki

I am looking to create something like this

with a bit of this

Slight off topic:  interestingly, there is a trimaran serving in Australian service right now (and has been since 2007):

Looking great so far!  :)

Have a look at THIS ISSUE of Popular Mechanics on Google Books. From page 72 onward there's an article on trimaran warships.
Cheers,

They are excellent books Buzz, I've only read the first two and it had my thoughts racing in the Whiff direction. Great subject you've chosen, the Trident will be something else to see!! 8)

Maybe the Japanese stealth destroyer needs some research ................ ?

The Australian Customs Service contracted the RV Triton in 2007 from her owners Gardline, now named ACV Triton. Here's the Wiki entry,    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RV_Triton

Ok.. I admit I have been slack :)
So a small update.

I have added some ApoxySculpt to the Fo'ard areas for streamlining and what not plus some form to the hull shape.
Hopefully get some more done this coming weekend
Cheers Brian T

Filled in & faired in nicely.  :)   As first ship major conversion/scratchbuild, may be looking better than is permitted.
You know how it is with government Standards Of Building (SOB) regulations.
Looked up ApoxySculpt and Apoxie Sculpt.  Like to try some.
Thanks for posting picture.

Again.. thanks all.

Next update. Whilst I am tinkering with hulls and filling, sanding, repeat.. I am working on the base.
So my plan is to use some Gel Medium for the sea base.. because I reckon, ships on stands just look stoopid.
So first up mask out wheer the ship will be and cut that out

Ship test plonking.. some work has also been done on the for'ard deck missile bays as well.. woo hoo.. progress

Yes coming along.. small update. But small update is better than no update  >:(
Ok.. I have fitted some etch (uurgghh! and I though 1/35 was tiny) for sensor arrays and some of the railing and doors.
Then some detail parts like the metal storm turrets in the outriggers and Laser packs, which still need to be detailed a bit.

So next is probably painting stage and fitting stuff like the last of the railings, which I am slavishly following a good tutorial on a shipmodellers site due to not having done this sort of thing before at this scale.
And may never do again ;)

Sounds interesting!  :) Do you have a link? Got a couple of ships planned and it might come in handy (ship noob as well)....
