A Steam powered submarine.. what could possibly go wrong
I am working on the Mikro-Mir 1/350 British K Class Submarine.
It was a pre WW1 design, steam powered to be able to keep up with the grand fleet, scout ahead submerge and hit the enemy. Well that is the theory.
A bit too revolutionary as nearly all crew losses were due to accidents.
They are worth a read about.
Anyhoo.. the Mikro-Mir Kit is a treat
it is a big submarine and a fair size model even at 1/350 scale
My plan is to do the boat up as K-4, its most famous early exploit being this. Run aground and beached on Whatney Island off the coast of the UK soon after her launch in 1917.
Now there is a L & D report
She was eventually lost with all hands in November 1917 after a collision with her sisters K6 and K7. No wonder this class was known as the "Kalamity Klass"
So now after all the work put into replacing the wireless masts with brass tube, another look at the reference pic and off they come.. Sheesh !
Got a few other Mikro Mirs in the stash for the near future, they have a great range of uncommon submarine types.
The M3 14" gun sub, actually build on a K-Class hull, HMS Meteorite research sub and a rather neat 1/35 HL Hunley Confederate submersible from 1864
