Panda Cougar JERRV

Next project: Panda Cougar JERRV in my favourite 1/35 scale.

A JERRV (Joint EOD Rapid Response Vehicleor Joint Engineering Rapid Response Vehicle) is any vehicle that United States military engineers and Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) units use in war zones such as Iraq. In this case based on the 6x6 Cougar built by Force Protection Inc. In 2004, the new Cougar was designed by a small British-led team in the US at Force Protection, Inc., in response to an urgent requirement by the US Marine Corps. This was a new design, developed in the US, based on an evolution of vehicle mine-protection technology used by the South African Army and Rhodesian Security Forces since the 1970s. The very first sketches of the new vehicle were made in late March 2004 in response to those initial USMC inquiries. The rapid development and production that followed was based upon the USMC request that the first vehicle be delivered within 6 months of an order - which was subsequently placed in mid-April 2004 for 27 units.

Back to the kit: there is an awful lot of plastic in the box

Some of you may recall my early comments on the Panda M-ATV. The under carriage was a nightmare, but it still built into a lovely vehicle which is why I decided to risk another Panda kit. Glad I did too: it's so much easier to assemble. 2 good evenings at the bench have got the undercarriage completed

There are some small draws and more than a few bits of excess glue in trying to get it all together but overall I'm happy with it.

Now to start on the interior....

Latest lesson learned: pay attention to the instructions. There are two interior bases in the box and of course I used the wrong one. Thankfully hadn't attached too much stuff but did lose one of the pedals taking the front plate off

And well recovered now:

The gunners pedestal has 13 parts!

But actually goes together very nicely....

In really liking this kit. 😀

From the size of the Tamiya bottle in the background, it looks like a smaller kit than I had expected.

Hmmm...as a alternative (in line with the Non-Military GB currently underway), one might use this kit as the basis for a Paris-Dakar Rally style vehicle:

There is a reasonable amount according to the instructions Kerick: fire extinguishers, 2 monitors both for the front passenger, 1 radio only in the rack and a few little doo-dahs here and there. It also comes with a Talon robot which is actually the AFV Club kit.

But that would never be enough for me. It needs another monitor at least for the Talon operator in the back. With all the aerials I'll have to put a lot more radio gear inside. And I'll fill it up with boxes, backpacks, ammo cans, Pelican cases and anything else I can find lying around. It has to "look busy" :)

Scratch-built joy-stick for the Talon operator and resin monitor from Blast models

Had to add a back to the radio rack as it will be visible through the windows and the kit supplied radios are just a front face. It's all hollow behind.

The scrapes on the side of the dashboard, screen support, radio rack, seat and cooler are all from trying to fit the top hull half on. It would be OK as all those parts will not be visible but fitting the top on is not going easy.
The radio rack and explosives cabinet both catch on bolt heads on the interior walls. The air-con unit on the back is positioned too low for the bench that is below it. The top of the dashboard catches the underside of the window frame. Lots of clean-up needed

Thanks Brian, but recently it's not going so well

In fact it is driving me insane. Top is on but not very well and I broke off so many bits doing it....

Fit at front and rear are OK

But the sides are a mess. Left side has a small gap from the door back, which could easily be filled, but a much bigger gap along the hood

Right side has a large gap the entire length.

With a lot of glue and some serious pressure I might be able to reduce this a bit. And all of this after a lot of sanding, cutting etc. Anyway left & front are already glued so it's not coming off again.

If I were to do one again I'd not put the bins, bumpers or suspension in until after the two hull halves were closed up.

Wow that gap certainly is challenging.

Given your incredible work so far, I'm sure your approach to it is best. If it was mine, I'd try filling it with Tamiya putty and smoothing it out. Once given a nice coat of dark OD, it might actually pass for a weld seam. All my fixes are horribly cave-man.

I've no doubt you'll overcome this with style!

If the top is still loose - you can run a pencil (or a slow drying marker) along all the surfaces that my be hitting the top, then force the top down and see where there's a mark. Remove the excess material and repeat. It's like what dentists do to check your bite.

Thanks Gents. At the last point it was attached front, right and rear so was not coming off. First step was copious amounts of glue and pressure down the left side. Then styrene strips the liquid green stuff followed by more sanding and while not the neatest job, but it will at least let me finish it. Lots of repairs needed after the struggle of getting the two halves together.

It was worth stepping back for a week.

So for anyone else attempting a Panda Cougar start with the inside and get the body halves attached before doing the suspension, fenders, bins, lift rings, steps....basically anything on the outside. And constantly dry-fit....sand, cut, file, dry-fit again, repeat....

The front windscreen in incompletely cast. One side is missing ant these stand out from the hull.

How it should be:

The other side:

And after repairs ready for painting:

The controls for rotating the turret were not very well thought out. OK if leaving hatch closed but will need filling with open hatch. Pity I didn't spot it before assembly

So the struggle continues.....stay tuned for further updates

Are you using acrylics?
If so, are you using a compressor or a can of air?
If a can of air, there's your problem - the propellant can be oily.
else, the surface of the model is oily.

If you're using enamels, and a compressor, then you should check the water trap (or you should have a water trap on the compressor).

I paint with acrylics, because it's easier to undo my inevitable mistakes with denatured alcohol (methylated spirits).
My main acrylic paint is Vallejo; their paints cover well and are relatively inexpensive. The downside is that they're delicate, even after they're dry. Vallejo makes several polyurethane primers, but they can be finicky. Other acrylics that I use are Tamiya and Testor's Acryl.

The best primers I've found so far (as good or better than the gold standard, Mr. Durfacer) are the Badger Stynylrez primers. They're acrylic, but dry quickly and produce a flat, hard surface that conforms to fine details. Acrylic paints stick to it well.

No, hasn't been near Detroit or inner-city Dublin :)

I used Mig acrylic and a compressor without priming. But using Mig acrylic primer on the gun tub was even worse. I have since cleaned up the gun tub and restarted with "Ultimate" primer which went down perfectly. Not sure if its the different brand or the fact I had to clean off the old primer cleaned the plastic of any residue also. Have also sanded the orange peel and will re-spray tonight. Funny part is the orange-peel is in a mix of spots....some where it would have got lots of handling during construction and some where it would barely have been touched. It's just going to take a bit of getting used to this airbrush Mullarkey :)

So far I only airbrush my colour coats, primers come from the good-ol' rattlers.

Best results, to date, are with Tamiya grey primer out of the rattle-can.

The Tamiya white is a bit iffy, as it sometimes goes on like yours did, although I have recently noticed that by making 3 or 4 long-range passes with the can leaves a very fine, fairly even coat which seems to be suitable for most enamel/acrylic paints to adhere to & which gives a good base for closer passes of white primer to adhere to, if a solid white base coat is required.

I'm with my ol' Wombat friend in that I too use Tamiya grey primer out of a rattle-can. Easy to use, goes on well and is an excellent base for further acrylic top coats using my airbrush - a tad expensive but does such a good job that it's worth it in the long run.

Sometimes. ::)

Mostly I forget. :-[

But my worst case with Tamiya white occurred on a thoroughly washed model :o (because it was oily to the touch & there was even some slight damage to the kit from the release agent), although I didn't wipe it down with methylated spirits after washing, which I've heard is a good thing to do.

How does the robot get out of the back?

Probably a ramp though if you look at the specs for robots such as that shown you may be surprised what they can do.

Alternatively, it might just be lifted (carefully by two people) if it is a smaller one such as the Vanguard.

All hail the God of Frustration!!!

You can't outrun Death forever.

It would normally be folded up inside. There is a carrying handle at each end and it can be lifted by two men. Or one very strong man....
It's just hand keep it there until I build a diorama some year
