F-106X? Or the proposed "VF-106" priority-passenger/cargo transport?

A quick update. The model is basically assembled. Getting ready to put some paint on it.

Ed are you hiding the nose on purpose?  Looking good so far :)

My guess is he's going for a nose sized to take the radar and FCS from an F-12.

In the late 60's, the USAF needed to replace the F-100's of the Thunderbirds. The Chief of Staff knew that the Navy was changing to the Phantom for the Blue Angels.  He basically told his staff that the Air Force was not going to copy the Navy and would absolutely not use the Phantom.  Besides,  it was a Navy design and he wanted a real Air Force airplane.  So after trials with several different types,  they selected the F-106.

Nice job! I never thought of the 106 in that color scheme, but it really works.

Looks really good in that colour scheme - bet you had fun masking it!  :)

Congratulations Ed, you really surprised me with this variation on the F-106.  It certainly looks right and makes you wonder why it was never done in real life.  Save for the fact that the F-106 was procured in limited numbers and was a dedicated interceptor to the Air-Defense Command.  If it had been part of the Tactical Air Command it might have come to pass that a Thunderbirds F-106 would have flown.  An aircraft that large doing aerobatics at high speed would have been something to see.  I guess we have to settle for our vivid imaginations and your fine example of what could have been the ultimate Thunderbird mount.

Nice, Ed.  It reminds me of the F-106 from our local unit that was specially painted for the Bicentennial in '76.  Even the underside was red and white striped like the flag.

Closest they came to the Thunderbirds scheme in real life.

Cheers,

Logan

Living in Tacoma area, I saw both the F-102 and F-106 flying in-out of McCord AFB.
Your slendid paint scheme would be a WOW on either at a Thunderbirds air show.  :)
