USS Long Beach CGN-9

Sickening, weakening
Don't let another somber pariah consume your soul
You need strengthening, toughening
It takes a bit of dark to rekindle the fire burning in you
Ignite the fire within you

I ran late on the last Floaty GB but, to inspire others, this is what I built.

Here is the relief/hospital ship I built a while ago. WW2 aircraft carrier in 1/1200 scale IIRC. Tiny but a fun build. Perhaps something in 1/600+/-.

Very very very late start but here it goes.

Trying to think of a realistic alt history scenario that would see the RN operating either ex USN carriers, or buying new build US carriers from the late 60s early 70s.  The only way I can see this happening is something very big happens in the late 60s or early 70s that reverses the decision to get out of fixed wing carrier operation but after it is too late to restart a UK design and build program.

The end point I desire is UK participation in the Nimitz class build, with an RN version of the Virginia Class CGN with Sea Dart and Mk8 4.5" guns to escort the two or three resulting CVNs.  So what I need is a situation dire enough and urgent enough to see the UK buying US built ships, adapted to RN requirements, instead of going it alone, but not so urgent that the US would be unwilling or unable to help.  It also needs to be a situation where the obvious, in fact the only realistic solution is the revitalisation of the RN FAA.

The rest of the RN would remain basically the same, i.e. Invincibles, Type 42, 21, 22 and 23, there is still Sea Dart and Sea Wolf, Lynx and Sea Skua, probably still Sea Harrier as well.  The big difference is the carriers and their close escorts, paid for by a supplementary budget, justified by a specific threat or incident.  Perhaps something to do with the Five Power Defence Arrangements, maybe Indonesia's Communist Coup succeeds and they become a Soviet Client state, or perhaps the domino theory comes to pass and Thailand and the Philippines are overrun and Suharto's Indonesia joins the now Six Power Defence Arrangement, either way, changing events require the RN to maintain a carrier group East of Suez while still evolving and deploying the through deck cruisers in the Atlantic.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated and while I know this is the stuff of fantasy and is pretty much inconceivable in reality, what I am looking for is ideas for a back story for an anglicised Virgina I am about to start bashing as we speak.  For such a ship to exist it follows that the RN must have one or more CVNs for the type to escort and, while having sufficient time to adapt the design with UK systems, must not have had the time available to develop their own designs.

OK.

Let's assume Suharto and several other senior generals add to the death toll & the PKI, if not completely successful, tips the balance of power sufficiently for Sukarno to declare himself a Communist & to invite the Chinese into Indonesia as "advisors".

With Chinese assistance Communist Indonesia is sufficiently stable by 1968 to launch an attack against Malaysia in conjunction with the insurgency/uprising of the Malayan Communist Party.

During 1968 & into 1969 this conflict escalates into a Vietnam-style undeclared war, with the British pulled into a "Police Action" as the US is too busy in Vietnam post-Tet Offensive.

With Australia & New Zealand already tied up in Vietnam, too, & Canada not wanting to get involved in South East Asia the UK is on its own. It needs naval & air assets in the area but the Chinese have aircaft operating out of Indonesia & ships in the area, declaring a "Peace" zone around it. RAF units flown into Malaysia are bombed by Indonesian-marked aircraft on arrival & insurgent attacks make operation from Malaysian air bases unreliable. Operations from the Cocos (Keeling) Islands & Christmas Island are untenable due to their extreme proximity to Indonesia. The RN finally convinces the British Government that it doesn't have enough big carriers & the British Government asks the US for assistance in early 1969, to which the US responds by supplying 2 refurbished/modified Midway class carriers & several escorts & the promise of a Kitty Hawk & an Enterprise to follow (with the understanding that the British will re-activate their own carrier production to supply their own supercarriers by the late-70's/early-80's). Several escort ships are also to be provided to make up projected British construction short-falls.

The RN receives its Anglo-modified Kitty Hawk carrier in 1973, with a new-build "British" Enterprise being commissioned in 1976. The cost of this aid is to be reduced on the understanding that the RN will use these & their own carriers to police the Indian, & South Pacific Oceans, & their surrounds, in conjunction with the RAN.

How does that work for you? ???

Not bad, time to get this kit going.

The strategic situation required a reversal of the East of Suez policy but unfortunately the inertia of government meant damaging decisions had already been made with Victorious and Hermes transferred to the RAN in 1968 and 69 respectively, ironically due to the same concerns as the RN had but the Australian government acting more assertively, while Centaur was converted to a commando carrier.  This left only Ark Royal and Eagle, Ark undergoing her Phantomisation and Eagle still operating her Sea Vixen and Buccaneers.  The Phantomisation of Eagle was ordered and negotiations opened with the US for the transfer of a Midway Class carrier, the selected ship being Franklin D Roosevelt, which was then scheduled for a full SCB 101.68 as received by her sisters.

This worked quite well for the USN as disposing of Roosevelt to the UK permitted them to order a fourth Nimitz earlier than planned, they also made the RN aware through back channels that Midway or Coral Sea would be available for transfer should Ark Royals machinery issues make her life extension past 1980 impossible as feared.  This led to an interesting development as the increased production tempo of the Nimitz Class reduced costs and made the it possible for the RN to seriously investigate ordering the type as a replacement for Ark with an in service date of 1978.

The possibility of nuclear powered carriers mean that nuclear powered escorts had to be considered, impossibly expensive and time consuming to design and build in the UK it was decided that if a CVN was ordered then a DLGN would also be ordered from the United States.  The first RN modified Nimitz Class carrier was ordered in 1972 along with three modified Virginia Class DLGNs to replace the Tiger Class which were at the time being converted into Sea Dart and Ikara armed CGs.  The RNs evolving Carrier Squadrons would consist of a CVA, a Tiger Class CG, two County Class DLGs and four Leander Class frigates, the new "nuclear" squadron would have a CVN, a DLGN two Type 42 destroyers, two Type 22 frigates and a fast combat support ship.  To keep costs down the only British systems fitted to the carriers and DLGNs were those that could be integrated (basically substituted for US systems) without excessive changes to the design.

Now however I have been doing this instead of building, bugger, damn my tendency to procrastinate.
