A-12 Flying Dorito
« on: January 11, 2012, 09:16:17 PM »
...Or the Avenger II, if you're feeling official.

This is one of my favorite Whifs/NeverWas and will eventually be one of my projects - I'm planning to go with a lot of plasticard for the airframe and lots of parts from a donor Revellogram F-14 for the cockpit, landing gear/bays and possibly the intakes/exhausts as well. Oh, and I also plan to put in a rotary launcher for the things that go "boom".

Mine, of course, will be in USMC markings derived from one of the A-6 Intruder squadrons.

The more I hear about it, the more I think it'd need a drastically different contract to have a chance of succeeding.  As 'twas, there were enough technical and coordination problems (between GD and McAir) to ensure a rather problematic development.  The basic concept was/is sound but the implementation, from everything I've heard, was not well done.

You could, I imagine, use Anigrand's 1/72 kit as a reference for doing a 1/48 A-12.  Of course, much of the radar development was supposed to be covered under A-6F development/evolution and that also came up dead (between problems with P&W's second source building of the F404 and with Boeing's new wing, that's understandable).  I should not that it wasn't that the new wing wasn't good, it's just that it was sufficiently different from the original wing to cause fuselage structural problems.

How retro?

1930s, WWII, Korea or Vietnam?

Not sure.  I was originally thinking WWII but the '30s idea is attractive.

Did one in 144th using a b-58 hustler wing section, lots of styrene stock for inlets and exhausts and a discarded F-15 nose and landing gear. The result is a bit pointier than the pure isoceles triangle A-12, but it still looks pretty good and I wanted a higher speed whif version in any case (and that's the story I'm sticking to!). With a bit more care , you can hit the 45 degree sweep if you want to though.

When I start this one, I will definitely post pics, plus probably be screaming for help in trying to figure out what I'm doing wrong.

Russ, that's a great digi scheme on your Avenger! You are my flying wing inspiration/guru/hero.

Might be fun to guesstimate, from later published design efforts, the competing Northrop-Grumman design (from before they merged).  I suspect a cross between the diamond-shaped UCAV that appeared on another thread here and this cockpit would be a reasonable approximation; that or a similar cross with a X-47 or X-47B shape.

-chuckle-  That should be Dorito, the singular, rather than Doritos (as in a whole bag or handful of), the plural.  On the other hand, painted as an aircraft full of Doritos would be unique.

Or, in an attempt to reduce the deficit, DoD starts painting the underside of aircraft used in pre-game flyovers with the logos of sponsors/corporations, so the A-12 would fly looking like a bag of Doritos? I could see it happening...

With the injection moulded plastic kit coming soon the above moto image could become an affordable reality.

Many thanks again to GTX for buying the resin A-12 resin slab and making this a reality!  :)
