Finally got it into the paint shop. The shield is removable (so splinter protected or not) and just set upon the supports, which is why it looks cockeyed in some pics.

AIRFIX DAK MP-40 gunner (painted 30 years ago) hanging out to illustrate 18/20mm scale.

Good to see this project again and so close to being finished.  GoN was a great action film when I was a kid but as an adult with additional knowledge on the subject it lost a lot of its original appeal.
