Kawasaki Ki-10 - a One Wing Biplane - FINISHED
« on: April 11, 2020, 05:08:41 AM »

It's no good, I can't resist, I've had to start a few One Wing Biplanes . . .
Here's the Kawasaki Ki-10 fighter. It's from the Hasegawa double kit boxing. I was surprised when opening the box to find large 'Made in Ukraine' stickers on the sprue bags. Turns out this is just a Hasegawa re-box of the ICM kit . . .
Anyway, on with the job. I will be brief, just pointing out specifics, such as, in this kit, the propeller comes with separate hub and blades, unusual for 1/72 . . . here's the hub,

blades,

and assembled.

Here's the fuselage (and rudder ) assembled,

and lastly for now, the top wing split in half.

THat's All For Now, Stay Tuned . . .

cheers,
Robin.

Nice! The 'Perry' is a great choice for a one-winged biplane

Is promising to be another legit one wing biplane.

Okay . . . some progress,
the wings cut to size, roots trimmed to fit, and locating pins added, as there isn't much area for gluing,

wings and tail feathers attached,

and undercarriage legs added. Ready for painting already . . .   :o   ;D

Leaving the one wing off makes gives these planes a whole new look.

I think this one is going to be particularly successful, it already has that look . . .
I have a small problem, in that I don't have the 'correct' colour of paint to use, and obviously, my usual sources are closed up for the duration. I can get one mail order, but the shipping will be more than the cost of the paint, and I'm not sure that i would use it again after this build, anyway . . .   ???

Do you have the paints to mix your own? ???

I could certainly mix something close, but I really hate mixing paint unless I absolutely have to ! ( I used to be a litho printer, and mixing inks to match Pantone colours was a daily occurrance . . . )   >:D
I just realised I may have something suitable, if it hasn't turned to goop in the pot . . .

Kawasaki Ki-10-II Type 95 Fighter, 'Perry', 2nd Air Battalion, Manchuria, 1937, flown by Capt. Tateo Kato.

The windshield that came with the kit is meant to be cut and folded from a piece of acetate, and is very fiddly (I did try . . .), so I found a styrene one, and used that . . .   :o    :-[    :D

For some reason, I see that Perry single-wing-biplane as a mid-winged aircraft.

[intrusion]So here is a Kawasaki Ki-10 scrapping with a pair of Air Corps Boeing P-12 single-wing-biplanes over Corregidor Island. This was one of the first US engagements during the Second Sino-Japanese War. What became known as the Pacific War, began on 07 July 1937 when the military of the Empire of Japan struck simultaneously at the Republic of China and US forces on Luzon in the Phillipines.[/intrusion]

My comments for the P-12 apply here, too. 8)

Looking at images of the (real) aircraft I can see that the upper wing was well forward of the lower wing, which would give them the correct (gravity/lift) vector alignment.

May I suggest moving the lower/mono-plane wings further forward on later builds, to bring their wing spars (& Lift vector) into alignment with their CoG? ???

Moving the Centre of Pressure (Lift) aft relative to the Centre of Gravity actually increases stability, to a point, beyond which excessive nose heaviness becomes a problem, needing either large amounts of up elevator trim, causing drag, or weight in the tail, or both, to correct.
Of course, in reality, the aerodynamics on these planes is impossible, never mind the C of G issues, the wing area has been reduced by half, or more, however here in One Wing Biplane World, the laws of physics are, shall we say, rather more accommodating ?

Robin.

Don't consider it an intrusion . . .   :D
That picture is most excellent,
Now you've set me thinking, and as I mentioned at the top of this thread, there are TWO kits in the box . . .   ;)
I think it's the fairly deep fuselage, and smallish fin, that create the idea . . .

Robin.

... there are TWO kits in the box ...

Ah! So a polystyrene mid-winger is not out of the question?

I think you're right about the deepish fuselage and dainty fin ... all of which contributes to that period look.

Having thought further about this, I've got in mind a 'developed' version, mid-winged, larger tail feathers, maybe cleaned up undercarriage, enclosed cockpit ?, and used as a dive-bomber, rather than a fighter . . .

Nice! The canopy on the Kawasaki Ki-28 had a goofy cut-out above the pilot's head. Otherwise, it looks a bit like the canopy from the Ki-61 - Falcon vacuform canopy option?

Random thoughts: Build the mid-wing Ki-10 using the upper wing (leaving you a full set of Perry wings). Buy a Ki-61 kit to rob of its canopy for the mid-winger. Then, build the Ki-61 as an open-cockpit biplane  >:D

Believe it or not, the Ki-10 I've already built is fitted with the upper wing, so only lower wings left . . .   :-[
That Ki-28 is the sort of thing I'm thinking about, I will use the lower wings I have to make new tailplanes, and I have a spare fin and rudder off another kit. I will be building a OWB Gloster Gauntlet at some point in the future, so there's a spare canopy, just need some spats . . .

Very nice!!  So, when do we see a two-wing monoplane?  Perhaps a derivative of the P-26?

On further thought, what you've posted is in fact an Oblique flying wing, which doesn't have a fuselage as such, that 'appendage' is merely a wing tip mounted pod.
Thus, my original proposition is upheld and proven ! Q.E.D. !        ;D    ;D    :icon_vader:
