1/72 Gloster Gibraltar from a Classic Airfix kit
« on: July 05, 2013, 03:02:39 AM »
In the late 1930s, with the rise of Nazi Germany and fascist Italy, the Royal Navy decided to bolster their defense of Gibraltar.

They appointed a tough and staunchly traditional admiral to take charge and added to the Royal Navy bastion on the Rock.

However, air defense was a challenge. The good people at Gloster came up with a solution, a heavily-armed, wickedly maneuverable floatplane fighter, the Gibraltar.

While first seen by the Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm as just a "gussied up Gladiator", it was soon shown to be more than a mere re-tread. Heavily armed with six machine guns and powered by the Bristol Turkey double-row radial engine, the new aircraft would prove itself in the darkest days of the war.

A flight of three Gibraltars was off-loaded from the transport S.S. Dramamine in January, 1940 just in time to meet the Axis threat.

The Italians and Germans launched bombing raids against the British outpost which were beaten back time and time again in pitched air battles. The three scrappy floatplane fighters were so lauded the locals named them Replace, Nope and Disparity.

The Royal Navy knew the flight of Gibraltars was only a stop-gap, however, and dispatched the aircraft carrier HMS Hermes to relieve the enclave.

Unfortunately, the day before the carrier arrived, a mechanic forgot to close the canopies on the Gibraltars and they were swamped and sunk by accident by a passing merchantman.

The British managed to hold on to Gibraltar and today the small floatplane fighter is remembered as a symbol of the Royal Navy's stubborn determination.

A while ago I was sent a box of incomplete kits. One of them was the basis for this project.

Little did I know, but this was the first Airfix Gloster Gladiator kit.

The half-pilot sealed in plastic up to his armpits is a dead giveaway. Unfortunately, I decapitated mine before I realized its importance.

I had no idea but there are now three 1/72 Gladiator kits in the Airfix line. Very impressive.

Of course, I needed to replace the missing parts.

I had a spare Spitfire canopy, Val engine, Piper Cub stabs and anonymous floats in the parts bin. I ended out using a spare Wildcat prop instead of the one in the picture.

After a couple day's work, here's how it all looked.

I was able to use the kit's landing gear legs, but I had to cobble together the rest of the struts for the floats from more spare parts. It might be hard to see, but I also built a fairing for the little radiator from card stock.

One thing I really like about the famous Malta Gladiators is there seems to be no agreement on what they actually looked like. Here's a sample I put together of the veritable rainbow of color schemes just for them alone.

I just love how this leaves one free to offer up their own interpretation of the scheme. I decided to go with a subtle version which was brush painted by hand with Model Master acrylics, Primer Gray, Medium Gray and Dark Sea Gray mostly.

Decals are from the decal dungeon. The fin-flash is totally wrong, but I like how it looks. In my imagination, the Royal Navy misinterpreted the directive and then decided to keep it as a unique marking.

The model is rigged with steel guitar strings.

I had a lot of fun building my Gibraltar which took a little over two weeks and I hope you enjoyed it and the story of how it helped win the war.

That is a very good combination of parts that you have assembled into a rather fetching looking little float plane.  Congratulations on another winner !

The Piper Cub parts.  By chance the same parts I sent to you a few years ago from the Academy-Minicraft 1:48th scale Piper Cub kit?

Picture of bagged Airfix kit is a time trip.  Gave me for real 1960's flash.
Liking those Gibraltar building pics  :)
Wonderful conversion to a seaplane via your inovative touches.  Floats look like they belong there.

Love it - I have actually planned something similar (well, the model if not the story... ;))

Brilliant as always BdB. Axis aircraft over Malta might have taken an even worse drubbing had that Italian Farganesse-class submarine not sunk MV Promethazine as she carried the other three Gloster Gibralters to Valletta!  ;)

I'm really glad you guys liked this one. I had a lot of ideas for this kit, but nothing really clicked until I thought about adding the floats.

Mr Fontaine, you've got an eagle eye. Those are indeed the horiz. stabs. from the Cub kits you sent me a while back. I've been hoarding them like a miser and still have two left and a third that someone else sent me.
