Hallo dear friends...
First of all let me apologize for not being very present on our forum, but time for modeling is becoming shorter and shorter (as for many of you as well)...
In any case I just completed a WW1 Breguet XIV (http://beyondthesprues.com/Forum/index.php?topic=8265.0) after one year !!!
And now I want to take a "free tour" in my fantasy, inventing something.
But what?
I rummaged in my spare and found boxes and took out some pieces that I imagined together (without taking any dope :-O ).
Here is what I have found so far:
And here is a first "dry" assembly try.
Just to let you understand the pieces:
- the green one is the handle to manoeuver a kite
- the yellow bars are teeth cleaner holders
- the reddish engine is from some destroyed toy, I got it from someone I don't remember
- the pilot is a character I found in a parking near my car
- the white parts are from a dismissed remote control holder for the air conditioning in my office
- the metal part is from some technologic device I dismissed, I always keep parts and components when I dispose devices
OK I will show more as I proceed with this work. Now I should restore the pilot making a helmet, and giving him artificial limbs...
I am very excited about this work!
... but... what is it? I call it "The Thing" for the time being, maybe it could change its name while progressing on its completion...
Fellas, suggestions and ideas are needed and more than welcome!!!
Ciao!

Near Chicago in the American Midwest. It would be quite a trip. Maybe a trip to Italy someday.

Well that would be a quite long but interesting trip!
Should you someday be off to Southern Italy let me know so that I can show you around.

I am always a big fan of these unorthodox projects, so I will follow this one with a keen eye!
And the choice of a Genie to drive the Thing is...genial :)

I love this 'found object art' approach to modelling! Go

The pilot is especially intriguing. Looking forward to watching this one unfold.
-
Thank you kerick! I am curious as well to see what the future will bring!!!
@Apophenia: thanks for your support!

Keep thinking strange dune buggy like "thing". Waiting to see.
-
Thanks for the suggestion finsrin, I will keep it and it's very likely I will make it a desert vehicle.
By the way here are the progresses made today:
I made some sidewalls to the seat, dry fitted for the moment, they are not complete, there are some details I will put on after painting:
Then I concentrated on the forward cowling:
Interiors
(http://www.andonio.it/model/thething/thething009.jpg)
Front
(http://www.andonio.it/model/thething/thething013.jpg)
Belly
(http://www.andonio.it/model/thething/thething014.jpg)
Many details (Jerry cans, black grid on the front, center block inside) are still loose, they will be glued after being painted.
That's all by now, thanks for watching!
Antonio

Thanks Brian! I'm glad you like it!
Yesterday evening I had a short session at the workbench. I needed to understand how to set the wheels under the vehicle.
My first idea was to glue the yellow bars parallel to the ground but I found that the back wheels axle would have been too high with respect to the front wheels one.
So I decided to tilt the bars in this way:
The bars will be integral with each other through a cross shaft that will join them on the front edge (inside the seat)
Here is the way the back wheels will fit in the end:
In this way the front wheels will be aligned with the back ones approximately in this position.
I still need to study the piece that will go beneath the green framework through which the front axle will go:
That's all for today!
Thanks for watching!

Curious... ???
-
Very cool layout! And its great watching your thought processes during the build.
-
Thank you guys, yesterday evening I took just time to improve the piece between the engine and the back wheel axle. Nothing new worth to show yet.
Antonio
-
Wow the wheels look great!
Unbelievable how you took all these disparate objects and combined them.
Brian da Basher

Thank you Brian, I will post soon a new state of the model...
Meanwhile I wish everybody on this forum a Merry Merry Christmas...
For those down under maybe it's too late...
Antonio

Hallo Everybody,
Christmas greetings to you all and to your dears...
Here is a Christmas Day update on The Thing:
- Made a suspensions system (same as the back wheels) on the front wheels
(http://www.andonio.it/model/thething/thething020.jpg)
- Put a balancing suspension on the front end of the back wheels tilting beams
(http://www.andonio.it/model/thething/thething021.jpg)
- Some additional details (dark grey pieces)
an inspection window, a "battery" and two anchor points for a "seat chain" (more details will follow! ::) )
- I prepared the fuel tank and the exhaust tubes, with a rubber tube within which I inserted a copper wire to make it easier to shape
(http://www.andonio.it/model/thething/thething023.jpg)
- I had to separate the big engine in two sub assemblies to be able to paint it, I also put some metal rails to hold the fuel tank
(http://www.andonio.it/model/thething/thething026.jpg)
- then I decided to make some headlights, I found some transparent pieces on an old sprue and found they fit into two propeller heads from a former build. I found also a chrome plastic piece (a Porsche wheel disc of which you see the internal face here) for the main light.
I filled the gaps on the propeller head where the blades should be inserted and put a stem
(http://www.andonio.it/model/thething/thething029.jpg)
here the "glasses" are just dry fitted
(http://www.andonio.it/model/thething/thething031.jpg)
I built a framework to hold the lights over the head of the driver
(http://www.andonio.it/model/thething/thething030.jpg)
It's all for now, I hope to sit at the bench a bit longer today and tomorrow afternoon.
Ciao and thanks for watching!!!

Merry Christmas!
I love the air bag suspension system. I’ll be watching this one !
-
This is shaping up to be pretty damn awesome!
-
Thank you guys today it has been a very tiresome day, many relatives at our house, me and my wife were very busy in cooking and making things go straight, now we're satisfied but shattered!!!
:icon_sleep:
so no modeling... tomorrow perhaps! ;)
-
What can I say, that's gorgeous and inspiring work.

Hallo everybody,
first of all thanks for your interest and appreciation of this work!
Then here are a few photos showing some work made on the "cockpit".
I added a sort of motorbike handlebars, then I made a place where to put that metal hi tech system in front of the pilot.
In the end I built a rack that will host
- the instrument panel
- a Vickers machine gun
- ammunition tank for the MG
Here we go with the pics:

Your work is always amazing, but adding that alien driver delights me to no end!
Great stuff, Antonio!
Brian da Basher
-
The project is coming along really nice!
Have you thought about a name for the "Thing"?
-
More interesting by the day!
-
Thank you guys,
@Antonio: no I have no name in mind, I'm open to suggestions!!!
;)
-
Hallo friends,
a few new details here:
Ammunition case and empty belt box added (totally scratch built). Here you can see the Vickers MG in place.

You can never go wrong adding armament!
Excellent choice of armament too!
Brian da Basher

Thanks Brian, Mog and Finsrin!
This Vehicle is a No Limit Racer, classified in the same category my Gunilla http://beyondthesprues.com/Forum/index.php?topic=7175 (http://beyondthesprues.com/Forum/index.php?topic=7175) car was: it takes part to the NLCRA (No Limits Car Racing Association) competitions (races among any kind of terrestrial armed vehicle with 4 wheels or more).
It is actually a GDAT: Genius Driven Armed Tractor.
Yesterday I had another session on this:
I added a "floor" to the "cockpit"
In white you can see some strengthening details and pins to connect the two main pieces (the green one and the white one (not in the pic) on which the seat will be glued).
Here you can see the bottom side of the same sub assembly, I needed to block in some way the front wheels axles, so I used two SPAD VII undercarriage V shaped struts:
The right side one broke, so I glued a styrene piece to strengthen it.
Here are a few views of the vehicle with the 4 wheels on:

I am thinking to a couple of missile racks...
-
With active suspension.. nice touch.

Groovy stuff ;D

Thanks Buzb and AW, I made some minor improvements to the model, lack of time due to real life...
I hope to finish everything during next weekend and start painting and final assembling...
Thanks for your attention!

Hallo guys,
here is a fast report of the things I was able to work on this model since the beginning of the year:
As I said I was thinking to missile racks, here they are:
Hooks inserted into the side panels of the seat. They will hold a "safety chain"
The front wheels will have rostra (I think this is the name, please correct me if it is not) to damage the enemies
(http://www.andonio.it/model/thething/thething054.jpg)
The back wheels will have different rims, they were not able to find two of the same kind... ;)
I imagined a sort of steering mechanism...
...which is connected to the handlebars
(http://www.andonio.it/model/thething/thething058.jpg)
Here are some details added to the cockpit area
(http://www.andonio.it/model/thething/thething059.jpg)
2 PE panels with louvres, some tubing and other stuff.
I think next step will be the Primer, then painting and assembling...
After the model will be finished I will work on the driving Genius.
Ciao and thanks for watching.
-
Such creative madness! I love it!
-
It keeps getting better and better!
Love the working steering mechanism :)

Agree with both the above (even if the steering mechanism isn't working, it looks like it could)!

Engineering--Imagineering intensive.
How ta heck did you see "The Thing" hiding within all the pieces ?

How ta heck did you see "The Thing" hiding within all the pieces ?
To be honest I saw "the thing" when I put together the green piece and the two white ones. (see img below)
Obviously the other details came along searching my big scrap boxes, and they keep coming while I work on it.
@OW: thanks! Glad you like it!
At the moment I am painting the pieces and glueing the sub assemblies if the pieces are finished, nothing worth to be shown yet.

This keeps getting better.
Thanks Ed!
I am afraid I won't be able to close the build by tomorrow...
DUring the week is very difficult to me to sit at the bench.
If no extension is foreseen I would like to move my build to the "Phisycal Models" > "Land" thread... "Right Back Where We Started From" !
:-)
-
I'm sorry guys, I won't make it for tomorrow...
I succeeded in stealing some hours to real life, but not enough to make it ready for tomorrow!
Last weekend was totally taken by some heavy works at home...
There are an incredible number of pieces / sub assemblies that were glued, painted, wheathered and some decals went already on, I preferred not to "waste" time for the photos, there are still a few now to paint and wheather. I hope to glue everything during the weekend, I will take photos of all the pieces before then.
Then I will take care of the Pilot.
Sorry, it was exciting taking part in the GB and I am very happy with the other results I see here!
Antonio
-
There's always the annual "Clear Your Workbench" GB or the regular "Land" forums to finish it off in. ;)
-
Definitely go for Clear your Workbench, something this good deserves to be in competition !
Mog

Wow I'm sorry to hear this Antonio but I'm the U.S. poster-child for life getting in the way of modeling.

Thanks everybody for the kind support,
I would prefer to go back where I started from, the "Land" thread.
I am not definitely a GB-machine!
Thanks again and see you there!

Hallo Friends,
I have finished the THING yesterday night, it took all in all 85 days, which is not bad at all seen my average!!!

Thanks again for your interest and patience in following this build!!!!
Antonio

That's an amazing model, Antonio!
There's so many great details I could keep coming back again and again and probably always spot something new.
Absolutely delightful!
Brian da Basher
-
Great work. This one ended up a lot different than I expected at the beginning.
-
-
Thank you guys, I'm glad you liked, I had so much fun building it!
-
Awesome - just awesome! ;D
-
As Brian said.... and can study and restudy finding features. Picked up on clever use of hose clamps.
Amazed you conceptualized "The Thing" coming about from all these parts. 8)
-
 8)
-
Thanks again!
@finsrin : ... hose clamps ?
-
These struck me as partially filled in hose clamp material. But may be parts resembling hose clamps.
-
OK now I understand, they are PE parts from an old fret...
But your idea is indeed a good one to have panels with louvres...
;)
-
Hi guys, yesterday I had some time to work on the Genius Driver of the Thing.
Using sophisticated techniques of mechanical surgery I have installed some iron artificial legs and feet on the patient.
I also installed the first piece of upper limbs, then I stopped.
I decided to paint the figure and to glue it at its place before installing the forearms and the mechanical clamps he'll use as hands.
In this way it will be easier to connect the forearms to the handles on the handlebars.
At the end I'll put a helmet on his head and that will be the final act of this funny build.
This is the situation so far:
The small holes on the torso were there when I found this puppet in the parking near my car.
Now I ask you: how would you paint the skin of this non human driver?
I need to hear some ideas from you guys and then decide how to proceed...
Thanks for your collaboration in advance!!!!
Antonio
-
Brilliant build and the driver will cap it off. For the skin, since he's non-human, how about a non-human color like mauve or ochre if you want dark, or an electric blue, like the genie in Alladin]/I] if you want light.

That's a great idea Elmayerle, maybe a mix of mauve and white would give him a nice non-human shade... but also a shade of blue... thanks, now I have a direction to search in, will review all the colours I have...

This afternoon I will glue the Genius on the seat and put the forearms on, the end of it all will be to plase the helet and the "safety chain"...
Hopefully there will be new pictures by tonight
Thanks for watching
Antonio

I keep thinking all those little holes should be wired to something.
-
Thanks OW this is really a great idea, but now I have glued it on the seat and it's impossible to make any further operation, it's a pity!
Will post the photos in a few minutes...

That's completely and unabashedly delightful, Antonio!
I just love the hat and that devious look he's wearing.
One of my favorites of yours yet! I can't stop smiling. :D

Driver as wild-n-crazy as the whole contraption. 8)
Whoever is in driver seat drives much of character of The Thing.
-
One thing missing from this thread, Andonio, is a few full image pic's of The Thing with the Genius in situ.
-
This whole build is wonderfully insane!! You should enter it in an art show!

I'd love to see what would happen if you entered that beauty in an open category at a show!
It would get my vote for the blue ribbon, that's for sure!
Looks like you're moving from blue ribbons to the Blue Max. Very much looking forward to your next!

Thanks Brian, I appreciate again your appreciation!
Unfortunately I don't like contests and competitions, so I will only show The Thing to friends coming to visit us.
