Title: Vebian Buccaneer
Post by: Weaver on February 02, 2016, 07:08:05 PM
Some years ago I started a sci-fi project over on What If called the Corsair Hunter X4, so named because it was made from four Corsair fuselages and one Hunter. It's still unfinished, but it's way too advanced for this GB: http://www.whatifmodelers.com/index.php/topic,33599.0/highlight,corsair+hunter+x4.html (http://www.whatifmodelers.com/index.php/topic,33599.0/highlight,corsair+hunter+x4.html)

However, since a Corsair Hunter needs some corsairs to hunt, I also planned a second ship for which I only got as far as collecting the bits. This is to be a 'Vebian Buccaneer', Vebian because the alien pilots of both ships are actually VEB Plasticart helo pilots and Buccaneer because it will use some spare Matchbox Buccaneer parts.

The ship will be  LOOSELY based on this artwork by Robin Hiddon from the TTA handbook Spacewreck by Stuart Cowley:

The idea is that it's a 'junkyard dog' illegal mining vessel assembled from bits of others found in a floating spacecraft graveyard. Mine will be significantly different from the picture though, just keeping the idea of an open-ended, girder-braced spaceframe and high-mounted engines (in my case a cannibalised missile).

Parts list

Spaceframe : Dapol railways footbridge girders with plasticard panels
Engine : broken rechargeable torch
Engine supports : Scalextric ramp supports
Asteroid mining unit (under centre) : different broken rechargeable torch  :)
Ore containers : nutrition drink bottle caps
Weapons pod : charging base for the 2nd torch
Accomodation pod : possibly an old talc container but not 100% yet
Control pod/shuttle : Buccaneer bits plus an old ink stamper

Very little progress on this at the moment I'm afraid: life and other priorities have been getting in the way. However it should be possible to get something done soon!

I feel your pain on this one  :(

This one's dead for the moment folks. I put some of the bits together, had major second thoughts about various elements of it, and then lost the mojo in a fog of indecision. There's now zero chance of anything being done beofre the deadline: sorry.

IF an extension is granted (and I'm NOT asking for one personally) I might throw something easy together instead.

EDIT: just realised I'm talking complete carp here: the deadline is 31st March (I thought it was 1st March). However I'm still not going ahenad with this build. I want to do other things now, though I mght sneak a sci-fi- job in between them.

Still has potential. Give it a rest and try again.

Cheers folks. It's still on the list, just rather further down it....

I'm ill at the moment so that's wiped out any modelling for the last couple of weeks anyway... ::)

My wife just came home from a conference sick as a dog. Hope I don't get it.

Yeah, mine came after two model shows on two consecutive Sundays. Assuming this clears up, I'll be fit again just in time to catch another one at the next show in Early April.

I slept on the couch last night to keep away from the germs. Of course now my back hurts.

My biggest problem has been sleeping at all. Every time I lie down in a sleeping position that's natural to me, I start coughing after five minutes. I've 'slept' kneeling on the couch with my head on the top of the back cushions sometimes, but I'm lucky to get a couple of hours at a time.
