Title: Quickie WW1 British Gun Carrier.
Post by: uncle les on August 31, 2014, 04:32:48 PM
To showcase some new Eureka Miniatures 20mm (1/72) tank figures I whipped up something a little different from the usual Whippet, Tadpole or Mother..  It starts life as a rough 3D printout
(https://fbcdn-sphotos-h-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xfp1/v/t1.0-9/10626573_10204603042418264_6531632937060993284_n.jpg?oh=664117517f5c18710ee16d82b26b0d2a&oe=545D73F9&__gda__=1417499292_a6e9ad478d8ce25b1ceac978b8b19032)
Then it gets smoothed out and detailed in the usual way

Scratchbuilt an 18 pounder to sit in it.

You could really fool a lot of people with this magnificent self-propelled gun, Les!

The paintwork is especially nice and hit's that Great War look dead on!

You should enter this beauty in the Great War GB! (http://beyondthesprues.com/Forum/index.php?board=54.0)

Les was stupidly referring to the initial 3d print texture.. oh well that line fell flat.

The gun carrier has been on my "one of these days" 1/35 list  from Panzershop for a number years.
For when you get around to it in 1/35
Panzershop 1/35 Gun Carrier (http://www.panzershop.cz/inshop/scripts/big_picture.asp?img=../pictures/store/PS35C145.jpg&ItemID=3637&name=Gun%20Carrier%20Mark.I%20w%2F%206inch%20Howitzer)

Also, an interesting thing I learnt from this was that this intended not as an SP but simply a mechanised carrier - ( I thought SP as soon as I saw it) - there were only a few dozen made ending up as supply carriers - some with the cannon dolly deleted.
The idea was to just get the cannon there without all that messy mucking about with horses...  then I'm guessing at some stage someone stood back, looked at it and thought - why don't we just leave the arty on board and make the whole thing an artillery piece...    I have read that whilst this was possible in theory it was never recorded as ever happening.
I'm tempted to enter "whatif" territory and create another British WW1 landship specifically as a front-line support SP arty with light support weaponry..
I did do a master for Eureka Minatures many years ago for his Victorian Era steampunk wargame "Pax Limpopo" - a 28mm scale British Pangolin class landship ( HMS Chelmsford in this case)
..and those aren't WH40K or spacey figs - they're Pith-helmeted Poms in steam-powered armoured suits

Sorry Brian (Thewlis) - I got what you meant - ( and I giggled a chirlish David Mitchell laugh at the wicker concept ) -  my comment was in response to moderator Brian as in "this was actually a real thing" and not a whatif...  even though this is essentially a whatif site...    and I could have done with that pic you referred to earlier today !!

I could see Monash asking for something like that to be put together for one of his offensives, or more likely Blamey as he was apparently the innovator, the one who pushed for the tactical implementation of new technology.

Superb job, so totally believable, I could see it in one of the war memorial dioramas any day.
