More 3d printing experimentation.  This was downloaded from http://www.thingiverse.com/make:52394, (http://www.thingiverse.com/make:52394,) printed at 75%, assembled, airbrushed, detailed and all before my sixth coffee went cold.

Cool subject! The guy in red looks like he's looking at that wing joint and wondering "Is it supposed to make THAT noise?"

.. all up - 45mins to print, 2 mins to assemble, 10mins to paint.   Not bad for instant karma !!

Looks fun, weird but fun. So how did the cost of printing compare with a kit of similar size (approx) ?

Cost of printer is in the thousands - cost of ABS used around 60 cents. So, it's prohibitively expensive on its own when the method is considered, but it's waaaay cheaper than resin when you consider the media.  Obviously it's not the only thing I got the printer for so as I entertain myself between "serious" projects the cost will be buoyed accordingly.

Serious projects you ask ?  I make masters for Eureka Miniatures as a weekend hobby.

and up until now I would use the carve up a piece of plasticard to do the job and then cast in resin via RTV.

As of last month I start the process by rendering up a base to work from via Sketchup, convert, make watertight (virtually) and then print in ABS.

Following that I continue with the object as if it was a plasticard scratchbuild model but the hard work of 90 degree angles etc has all been done.

This BTR40 was made for Cancon 2014 as a teaser for Eureka to sell ( which they did )  It began as a file on a Friday night, printed on a Saturday, fixed up on a Monday night, RTVed on a Tuesday night, demoulded and cast on a Wednesday night, painted on a Thursday, transported on a Friday and sold on Saturday.  Previously this process would have taken more hours over a longer period.

If you look closely you can see the "contour maps" resolution that occurs on angles..  we're working on it .. early days !!

Tractor/loader with crystals is cool extra touch  8)
