hi all just thought i would post some pics of the build of the Mantua kit Bruma.
I think this is a great kit all peices are laser cut so go together true and square i had no problems with the kit other than those i created myself.The kit comes with enough strip wood to plank it in either Balsa or lime wood Pick just one the one and only mistake i made on this (AND IT WAS HELL TO CORRECT)was to plank the first layer with Balsa (thinking it is easier to bend and sand) and then do the next layer in Lime (thinking it is stronger so will stand upto a few knocks when being sailed)BIG mistake all looked fine when i went to bed went to work on it next night and where the Balsa was not as strong as the Lime the planking had sprung I had to strip all the wood off and start again.

she is supposed to be white but after all the trouble i had with the planking i decided to show the planking off.
so what do you think.

For a model the natural wood finish is extra nice but a full size vessel would never survive long exposed to the elements. At least your yacht can dry off in the protection of the house :)
All you need now is some bikini clad figures lounging n the deck. Does Preiser make anything in that scale?

yes i love the wood finish to white but you are right big wooden vessels take a lot of maintanance.

Jeff, bright finishing aka 'varnishing' the topsides protects just as well as paint,
it's just that most people have never liked the labor required to keep it looking
shiny.
BTW what folks tend to call 'enamel' paint originated as pigmented varnish and the
physical protective qualities of both were about the same, something that is especially
true with today's options in topcoat chemistry. The main advantages of the pigmented
varnish aka paint were a degree of UV protection (very dependent on pigment and
chemistry) and ease of upkeep. Slappin' on another lick o' paint is quicker than the
care of prep and application required of a good varnish job.

1/43 is a nice scale, you can use either figures in a nearby scale to give a little variety in height and build.
She looks like she lifted a prop in the pool shot... is she running a little bit short of ballast?

Quite possibly the ballast in her at the moment is nuts and bolts the gearing is also wrong I recon if I scaled the speed up she would be doing 80-100 knots I like the idea of figures on her though had never thought of that do they make figures that scale then.

1/43 is the same scale as model railroad "O" scale, Preisser has those in it's line, including figures that would make good crew and lounging rich folks.
