Title: M48M476
Post by: finsrin on July 12, 2013, 02:21:16 PM
Seeing two prebuilt 1/72 tank models.
Suddenly thought of a tank bash that can be done in under one minute.
1 > Remove turret from M48
2 > Remove turret from M4/76mm
3 > Place M4 turret on M48 hull
4 > Finished M48M476 tank model  (painting is optional)
Longer I look at it, the more OK it looks.  Varies with viewing angle.
Why: Two were right there in front of me.  M4 turret happens to fit in slots and turns freely.  Ya gotta least try it !

Interesting combination of components.  The profile view shows it to good effect.  As for the back story or reason: Perhaps it was a purpose built training tank with the 76mm gun was preferred in order to reduce the damage on the firing range?

It really makes you appreciate how quickly tanks increased in size. And I'm glad to see I'm not the only person looking at the "T23" turret with an eye towards what other vehicle I can use it on.

As for why such a conversion would be carried out in real life, I guess it could always be a desperate defense scenario to get damaged tanks back in the fight. Kind of like those T55/M18 hybrids used in the Balkans back in the '90s.

Wow that looks cool! It looks like your mad skills for aircraft apply to tanks too!

Thanks,,, but ya know;  this is a no-skill knee jerk parts swap just cuz the two were there.
Is that kitbashing instinct.  Decided to take pics and share.

Now let's see the M48 Turret on the M4 hull...

M48 turret on M4 is ungainly top heavy looking.  Sponsoning of hull at turret is needed.
Will paint and deploy a M48M476 as part of my mostly kitbashed armed forces.  Compared to regular M48 it is lighter with lower center of gravity.  More mobile for base perimeter patrols, acceleration, hill climbing.  Not deployed for MBT type missions.
Figured out a use for the M48M476  :D
Not like its unarmed or thin skinned.

More ammo stowage, too I would expect. If the 'infantry tank' concept had survived into the 'fifties, I couod see this being a
 contender.
