SBDJ Dauntless II
« on: March 02, 2013, 09:47:24 AM »
This build happend same as Spider Venom to F-138.  Pull kits out of stash.  Open one after the other and hope something pops to mind.  After looking at 1/72 Testors Dauntless, I realized wings for 1/72 Airfix Meteor were similar in wing root shape and size to Dauntless.  With a modest amount of cutting-filing they fit well and it was off to figure out the rest.  Jet engine fans are from 1/100 A-10 (same as on Slowy Jet).  Tail wings are 1/48 Me-262.  Like larger tail wheel for ruff field operations, other things are from parts bin.  Drilled holes where front 50cals are and went with 20mm barrels.  Making this a contemporary Dauntless II --- it got low vis markings and modern ordnance.
See briefing page attached to second posting for description and specs.

I built 3 or 4 of those SBDs in grade school and loved each one.  Still have 2 of em fact!  They can be turned into some nice looking birds with a little TLC and as we've seen here are perfect for whiff fodder  8)

Appreciate your comments one and all.   :D
Kit does go way back.  Is third one I built and lowest priced model in my kitbashes.
Wouldn't have out right thought of it.  Doing a multi kit openning session is fun and has worked for me to get a kitbash idea.
Writing the briefing page with background and specs is enjoyable as the build.  Researched jet engine dimensions and power until I found TFE731-3A a fit for the jet pods.  Lends a semi-legitmacy to each kitbash.
Doing that with each build provides a briefing page to display with model when showing it.  Keep it short with large easy reading font.
After thought is it could use a IFR probe.

If I have not read the story yet, it is not that I am uninterested, it is that I cannot read the docx file yet (I am waiting to receive the DVD of Office 2013, soon).

Thanks to have included the brief as picture.
Well, I received just today the Office DVD, and it is installed and the full text completes nicely, thanks! :)

Pleased to hear you guys are liking Dauntless II.  Thanks for your comments.
Was one of simpler builds and particularly fun cuz of that.
My kitbash air force is attack and fighter types.  Mostly built PBH-417 flying boat (not for Floaty GB) will add a different capability.  Unfortunately rework of wing-fuselage juncture became necessary and there was an operator malfunction in the paint shop.  Like to roll it out for first flight before another aircraft is started.
After construction facility recovers from its state of extensive disarry, efforts can turn to design and build of something "Floaty".

First refueling test failed when KC-135 stalled and crashed followed by SBDJ running out of gas but managing deadstick landing on beach.
Am leaning toward building a B-24 tanker to handle IFR equipped (super) Spad XIV on drawing board as well as proposed updated P-26 and the SBDJ.
Might be wise to also have Curtiss Condor (thanks Glencoe) tankers.
Open to alternate tanker suggestions.........

I think a Condor tanker will prove the ideal solution, finsrin!

It would sure look good refueling the Dauntless II and an updated P-26...maybe via probe & drogue?

Regarding IFR probes.   SBDJ was an early adaptor.
