The photo of the F-18 and the race car remind me of an article in Hotrod magazine many years ago. Some writers for the mag got into the discussion of which would win, a dragster on a drag strip or an F-14 off the ships catapult. They actually timed the car on a local strip at the appropriate distance then went to the US Navy base at Pax River to time an F-14 at the same distance. The Navy cooperated in the name of recruiting so the timing equipment was set up along the catapult that is built into the ground there. Long story short the F-14 beat the pants off the dragster.

We once had someone say, during contract negotiations without blinking, that "we would use the JMSU procedure" to cover a particular aspect.  When asked by our side afterwards what the JMSU procedure was the answer was:  Just Make Shit Up. ;D

I've got that exact same copy of HRM, amazing. It was timed over 1/8 mile for the car I think. The F-14 was timed to the end of the catapult.

It was Tom McEwan's funny car actually, as he was sponsored by the USN at the time,

I'll see if I can dig out the mag for the actual figures, and I can scan the centre spread which has the funny car burning out alongside the Tomcat!

They did some photos of the car and the F-14 next to each other at Pax River before the actual cat shot. No way was the Navy going to let anyone run a car next to a cat shot at the same time! F-14 were just too expensive for that risk! I believe the distance was equal to the length of the catapult but I would have to check. I believe I have that copy around somewhere......

Working at Joint Ops I was once asked "What's the TLA for that?"

"TLA?? what does that mean?"

"Three Letter Acronym"  ::)
That reminds me: apparently some designers of flying models (miniature aircraft) get quite acceptable results using the TLAR principle for their designs.

Or as one intelligence briefer put it, and it got carried for a fair in presentations, the BFM pod on a MiG-23, "Beats the F*** out of Me".  I understand that when a general asked specifically and was told that, slides were quickly altered to remove that.

Not as common as SNAFU or FUBAR, but often more fitting when the situation went from mildly unsatisfactory to abysmal:  BOHICA

At one point, my unit seemed to be constantly being dumped upon, so we started calling ourselves "The Last of the Bohicans."

Because of the search for the missing Malaysian airliner, we now have the highly unusual situation of PLAAF aircraft operating out of a RAAF base here in Western Australia.  Il-76s, three of them to help in the search.

Errr...are you sure about the number?  My understanding was that it was 2 Il-76s (as shown) and a Y-8 to follow.

Original number quoted was "three".  You may be right that it's just two Il-76s and another aircraft but "three" must have stuck in my mind for some reason.  Now amended!

Y-8?  I wish they'd send a Harbin SH-5.

yeah, a Harbin or an Ekranoplan or Martin Mars would make sense given the need to find then recover debris before it drifted away again.

That top head-on photo makes me crave more biplane tails ....

The brown clouds look like they may have been photoshopped in. What's supposed to be going on?

That was the first thing I thought of too but if it is Photoshopped they did one heck of a good job detailing the little splashes in the water from the fragments of what ever it was that is exploding in the air.  It could be part of the screening system for the Tuna Boats coming ashore or some kind of pyrotechnic artillery simulatior.

The close proximity of the explosions to the vehicles in the water and the buildings in the background also support the less hazardous vehicle smoke screening system or pyrotechnics used for a training exercise.
