Skywave / Pitroad modern navy accessories parts ID
« on: August 04, 2013, 10:08:10 PM »
I have raided my various Dragon 1/700 Ship kits and have lots and lots of US, UK and other NATO/Euro weapons and accessories.  Basically rather than tooling these bits for each kit individually they have included the entire sprue with everything, i.e. HMS Daring has a sprue full of gun mounts, missile launchers, radars and directors just to provide the kit with a Lynx helo.

My problem is while I know or can work out what most of this is I don't know all of it is so does anyone have a sheet that IDs it all or could scan the back of the original Skywave / Pitroad boxes (I think these have the details) that would be great.

When whiffing a completely fictional RN BBG I would like to match the correct radars , directors etc. to the appropriate launchers.

I know the sprues you're talking about.  Give me a day or so and I'll find shots and ID the parts for you.

I love that they throw in the whole sprue in each kit.  Wonderful spare parts fodder but I still find myself looking for more of certain parts because the sprues only have 1-2 of what I want  ;D

Great, thanks for that.  I am planning to build Duke of York up with main armament intact but will leave the various secondaries and tertiaries off until I know exactly what I have to play with.
I still haven't decided what period I'll do which will effect outfit and back story.

OK, I'll do the RN Weapon's Sprue for now since you're doing a KGV.  If you want the two US sprues (WWII and Modern) done as well just ask.  Keep in mind the RN sprue has some US equipment as well, particularly Cold War era SAMs (very highly prized!!!)

I don't have one of my sprues in front of me at the moment so I'm just going off of those shots so sorry if I have "???" as an entry.  Not all the parts are facing the same side and the reviewer didn't flip it over so...  :-\  All answers are to the best of my knowledge.  Remember that some of the parts are to be considered "representations" IE some artistic liberty was taken due to casting technologies so they won't look "exactly" like they're supposed to look.

See "Sprue B" for close up shots: http://www.modelwarships.com/reviews/ships/hms/dd/700-liverpool-dr/dragon-review.html

^ IIRC, the Exocet containers are also much too big.

I really wish they'd just make a new set from new moulds, updated and (more) accurate. Include it with re-issued kits and offer them separately to those wishing to tart up older kits in their stashes.
Cheers,

Thanks for that, very useful info.  I would never have picked the US 3"/70s they had me stumped.  Too bad they didn't include the UK 3"/70 twin or the Mk26 6", they are a must for 50s / 60s RN wiffs.

I thought the 48s were Breda-Bofors twin 40mm L70 compact mounts, the 33s were the barrels for them, and the 32s were the barrels for the RN 4.5" Mk.VI...????

Could the 58s and 63s be blocks for the various boats to sit on?

Could the 25 be a generic nav radar?

Could the 41s be the "vertical loaf" shaped jammers seen port and starboard on most RN ships?

Re Exocet boxes,  the allegedly 1/700th Pit Road ones are too big, while the allegedly 1/600th Airfix ones added to various old kits to update them are too small, so if you swap them over, they're pretty much right!

Cool I have an Airfix Amazon with Exocets.  Had a close look at the sprue I lifted from Dragons USS Virginia, it looks like new tooling with very fine detail and a much more realistic Standard missile for the finer Mk 26s.  I hope in time they do retool all of them as well as providing some more unusual stuff, Bofors 120mm twin and single mounts would be nice as well as the RN 3 and 6" mounts I mentioned earlier.  I wonder how long until we see some 1950/60s RN and Euro ships from Dragon and or Trumpeter, I would kill for a decent 1/700 pre helo conversion Tiger, a County and a Centaur.  Suffren, Tromp and Audace are pretty high up my list too, or maybe even Colbert, De Reuter and Garibaldi.

A decent Leander in 1/700th should be a money-spinner for Airfix if they design it in a modular way so they can keep re-issuing it in different versions....

Weapons-wise, a Mk.13 would be good, as would an Oto-Melara 76mm Super Rapid, and Bofors SAK-57 Mk.1, 2 and 3, Aspide and Crotale.

I have gone to the dark side and ordered packets of 4" twin, 40mm Bofors singles and Quadruple 2pdr Pom Poms from WEM rather than scrounging the spares box and robbing other kits.  See how it goes on my RAN "War Emergency Program" Tribal Class Destroyer, may be lifting some or all of the Oerlikons from the weapons sprue detailed above for this project too.

Has anyone had any experience with Orange Hobby stuff?  They appear to do a variety of accessories that I may be tempted to try now I'm building stuff again.

Well what is the kit as a whole like but specifically the helos and accessories supplied with it.  The photos on line show almost unbelievable detail with PE doors on helos etc.  Just thought Id ask for opinions before forking out for some bits, or even a full kit.
