The dark area is Lake Michigan with Chicago on the southern end. Might be St Louis in the foreground.

These photos were taken by a High School friend. Out of a school population of 1,200, I think we were the only two students who were big into aviation.

He is now a FO on Air Canada B787s.

I believe that to be the case. Here is a photo of Curiosity. No extra launch mass from fuzzy dice, hood ornaments, fenders and chrome trim. Though they do have mag rims.

You'd think, considering the environment that they have found on Mars, all that exposed stuff would be more protected.

There should be a petition to NASA to include Fuzzy Dice on all future missions. The dice do not have to be large but just think of the future when someone encounters one of these relics from the past and has no clue why there are fuzzy dice on the craft and what purpose did they serve. We in the past would get the last laugh first.

There's no water to rust connections and the atmospheric pressure is very low, so no large wind blown rocks to bang into cables. If a component needs temperature regulation or protection from the dust that will settle/get blown onto the vehicle, it'll be inside a box of some sort.

Opportunity was on Mars for 14 years and it died from lack of power during a severe dust storm that kept its solar panels from charging the internal batteries. Curiosity (and the 2020 rover) are nuclear decay powered, so that won't be an issue.
