I don't think it looks too grimy, just too streaky, especially on the hood/bonnet. You could probably give the cargo area a thin layer of light brown pigments to simulate dirt and dust.

Thanks Mog,
I posted this over at WhatIf, but forgot to post it here.

Years ago, I saw a Von Braun "Round the Moon" ship on Shapeways:

It was in 1/400 scale, so I asked the designer if he could rescale it to 1/350 and he did. I bought a copy and quickly realized how delicate it was. I managed to prep and paint it with only minor damage (the radio dish and the mercury boiler snapped off) but the white primer just didn't look right. I put it away for a few years and recently, I tried to remove the acrylic primer with denatured alcohol. The age of the print (6-7 years) or something else softened the resin plastic and barely touched the primer. I let it dry out and the print hardened again... but in the process, the frame never straightened out. I think they may have separated in some spots as well

This is accurately scaled (you can see a ghostly astronaut right below it) - compared to the Pegasus kit, it's the length of the cargo module.

I guess the only option I have is to use the drawings in the "Spaceship Handbook" and CAD up a version. I'll make it so it's easier to paint and maybe not as delicate (the resin Shapeways used is much more brittle than modern hobbyist resins). I just started the CAD work and it's moving along. Of course, the hard part (besides detailing) is breaking it down into reasonably easy to print sections.

I'm not a treadhead, but this is looking crazy cool !

I'm seeing this in a three colour scheme with a black line between colours a bit like the Char B, just a suggestion  ;)

Thanks guys.

And now the fun part, the weathering !

First rubbed away the  Mascol  to reveal the rusty bits and underlining green paint then gave the load space a light  rubbing down and added some extra rust and paint to break up the wear pattern a bit, finished off with some oil stains.

The rest of the body got a black wash, which I overdid in the first instance and had to wash a lot of it off, but that worked in my favour.

Although it still looks  a bit over Grimy to me

Also dirtied up the wheels and started preparing a couple of replacement headlights as the ones in the kit are odd and would not work in a civilian setting

Although they don't look very weathered  in this photo  ::)

Thanks for looking............

Strange ! on my screen it shows that Kerik (8 votes) beat Claymore (7 votes) !

Congratulations on a masterful build and a worthy winner!

Yup, and that’s why I congratulated him.  Am I missing something?

Valkyrie Update:

I have been working steadily on the Valkyrie’s weapon system and, it would be fair to say, it is doing my head in! It’s all a bit like juggling soot or herding cats - trying to keep the design practicalities of a complex 3D shape with several moving parts in my noggin while trying to hold all the various built sub-components in place in order to make some critical measurements is all but impossible. I need to rapidly evolve and grow another pair of arms and several more hands!

Meanwhile, the hull also still needs some serious surgery in order to get everything to fit in place - why do I do this to myself? 🤪

Tips, Tools & Techniques / Re: 3D Printing Tips and Techniques

If your printer can print ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene), ASA (Acrylonitrile Styrene Acrylate) or HIPS (High Impact Polystyrene), they can be glued with common plastic solvent cements (like Tamiya Extra Thin) or Acetone. You can also smooth the print lines with Acetone, either carefully applied with a brush, or with Acetone vapor smoothing. I did this on my Cierva-Nemeth VSTOL

Printing with the plastics above requires a heated bed that can get close to 100C (most modern filament printers can do this) and an enclosure. Unlike PLA - which likes to be cooled as soon as it's printed -  ABS and similar need a constant, relatively high environmental temperature during printing, so an enclosure is needed, preferably vented to the outside.

If your printer is limited to PLA, the only safe options for smoothing are a combination of sanding and primer. This works well for objects with few or no raised surface details.

One other use of filament 3D printing is to make a skeleton or framework for attaching styrene sheets; they can be glued down to PLA with CA or epoxy.

I love to watch you work these old (but still very good) Tamiya kits into masterpieces.
