Inspect, Neutralize, Report ...

'It's mourning again in America.'

The real wars are over long since  but 'The Great Burning' continues unabated. No central authorities exists to fight the large scale fires. Nor to clear away the detritus of war. Combat equipment remains where it fell ... or stood.

However, there was a recognition among the re-established, ad hoc regional administrations that local conflicts would only cease when heavy weapons salvage from the 'Ultimate Conflict' became impossible. To that end, an inter-authority Emergency Disarmament Agency (EDA) was established to collect (or destroy) abandoned weaponry. Most importantly, the EDA attempts to control the spread of heavy weaponry recovered from ruined or abandoned 'mechs'. This had proven an overwhelming task for local authorities. Logistic aid is now being provided by EDA Field Survey & Recovery Teams (FRSTs) but even investigating wartime machinery is rife with hazards and difficulties.

Here, a long-delayed visit is being made to a partially-destroyed walker in the New Tribal Zone. With so much time having passed, this 'mech' inspection is more of a formality for FSRT members. A cursory survey reveals that this walker has been thoroughly picked over and nothing of real value remains. Multiple blaster strikes on the hull resulted in catastrophic damage. However, many of those strikes seem to be 'after action'. An early hit on the crew compartment will have put this walker out of action and survivors were unlikely.

Such 'after action' hits tend to indicate territorial claims made by minor warlords or militias. [1] That conclusion is reinforced by a decade's worth of graffiti daubed onto this walker. In the fear-driven etiquette of the feral, members of less powerful gangs have carefully avoided marking their graffiti anywhere near the 'BDS' tags of the then-dominant local militia.

There are obvious signs of local salvage efforts conducted shortly after fighting's end. It was observed that a number of hatches were jettisoned for recovery on the ground - such composite armour panels making handy add-on protection for militia vehicles. Other major panels were blown off by the force of internal explosions caused by the original blaster strikes. There were no signs of major armaments, other than the walker's main blaster units. Likely, these weapons were made largely unserviceable by the fatal blaster strikes but FSRT members have now removed key components just to ensure no future use.

With this walker's relatively remote location and unstable local security conditions, no large-scale material salvage effort is anticipated by the EDA.

[1] Such false claims were invariably made in the belief that being able to claim a 'kill' over such an imposing machine would raise prestige. Doubtless this tactic work. At war's end, no-one was likely to challenge claims made by the local bully-boys or petty tyrants.

Thanks folks! Not sure that SW fits in here but, somehow, I got stuck on post-apocalypic walkers ...

Would make for a cool diorama.

Cheers Moritz! Anyone up for besmirching a 1/144 Bandai AT-AT?  ;D
