FROG Macchi C.202 "What-If" Models Complete, See Posts Below

Build Progress Reports Will Be Continuously Posted Here, Photos Of Built Models Will Be On Separate Postings

The 1963-vintage FROG Aeronautica Macchi C.202 was the first 1/72 scale injected plastic kit of the Folgore, clunky well as inaccurate it nevertheless is easy to build, out of production since the mid-1970s affordable aftermarket kits are still available. All my previous "What-If" FROG C.202 models with early 1943 C.205N-1 style fuselage-wing root-mounted Breda-SAFAT 12.7mm machine gun packs utilizing SUPERMODEL FIAT CR.32 wing-mounted machine gun blisters were in pre-June 1940 Regia Aeronautica Italiana (RAI) liveries & markings well as wartime extensions thereof assuming Folgori entered RAI service early in 1940, the next three well as my last-ever FROG kit builds will be in post-June 1940 RAI Tavola X liveries & markings, one in a colorful though not without precedent "What-If" livery. Two of the kits are 1963-1974 FROG releases third a 1964 AIR LINES release:

…"The Last FROGs" for sure ending 56 years on-off building this kit majority of them since 2006. Precisely because they're clunky gluing on SUPERMODEL FIAT CR.42 gun blisters doesn't make them appear unrealistic, SEM Models Macchi C.205N-1 wing root-mounted machine gun moldings are authentic though trying to replicate them on the FROG kits would require laborious fabricating each one from styrene plastic stock, no guarantees on how well they'd turn out. The AIR LINES kit shown above is from my "never will build" collection, eBay one bought yesterday will be, box is in marginal condition, may save it well as kit instructions & Testors PLA Enamels Painting Guide unique to the 1964-1966 AIR LINES kits.

By the way, Testors' line of PLA enamels were amongst the first all-comprehensive post-WWII line of enamel hobby paints for scale modelers et. al. hobbyists Pactra enamels being the other, matte enamel formulas began coming on line in 1964, didn't see Floquil military matte lacquers till 1966.

End Of A 56-Year "Love-A-FROG" Affair ;>(
« Reply #7 on: April 27, 2020, 12:27:33 PM »
The above models albeit "What-Ifs" forever ends my passionate 56-year on-off love of these easy though at times vexing to build FROG Aeronautica Macchi C.202 Folgore 1/72 scale model kits. The very first build in 1964 was a "slap-together" though immediately was captivated with the aircraft notwithstanding the Impressionistic box top art rendered by the great aviation artist Joseph ("Jo") Kotula (1910-1998) along with 23 others of the original 1964 U.S.A. AIR LINES FROG kit issues. More Folgori would be built during the latter 1960s, all painted varying shades of dreadful first by hand then airbrushed with a U.S. $15 single-action Binks Wren airbrush, still available 60-plus years later via Pittsburg Spray Equipment, not till c.1979-80 would the next ones be built sprayed with Badger 150 et. al. airbrushes.

For the record; my all-time number of single-subject model builds "at one time" were eight FROG C.202s whilst living at the folks former house here in Cameron Park c. summer 1991, had them professionally photographed for publication in FineScale Modeler, sadly didn't have copies the prints. In 1992 I'd exhibited them at a IPMS-Silverwings Sacramento model contest, this when Silverwings allowed modelers to independently show off their builds without having to pay for table space, knowing the "same people" still run Silverwings no chance of my winning any contest awards despite them being very good builds at the time.

These builds most likely end my foray with "What-If" model building, "Italians" for sure absolutely! WWII Luftwaffe & Armee de l'Air Battle Of France 1940 builds will be during 2021/22 afterwards am retiring from model building, or so I plan!

Beautiful work!!  I do like the way you think.  I will be sorry, though, to see you stepping away from Italian aircraft, you do them so well.
...Running out of models in stock to build (10 left as of April 28, 2020) well as subjects to build! Italian Kits lists their IKW7203 twin-engine FIAT G.18/18V resin kit as "at work" meaning under development despite posting two photos showing all the kit parts! Their website hasn't been updated for months so methinks either they're having financial, staffing, production, supply or other issues well as COVID-19 given how devastating its been in Italy. SEM Model went out of business when its owner died late last year, failed to buy one of their first - and only issue - 1/72 scale Savoia-Marchetti SM.84 resin kit early last year, fortuitously did get all other kits they had in stock I'd wanted.

Aside from the previously mentioned, SBS's 2018-issue 1/72 FIAT G.50 is the only "new" anything in the way of 1/72 scale "Italians" I've seen in recent years. Aftermarket BroPlan 1/72 Italian-subject vacuforms come up for sale time to time well as Aviation USK's (i.e. Caproni Ca.111 & 133), bought number of the former's, none of the latter yet - if ever! I'd love to build BroPlan's 2004-vintage MS-86 & MS-88 Aeronautica Umbra T.18 fighter vacuforms but given up on finding/buying any. Till end of 2022 will still be on the watch for "Italians" fate hopefully working in my favor meantime.

...See above post for recent Italian subject kit purchases. Seven "Italians" left to build currently all BroPlan vacuforms MS-44 CANT Z.506C conversion of Italeri's Z.506B sole one not pure vacuform. Barring any new or reissue 1/72 scale Italian aviation subjects now till end of 2022 that's it for the "Italians". Late this year or early 2021 building commences on limited series of 1/72nd 1938-45 Deutsches Luftwaffe & 1940 Battle Of French Armee de l'Air subjects, when they're done that's it for on-off scale modeling since 1961.

...Don't have space to store builds that along with aging & associated aches, pains et. al. health issues, eyes & hands are good though stress during builds has gotten to me.

When resumed model building in 2004 after 12 year absence the "Italian Epoch" commenced in 2006; build at least one of each 1/72nd scale Italian military subject kit late 1920s to 1946 period majority of them coming on the market after 2000, "Passion Of The Italians" commencing in 1964 building the first of many 1963-vintage Aeronautica Macchi C.202 FROG AIR LINES kits along with PROFILE Publications' Italian aviation subject monographs. There are well over 200 Italian military aviation models in 60 custom fabricated display cases, photographing each & every one will take years that after building limited number of German Luftwaffe & 1940 French Air Force models in 2021.
