I was unable to find a dedicated thread to Jeep. Really surpised. If I am wrong, please correct me.

Two ways to stretch a soviet Jeep.

When he was stationed in the Phillipines at the end of and after WWII Wally Parks, co-founder
of Hot Rod and Motor Trend magazines, founder of the NHRA (National Hot Rod Association)
the original drag-racing sanctioning body, hot-rodded a Bantam BRC-40 with a 2.3L /136 ci
Ford V8-60 Flathead from a captured Japanese vehicle. Love the shiny beauty rings on the
wheels. The name has been commonly been translated as 'Follow Me', however another Tagalog
to English translation is 'C'mon do it'.
 ;D
The BRC-40 was a limited production version of Bantam's competitor for the GP competition
that was won by Willys, even though Ford got the big production contracts.

Reminds me of a short story I read "way back when" in the seventh or eighth grade (that's a minimum of 55 years ago, forgive me if I don't remember all the details) entitled, IIRC, The Affair of the Wayward Jeep.  It's set during the Korean conflict when a young hot-rodder is assigned as a general's drive and he improves the general's ride, including swapping on the straight four for a Buick V-8 out of the salvage area.  When the general gets ambused, they get away because that jeep moves faster than the expected standard jeep.

Damn, now I'm going to have to find that story again and re-read for pleasure.

Delayed read of post, but Buick didn't have a V-8 until the 1st Gen 322 in3 'nailhead' was
first offered to the public in late '53 for the '54 model year. It would be way too big, and
heavy, for a jeep.

Buick 322
Length: 33.50
Height: 29.00
Width: 28.00
Weight: 685 lbs

Willys L-134 'Go Devil'
Length: 26.53
Height: 27.34
Width: 21.16
Weight: 365 lbs

Maybe it was an Oldsmobile Rocket? The timing is about right. Not sure though if that 1949 Olds 303 would have been much smaller than the later Buick  :(

Peugeot P4 (based on Mercedes Benz G) is pretty much a "jeep".

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peugeot_P4

We had them in UN peace keeping forces in Lebanon in 1991. Power wasn't exactly abundant, going up steep slopes while carrying a bit of load.

The story is The Affair of the Wayward Jeep and it's set during the Korean War.

Mauldin's description of the Jeep being re-engined with a Ford flathead V-8 from a
Japanese staff car aligns with what Wally created and I wouldn't be at all surprised
if Bill knew about Wally's hotrod Jeep.

Cheers, Jon

in various collections including 52 Miles to Terror which is available for checkout

Useful insight right here -

This modification was created by the 17th Infantry Regiment. Talking to Korean War veterans of the Regiment Association during one of our reunions. They me it was used to supplement their I&R platoon during the Battle of the Guardposts time period. (? 1952-53).

Based on close/ enlargement of the photos, my opinion is that they had reversed the drive train. Rear axle under the engine and the front diff was placed where the rear axle was originally attached. The crew compartment was reversed. the driver is now over the front axle and sat on the right side. It had a ball turret 30 cal MG. The ball turret most likely is one that was used on the M4A3E8 tank. I'm saying this is because the Tank Company was equipped with the Easy 8 Sherman. IT was also armed with two 30 cal and one 90mm Recoilless rifle on a pedestal.

Those mods are pretty significant. I'm sure JMNs would complain that mods like that are just not done, especially in a combat zone.
