Blackburn Buccaneer
« on: March 02, 2013, 03:32:10 AM »
can't find a topic on this so here goes ....

Ever notice how the Bloodhound missile & H.S. Buccaneer have similar outlines ?  Just put the crude ('60's technology) Airfix kits of the 72nd scale Bucc & HO/OO B/Hound beside each other & find that they go together quite well.  The Russians have a few very-large missiles for aircraft, so why not the Brits ?

A 1/350th Bucc would be 55mm long - ideal to make a missile to go under the 72nd Bucc's wing !
Doesn't someone do a 350th British aircraft set for carriers ???

I've been thinking of a Bucc S Mk.3 as an alternative or supplement to the Tornado GR.1.  The Spey's would be replaced by "cropped-fan Tay's" that fit the same envelope as the Speys and avionics would be updated to match what's on the Tornado.  There would probably be some radome outline changes and I could see the SAAF's rocket booster installation as a standard fit for rapid launch and to allow use of the extended underwing tanks of the SAAF in addition to, or in place of, the bulged weapons bay door of the RAF.

Another option would be a more dedicated tanker version with the equipment all internal to the weapons bay rathr than carried on a pod under the wing.

Looking to do at least one West German S.51 one in MFG1 or MFG2 markings.  SAAF tanks and the booster rocket fit for scramble departures with tanks on the inboard hardpoints and Komoran missiles on the outboard ones.  Dding the RAF bulged weapons bay tank would be an option to be added later.

If I was doing a tanker with the HDU equipment in a modified weapons bay, I think I'd look at using underwing tanks on all four wing hardpoints, preferably the SAAF tanks for the extra capacity.

How about an Electronic Warfare Bucc in the same vein as the EA-6?  Sling some Jammer pods under the wings and include fuel + more electronics in the weapons bay.

Remember that a Bucc has a whacking great avionics bay full of 1950s/60s black boxes in the rear fuselage. Modernise and miniaturise that lot and you get a whole load of space. For a tanker, you could probably lose a lot of it and get an HDU in there, leaving the whole bomb bay for fuel.

I was rather surprised to find that there isn't a thread on this aircraft.

I'm thinking both alternate users and alternate weapon loadouts.  For example:
Marineflieger with SAAF rocket boosters & long drop tanks, RAF bulged weapons bay, and Komorans under each wing
JASDF with either four ASM-1 or -2 missiles or two drop tanks and two missiles
RSwedAF  in 3-tone green splinter camo with two or four Rb.04 or Rb.05 missiles
USMC and/or USN markings as "A-8" when the electronics don't come together and the A-6 Intruder program fails

There was indeed a thread, topics merged and thread renamed Blackburn Buccaneer to ease
future searches.

I wonder what you'd get crossing the Buccaneer's stout airframe with the A-6's avionics and nav/attack systems fit?

A-6 was a heavy user of wire-wrap for integration, would it be up to the Bucc's operational profile?
A former co-worker at Boeing was former USN avionics and the A-6 wire-wrap was the bane of his
existence, he related that the failure rate/downtime was excessive. When wire-wrap was chosen
for avionics integration on the 747-400 he protested so vigorously that it detrimentally affected
his career for the rest of his time at Boeing. Boeing went with wire-wrap and the operators hate it.

USAF SEA over black.

Yup yup yup.

Okay, just had to try this.

Night attack scheme with GBU-10s for precision attack. Wanted to try toned down markings on SEA camo with black undersides on another build and thought this was a good chance to give it a try. I suppose they'd be less bright on an actual, weathered build.

Daytime attack scheme with loads of Mk 82s. Did this one just because it I wanted to see how it looked and simply involved changing some colours.

The Hell's Angel nose art was  created by taking a pic of an Italeri B-57B decal sheet and painting over it in MS Paint. Time-consuming, but worth it.
Cheers,
Moritz
