Seems ok to me now.  Though will look into - it may just be a server issue.  If it continues though, we will look into further.

Zero problems on my end.

Could you guys please indicate which operating systems and browsers you are using,
the time of the incidents etc., as I'm going to start tracking problems and can use as
much data as possible.

It was early this morning PST when I had the white screen telling me that it could not access the data base while attempting to post comments on two separate occasions.  Reloading did not work in one instance so I used the back option to refresh the screen and proceed again with better results on the second attempt.  I should have copied the text on the screen but did not do so.  Shame on me.

Thanks guys.

My luck changed as I was getting the can't connect errors etc., and even lost the RSS feed.
Note folks that once again this is not an SMF forum software issue, it's a GoDaddy
server issue.

I have also contacted the host providers to see what is up with the server.  We are trying.

Yes, I know.  It is frustrating.  I am working on and am working to correct as soon as possible.  In the meantime, I ask you to be patient and to simply use the refresh option when needed.

I just got a time-out error while posting a reply to an Admin thread. I'm using XP on IE 8. Fortunately, a "back arrow" and clicking the post button again solved it.

Experienced a couple of blank screens this morning and when I checked to see how many people were active it stated 6 X members and 2 X visitors for a total of eight at that moment.  Odd that we are experiencing this sort of thing with so few people actually on the forums.  When you consider the larger numbers participating on forums such as ARC where the numbers are sometimes in the triple digits it is puzzling to experience time outs with so few people on the forum.

As far as timing out though, let me just say that as I continue to work with this 42mb 3D model in SketchUp I am experiencing far more time-outs and it is not making my SketchUp experience very enjoyable at the moment.  :(

It seems that the number of SQL server connections is not a one-to-one ratio with the number of people logged in,
i.e. every-time an avatar is read it's a connection, so if you have a thread with 6 to 10 different avatars visible that is
6 to 10 connections right there, never mind the auto-profile checks etc. going on at the same time. There are
tricks shown on the SMF forum board and in the Online Manual that show ways to reduce this activity, and of course
as most of it is written by IT weasels, the directions are opaque rather than transparent. I'm slogging through the
stuff and I will be trying to implement these hints. Of course the bigger question is: why doesn't the forum
software automatically configure itself in this 'superior' format?
See above reference to weasels.  :-X

Hi there

I have been getting the Hawian shirt with the shutters around 6-8 times, usually going back froma thread to the forum section I was working through.

My Tuppence worth

I was getting the Hawaian shirt but hopefully Greg has sorted that out for me.

I do get time outs as I try to log in however. Both yesterday and today had to log in a couple of times before I was actually "in"

Not sure if this is relevant but I keep getting "Post contains no data". This may be my slow connection. But, if anyone else is getting that pop-up, just hitting 'reload' does the trick.

Oh they're reduced considerably, so whatever you're doing, keep it up.  I did manage to get one earlier today but a refresh of the page cleared it up.

I know.  I believe the problem lies with the hosting provider...mind you, getting them to admit that is a whole new world of fun.  I am also looking to see if there is any pattern (e.g. Goes slow at a certain time of the day or month).

If it gets to the point your going to shop for a host I've had pretty good luck with Hostmonster.

Please note that we are trying to resolve this.  It is by far our most important issue and certainly is not being ignored.  I am trying again to get some resolution with the hosting provider.  If that does not work, we will be seriously looking at a change of hosting provider and demanding a refund.

Folks,

As part of our resolving this, would you please note down the following each time you experience this problem:

The time?
What you were trying to do?
The exact error message you received?
Anything else that might be of relevance - e.g. Were there other members online at the time?
What you did to resolve?
How long it affected you?

Please either list this here or PM (or even email me) with this.  It will all help in resolving this.

Regards,

Greg

Did you happen to try to load a page quite quickly after looking at another page when it happened.  I ask since I have had that error message in such circumstances.  It's almost as though you go too quickly and trip it up.  As you said, when you go back and reload it is all good.

I'm beginning to think that some of the problem could be related to the mode you use to connect to the internet.  If you're on cable, which is by far the quickest connection, there doesn't seem to be any problems.  But if you use dial-up, you've got serious problems.  Having moved into a very rural area (nearest town is 25 kms away) my options came to dial-up, satellite or wireless.  Dial-up is a non-starter - period, satallite was ok except for some reason or other, the particular satallite used by the ISP company I was with was right down on the horizon and got effected by various influences, which left wireless.
So I use wireless but even this service can be problematic as they're not all the same.  Just recently I've switched ISP companies and the one I'm using now is like night and day to the one I was with, almost as fast as cable and a lot of the forum site problems I was having, aren't happening anymore.  Whether that's coincidental I don't know.
Title: Re: SlowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwGoing
Post by: apophenia on April 22, 2012, 07:29:54 AM
Speed of connection probably has an influence. I'm on cable but still get those 'failed to open stream' thingies from time to time. But, as Greg said, hit 'reload' and nyet problema.
