Camthalion's excellent T-14 thread (http://beyondthesprues.com/Forum/index.php?topic=7216.0) reminded me of a project abandoned around 2003, based on the Soviet prototypes placing the turret crew deep in the hull (http://i.imgur.com/bF2AMU1.jpg)

I think I scored a pair of DML T80 kits on sale, and started splicing them together based on what was available Open Source back then. I remember the endstate was supposed to look like one of those factory-straight-to-battlefield 1945 E50s.

1) Anyone else have massive troubles remembering what the hell they were thinking 15 years ago?
2) Anyone know where I put all those little subcomponents I built? Last I saw them, they were in a box.

Reminds me of this tank:

Tron tank in 35th scale is certainly one subject that has been ignored.
-
Heh. True that.
If Orr Kelly (https://www.amazon.com/King-Killing-Zone-Story-Americas/dp/0393332934) (designer of the M1 Abrams) got his inspiration from American tankers telling him they wanted a King Tiger that moved fast, gotta wonder what inspired Soviet tank designers (pirated copies of TRON?).
If I was inspired, I could echo the dystopian mindset of that (Russian) STALKER video game.

Has anyone tackled the "laser" tanks from Hammer's Slammers?
Or those variants mentioned in the Texas-Israeli War of 1999?

Certainly NOT a Slammers' tank - but absolutely inspired by them & using a "powergun" type plasma weapon.

I'd sure hate to come across one of these in a bad mood!
Love your paintwork, especially on the skirts (hey-yooo!).
Most excellent!

Again, 20 years ago I saw a drawing like this -

Better visualization, unavailable to me at the time of initial build.

I'd picked up a few DML T-72 kits and figured 'why not? I'll tackle my interpretation of that...'
I'd gotten only this far, and you guys know what happens. Life.

"I really should finish this", thinks I. "What would make sense?", thinks I. I don't want to spend a bunch of time on it, but still. Since art imitates life, it should become one of abandoned projects that seem to litter the former Soviet Union.
So I went a googlin' and found this.

Well now, if that wasn't a bias confirmation I don't know what is.

Taking stock, both the hull and turret needed to be addressed (since I wouldn't call it *finished*)

So the hull deck needed to be plated off, over the crew/autoloader/whatever section
(https://i.imgur.com/41sf86i.jpg)
Then primed (https://i.imgur.com/DFdrAOr.jpg)
and given a base coat of green (https://i.imgur.com/KH8xuIs.jpg)(https://i.imgur.com/NA1HURd.jpg)
Yeah, turret needs inspiration

So, what's the final product going to resemble?

Eight road wheel arrangement looks interesting. A shame that you could not find a way to mount the engine/transmission up front (like the Merkava) and have a rear entrance for access and loading the ammunition racks. But still looks like a great project that I hope you can finish [soon].

I was following the original Soviet/Russian pattern.
I too hope I can cobble the rest of the turret togethor.

First pass at weathering the hull, over the base coat.

Still more goodnessness.

This is gonna be great! 8)

Does make for interesting diorama possibilities, though.
-
That's a lot of roadwheels! The first pass at the rust and weathering looks good.

How would you work on the suspension of the inner set of tracks on that monstrosity?
-
With great difficulty

Looks cool

Some serious stryrene chopping going on there! Nice work

Yeah, I figure the lead engineer for this project was this guy (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dEkOT3IngMQ).

"The way I understand it, the Russians are sort of a combination of evil and incompetence... sort of like the Post Office with tanks." - Emo Philips
I keep finding bits and pieces meant for the original concept, like this pair of Remote Control Weapons Stations (RCWS) armed with NSVT 12.7 mm HMGs (DML Naval Infantry figure shown for scale).
They would have filled the two turret hatches, oriented respectively to the 12 and 6 o'clock positions. Now that this build has transitioned to an abandoned project worthy of STALKER, they are redundent.
In reality, while the Russians are still behind on this, the Indians have been working on their own spin. https://www.armyrecognition.com/march_2020_news_defense_global_security_army_industry/india_has_developed_new_remotely_weapon_station_armed_with_nsvt_12.7mm_machine_gun.html (https://www.armyrecognition.com/march_2020_news_defense_global_security_army_industry/india_has_developed_new_remotely_weapon_station_armed_with_nsvt_12.7mm_machine_gun.html)
Was going through my photo albums, realized I actually started another thread on this three years ago.

Yikes. I started this thing over four years ago (and it was a WIP then)

So over the past weeek I rolled around in a pile of epiphanies and figured out where this mastodon is to wind up.

Came out great!

Worth the journey though

Thanks for the preemptively kind words, but I got distracted before putting the final touches on it (which was an exercise in how to replicate blue tarping).

Administrative note - that's a pair of road wheels under the gun tube. You'll notice when a breach block has been removed or there's no hydraulic pressure left, tubes will droop like an octogenarian's gonads.
I wanted it to look like a Gopnik (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gopnik) hangout, but ... just don't have to inspiration to make a bunch of crushed beer cans from sprue bits. Also, the side skirt graffiti is too clean.
MODERATOR - is there an easy way to blend the prequel thread into this one?

that look great. Really nice and the final "resting" state is a great idea

Now it looks done! :D
Great job, Story! Would love to see it in a diorama! 8)
