I think the workbench photo you used GTX is not one from a member of this forum, looks way to clean. Not enough unbuilt, started projects.😜

certainly not Greg's work bench either as all of the kits are in the "wrong scale" :)

Great insight. :)   Could not have said it better.
Like to clear off even one of bench's three unfinished kitbashes.

Oh crap this could be bad. I've got a bunch of projects gathering dust, the Jetty-Ju, the tri-motor Betty VIP transport, the Avro Luton, the von Braun inspired airliner...

I should do this by the numbers, oldest first. I've got enough half-starts to be comfortably set for the CYWB GB in 2017, 2018, 2019 and beyond.

Thatz a nice work bench.  Can even see surface material, its color and such.
In round numbers, mine is 90% cluttered/covered.  Doing cleaning now (entire room).  Maybe can participate in this GB.

Hopefully, I'll get something in for this one but this year has been a bit of a washout on the modelling front.  So many crappy things have happened this year that, were I not such an optimist, I would suspect that some minor (or major) deity has it in for me!  :(

Looks like a "staged picture" done by non model builders.  Idealistic book-magazine kinda picture.
Correct type items here-n-there,,,,,,,  but looking oh so staged.
Even after multi-mandays of clean up.  My bench-room won't come out looking like that.

I actually bought a roll top desk to use for modelling a couple of years back to protect WIPs from toddlers, pets and careless spouse, etc.  The issue is the sides mean it fills up with crap very quick meaning I need another bench next to it to more stuff to or work on.  Worse yet is now the spare room it is in has a double bed instead of the single (I suggested a sofa bed or Futon but was interstate when the bed was bought), as well as a corner computer desk, and I can't get to either desk without pulling the bed out then pushing it up against the built-in robe doors. :(

Why a double bed?  Well a queen, let alone a king, wouldn't fit and my step daughter needs it apparently, for when she visits for a week, once or twice a year. :S

I feel your pain. We have to have a "guest bedroom" for when one of my kids stays overnight. Like you said, once or twice a year. And my youngest is in college so she is gone most of the time except when she comes home for a weekend. And she still has her room. I suggested a combo library, office, lab and model room. I got the eyeroll. ::)

I'd post a picture of my work bench, but I think it would blanch even the hardiest of the BTS crowd. Right now I have about a hand's worth of clear real estate. Maybe less.

Really honestly "hand's worth of clear real estate" is to small.
Last couple kitbashing cycles started at ~70% clear bench.  Ending at 8.5"x11" printer paper page as working area.  Does the job cept retaining two pages of work surface would be way better.

After Jons photo I had another look at my garage.  The previous owner built 80% of one half of the double garage into a closed off, air-conditioned hobby room that has been full of "Stuff" ever since we moved in almost three years ago.  "Stufff" currently includes yet to be unpacked moving boxes, garden tools, camping gear, kids bikes and part of my stash and has previously stored my motorbike prior to it relocating to my sisters house to avoid temptation following my spinal surgery.

Anyway the long term plan has always been to pull it down and use it for the car, but as we haven't done this already and I don't know when, if ever, so today I gingerly broached the suggestion with SWMBO that we could actually clear out some junk and use it as a hobby room for modelling, Lego and puzzles.

Volkodav - sure sounds good, hope it works out for you.

Making progress here.  Estimate 1/3 of 70s green shag carpet is now visible.  Encountered many wayward decals during dig down to carpet level.

Noticed a relativity phenomenon: When clutter is maximum and deep with only about 5% of green shag carpet visible, progress is super slow because there is no maneuvering room.  One must deal with every little item encountered (wheel, prop, decal, canopy, stand, receipt, etc) though you are unable to deposit it in proper location across room because you can't get there due to depth of styrene related clutter.  Most goes to designated temporary holding boxes in hallway, some to trash can.  Once a carpethead is established progress goes a bit quicker.  There comes point at about 25% carpethead when you have decent maneuvering room and dealing with each item is relatively easier/quicker than at first.  With this milestone reached relativity of difficulty (time involved) dealing with each item diminishes.

Finsrin, this is what I call an "Okinawa Field Day" from my time in the Green Machine...when my shed or garage becomes overrun with clutter everything comes out - down to the bare walls and floor.  Then I start putting things back into the area - shelves followed by bins and boxes to go on the shelves.  As I find things that are no longer needed, useful or wanted they go into the trash or are bagged for the thrift store donation.  End result is a clean and organized space, which lasts approximately a nano-second before the clutter counter-attacks.

Yep, my half of the garage is my inside shop/art/hobby area (we have a covered outside area I use during the
warm months for carpentry, metalwork etc.), the other half is for the wife's car. Mine lives outside on the driveway.
Works fairly well when it's organized.  :-X

Continuing to dig, clear, sort, and store items to hopefully be ready for GB.
One thing done right years ago when setting room was to designate bins for parts.   See attached picture of storage bins.
Actually have places to put most of parts being found.  Cleared path to bins, now can use them during clean up.
Doing this may work for you.

Here's my current disaster area:

It's usually clear up to the paint area. As soon as I finish a couple of the existing projects, it'll get cleaned up and ready to walk my work area down down to the edge again with my next project.

The Glencoe/Strombecker space station was built, sanded (and sanded...) and polished some 15 years ago. I just added the thin styrene rod (strings looked awful). Hopefully it won't take 15 years to finish it, although I dinged a couple of the rods.

The Earth vs. The Flying Saucers is finished, the Curran should be finished this week.

My current work bench.  I clean it at the start of each project. Just completed Meng's BMPT and going to start Meng's D9R bulldozer. The wife has given her blessings for me to build a real work bench after Chistmas.
