Title: Ironclad - HMVS Orthrus - Finished
Post by: Buzzbomb on October 23, 2021, 02:39:47 PM
Apparently I have the attention span of a 3 year old.
Whilst the Vosper is on the side, waiting for me to get a base underway. Or puts some paint on. Or even just decide about the number of torpedo tubes, I got the Bronco 1/350 Chen Yuen out again. I heard a calling and what do you know, a session and a bit later, we have this.

Because it is illegal to build things stock on this forum  ;) I had to have a bit of a tinker as I thought the small turrets bow and stern looked a bit naff.
Moved them to the beams and that then got me thinking about another add on, which is on the 3d printer now. If it works out.. it could be the next step.

Still half keen to make it a ship of the Colony of Victoria, who pre Federation had the largest Naval force of all the Colonies of Australia.
Some of the blame here goes on Doc Yo for doing such an inspirational build in his thread.
Oh Doc Yo.. this kit has those nifty little torpedo boats you are building in your ironclad. I have not put the etch rails on yet until I paint.

This era of naval architecture is so interesting.  Glad to see kits of it being released.  You are off to a swell start

There is so much I can relate to in this post, from the subject matter to the realization I don't quite know what to do next... ;)

This is going to be a neat build - and the torpedo boat is a great bonus. Go to, colleague!

I have the kit partly converted to a flying dreadnought “airship”.

Interesting rearrangement, you’ve put your beam turrets directly above
the engine-space. Luckily they’re horizontal three-cylinder engines with
a relatively low profile.
 ;)

I like the location of the smaller turrets. Maybe when you and Dr. Yo finish your builds you can have a virtual campaign against a common foe!

Nobody, merely a throw away line to justify to myself the need to move stuff for no apparent reason. Sorry about that :-[

thanks Jon, good to know.  I really have done zero research on this ship, which in all probability is unlikely to change.

My 3d printer experiment is looking promising, let say that it may involve an Airship, but not to the extent of JCF' Flying Dreadnought concept.

The thing I find with small scale ships is that you have to paint as you go and using sub components to build the ship up.

This is not too bad, not quite as finicky as some 20th century ship kits as far as teensy, weensy parts. Still there is a bit of detail that needs to be picked out as you build over it.
This is a test fit shot, nothing, save the main superstructure is glued in yet.

If nothing else, ships of this era did have a splash of colour. The grey thing at the back is the basis of the Airship that,if I can pull it off, will be tethered to the aft part of the ship. A sort of 19th C COD type craft.

So my mind's eye sees the ship anchored and the airship tethered, dropping off a recce report or something.

Here I thought the “grey thing in the back” was a whale or something for the diorama!  ;D
This is looking really nice, carry on!

Some mighty fine work on display.  I like the tethered airship addition, too.

Hmmm.. not sure if this will work like my mind eye sees it
(https://www.modelblokez.org.au/bthpix/whatif/ships/ironclad/ironclad_3.JPG)

Airship has been worked out, sort of 1890ish era. It is still a bit heavier than I would like, so getting it fully tethered to the ship may not quite work.
I have had tethering to the mast idea penciled in and tossed out a few times about how practical that is. It is a way ahead to add some stability. The Airship is lighter than air after all and a reasonably small airship at that even in 1/350 scale
The rear overhead boat business, will have a deck on it for the Airship handling crew, boats moved to midships.
Currently working through the railing and rigging phase, where I work from the inside out, the funnel stays are, on as is the dinky bridge deck rails.

Is super    Best of luck with railing and rigging !

Heh. Now suddenly I want to see the secondary turrets capable of high angle fire...

Looks terrific!

some measure of success with Airship suspension.
Using the mast made it work better as it gave a solid point of connection. There is some brass through the mast, that goes into some tube in the nose of the Airship, that offers enough support so that a couple of fine brass rods, which will be tie lines, do the rest.

Most of the inner rigging and railing is done, bit more detail to go on then the final outside rail, base, then don't touch it ever again

That would be the What-If forum where only whiffs are allowed to be built in GB's  (don't ask how I know)

The airship and mooring looks great! I like the secondary deck to allow access to the gondola.

It is rather good, this . . .
a minor suggestion, move the 'crow's nest' thingy on the after mast down a bit, so the airship mooring crew can reach the airship's nose . . .

cheers,
Robin.

Oh, that is looking great! Any struggles rigging the airship were worth it

The whole ship is delightfully bonkers but your airship really is the icing on the cake  ;D

Almost there, the last bit of railing and rigging went on and a test fit of the Airship and attendant tie down points... or in the case of this model, the hold up points.
a minor suggestion, move the 'crow's nest' thingy on the after mast down a bit, so the airship mooring crew can reach the airship's nose . . .

That probably would have worked, bit late for this build though. The parts breakdown around those parts is a bit weird though, all butt joints.

This is a test fit to see if my engineering went from conceptual to practical. Mostly it did.

The model comes with a spiffy little steam boat, I decided to put that out as a "Plane guard" craft
(https://www.modelblokez.org.au/bthpix/whatif/ships/ironclad/ironclad_7.JPG)

Still working on the water base and perhaps more crew figures. The Ship will have anchors deployed as well.

More shots as we hit the finish

That's a beautiful scene! I like how the airship's free end is slightly raised - it gives a good sense of buoyancy. The ship and water look great, too.

This came out splendidly! The airship is a really nice touch, and the launch gives a great sense of scale to the scene. I'm going to have to try your water technique for the Revenant.

Finally finished this one off. Anchor chain and final rigging.
As it is a Steamship, smoke from the stacks is pretty much required. Added a Torpedo boat tied up alongside, but placed only, it could go.

Well, I think it looks great, BT! 8) 8)

Although I really like the torpedo boat, I think it adds an oddly uncomfortable asymmetry to the dio, so I'd suggest it either going elsewhere on the dio or, going[STOP]

Excellent! The Science Pirate Syndicate largely avoided the HMVS, even when operations expanded into the Pacific in the late 1880's. The latter's early adoption
of Air Scouts being one reason, their excellent gunnery being the other.
